First US Airdate 24 November 1991 Episode 3.10
[Exterior shot of the de la Vega hacienda as Don Alejandro waters some plants near one of the hacienda gates. He sets down his watering can then starts pruning on one of the plants. He looks up when he hears hoof beats off camera. He walks up to the closed gate with a serious expression.]
[Shot from Don Alejandro's point of view of three men on horseback riding toward the hacienda.]
[Exterior shot of the de la Vega hacienda as Don Alejandro opens the gate and walks through it.]
Don Alejandro [over his left shoulder]
Diego!
[Shot from Don Alejandro's point of view as the three men ride closer. They are all pointing rifles into the air.]
[Exterior shot of the de la Vega hacienda as Diego comes out its front door. He walks towards Don Alejandro who turns around to look at him then points toward the direction the men are coming.]
Don Alejandro
Muskets! Hurry!
[Diego runs back inside the hacienda. The men ride closer. Diego runs up to Don Alejandro carrying a musket in each hand.]
Don Alejandro
Quickly.
Men on Horseback [as they bring their horses to a halt in front of the
hacienda]
Whoa!
[All three men dismount. One man steps forward and points his rifle at Don Alejandro and Diego.]
Man
Put down your weapons.
[Diego looks worriedly over at Don Alejandro. The other two men also aim their rifles at Don Alejandro and Diego. Don Alejandro lowers his musket as Diego looks concerned.]
Don Alejandro
I only have one question. Where have you old buzzards been hiding
yourselves?
[Don Alejandro and the three men start laughing. Don Alejandro goes over to the men as Diego looks on, very confused.]
Man
Alejandro!
[He and Don Alejandro embrace.]
Don Alejandro
Hey! Hombres! Muchachos!
Men
All right! Hey!
Don Alejandro [as he embraces another of the men]
Diego. I want you to meet the three toughest hombres in the Fifth
Spanish Cavalry.
Diego [smiling now]
The Fifth. That was your old command.
Don Alejandro
Yes.
First Man
Don't tell me. [He points at Diego while looking at Don Alejandro.] Yours?
Don Alejandro [proudly]
Yes, my only son. . .Diego.
[The man walks up to Diego and shakes his hand.]
First Man
Mucho gusto. Diego, how does it feel to be the son of the finest horseman
in the whole Spanish cavalry? And the man who is going to lead us into
our final battle?
[Don Alejandro's happy expression grows serious.]
Diego [concerned again]
Battle? What battle?
First Man
Cordoba.
Don Alejandro
Cordoba? He's still alive?
First Man
Yes and he's here.
[Don Alejandro looks concerned and upset.]
*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****
[Exterior shot of the de la Vega stables as Don Alejandro's three friends march past Don Alejandro and Diego as Don Alejandro cinches the saddle on a white horse.]
Diego
Father, you military career took place nearly thirty years ago.
Don Alejandro
You were hardly out of your swaddling clothes, Diego.
Diego [as he goes over and leans against a nearby fence]
With all due respect, do you really think these men are up to such a hazardous
mission?
Don Alejandro [joining Diego by the fence]
Diego. [He points to his left.] That is Captain Carlos Frontera.
[Shot from Don Alejandro and Diego's point of view of the first man as he reaches up and grabs onto a beam of the stables.]
Don Alejandro [off camera]
Still the strongest man I've ever known.
[Carlos struggles to do a chin up. He finally does one then attempts to do another but his hands slip off the beam and he falls to the ground.]
Carlos
Ay!
[Don Alejandro looks away then points straight ahead.]
Don Alejandro
Sergeant Pablo Escobar. [Another of the men stands with his feet apart.]
You know, I've never seen him use a gun.
[Shot from Pablo's point of view of a round target hanging off the side of the stables.]
Don Alejandro [off camera]
But that's because he's never had to. [Pablo pulls a knife out of his boot
and aims it at the target.] Watch this, Diego.
[Shot from Pablo's point of view as the target goes in and out of focus.]
Don Alejandro [off camera]
(Something I couldn't catch) Pablo!
[Shot of the de la Vega stables as Pablo throws his knife. It sticks a board several feet below and to the left of the target. Don Alejandro shakes his head. Pablo looks confused. Don Alejandro points to his left again.]
Don Alejandro
Ah, Private Juan Traves. . . An eye like an eagle [The third
man, Juan, sets a green bottle on a fence.] Steadiest hand this side of the
Sierra Nevada.
[Juan turns away from the fence as Don Alejandro and Diego watch. Juan raises a pistol and fires.]
[Shot from Juan's point of view of the intact bottle still sitting on the fence.]
[Exterior shot of the de la Vega stables as Don Alejandro and Diego shake their heads.]
Diego
Hmm. . .
[Juan brings up a second pistol then aims and fires. The bottle still sits intact on the fence. Diego raises an eyebrow as Don Alejandro looks on worriedly. Juan pulls out a pistol with a longer barrel from his waistband. He aims it then fires. The bottle finally shatters. Diego holds out his hands as Don Alejandro points and laughs. Juan shakes his head and smiles.]
Don Alejandro [off camera at first]
All right, Diego. So they're a little rusty, but with some vigorous
training, you'll see.
Diego
From what you've told me, this Cordoba is a vicious killer.
Don Alejandro [angrily as Carlos, Pablo, and Juan walks up]
He's worse than that. Cordoba is a traitor. He deserted us in
the heat of battle. He turned against his own compadres.
Pablo
He cold-bloodedly shot. . .
[Juan grabs Pablo's arm and Pablo stops talking. The three men all look at each other.]
Diego [to Carlos]
You're certain of his location?
Carlos
We tracked him seven months. . .. Guernavarca, Taxco, Juarez, San
Diego, and now Los Angeles.
Pablo
And it is also fate that you are here, Don Alejandro.
Don Alejandro
It is a fate I welcome. [Diego looks concerned as Don Alejandro pats his
horse's back.] Venga, chica. (Translation: Come, girl.)
[He leads the horse out of the stables. Then he is riding around in a field.]
Carlos [off camera as Don Alejandro rides]
In his day, there wasn't a lancer in the whole army that could outride the
commander.
[Don Alejandro weaves his horse back and forth across the field.]
[Exterior night shot of the plaza as crickets chirp.]
[Exterior night shot of the tavern as Victoria carries a tray across the porch past the front doors. Diego steps out of the tavern just as she passes by. He goes over to his right where Don Alejandro and his three friends are sitting at a table.]
Don Alejandro
All right, so you say the place where Cordoba is hiding, Canyon de las Piedras
(Translation: Canyon of the Rocks), it's a natural fortress? [The other three
men nod.] But then we'll have to draw them out. We'll create a diversion.
Diego [a bit angrily]
You not serious about this?
Don Alejandro [giving Diego the evil eye as he looks up at him]
We've never been more serious.
Carlos [to Diego]
You think we're too old? [He hold up his hand and puts his elbow down on
the table.] Come.
[Diego shakes his head. Juan stands up and Diego sits in his place opposite Carlos. Victoria comes up and stands behind Don Alejandro. Diego grasps Carlos's hand. Pablo hold his hand above the table.]
Pablo
Ready. . .
[He slams his hand on the table. Diego and Carlos start arm wrestling. Diego nearly takes down Carlos's hand but then Carlos slowly brings his hand back up. Carlos then brings Diego's hand down to the table.]
Diego
Oh. . .
[Don Alejandro, Pablo, and Juan all laugh and cheer.]
Carlos
We are like good wine. . .we improve with age.
Pablo
Don't worry, young de la Vega. Cordoba will be ours.
Don Alejandro
He's right, Diego.
[Don Alejandro, Carlos, and Pablo all stand up.]
Carlos or Pablo or maybe both?
Hasta luego, Don Diego.
[The older men all walk away. Victoria leans closer to Diego, holding a pitcher.]
Victoria
I saw that.
Diego [looking up at her]
What?
Victoria
You let him win, didn't you?
Diego [unhappily]
Yes. It was a mistake.
[Don Alejandro and his friends stand near their horses.]
Don Alejandro
We ride tomorrow at dawn.
One of the Men
Hasta luego.
Victoria [to Diego]
It seems your father and his friends enjoy talking about the good old days.
Diego
The problem is. . . they intend to do more than just talk about them.
[He looks over his left shoulder as Don Alejandro and his friends ride away.]
[Exterior wide night shot of the de la Vega hacienda.]
[Closeup shot of a pistol being cleaned. The camera pulls back to show Don Alejandro sitting in a chair inside the hacienda. He lifts up the pistol and looks into its chambers. He closes the chambers then holds it in his hands as Diego walks into the room.]
Diego [sighing as he sees the pistol]
I don't understand. You're an intelligent man. Surely, you must
realize you're not the soldier you were thirty years ago.
[Don Alejandro, with a grim expression, sets down the pistol on a table then stands up. He takes a key from his waistband then goes over to a cabinet and unlocks a door on it. He takes out a piece of paper. He then turns and hand it to Diego.]
Diego [looking at a portrait of a young man]
Who's this?
Don Alejandro
Alfonso de la Vega.
Diego
My uncle?
Don Alejandro
Yes, Diego.
Diego
Didn't he die at the Battle of Guernavarca?
Don Alejandro
He was murdered by one of his own men.
Diego
Cordoba.
Don Alejandro
Yes. When he betrayed the platoon, he shot Alfonso in the back.
He was my brother, Diego. [He picks up two pistols from the table.] Tomorrow,
I will finally give him justice.
[Exterior shot of the countryside as the sun rises over the horizon and a rooster crows.]
[Exterior shot of the pueblo gate as Don Alejandro and his three friends ride underneath it and into the plaza as a rooster still crows.]
[Exterior shot of the cuartel gate as Mendoza steps out of it and into the plaza. He yawns as he rubs his eyes. He watches as Don Alejandro and his friends ride toward the cuartel.]
Mendoza
Buenos dias, Don Alejandro. Nice day for a quail hunt, huh?
Don Alejandro [as he rides past Mendoza]
Yes indeed!
Carlos?
A quail by the name of Cordoba.
The Other Men
Muchachos! Ay!
Mendoza [turning around with a puzzled expression on his face]
Cordoba?
[He then mouths the word ‘oh' then walks away.]
[Closeup shot of several wanted posters. Zorro's is to the right of a poster for Cordoba, which reads, ‘Wanted, Cordoba, Dead or Alive, Reward 2,000 Pesos'. It is ripped down by Mendoza.]
[Exterior shot of the cuartel yard where Mendoza looks at Cordoba's poster in front of a board where the other posters hang.]
Mendoza
Cordoba, still alive. [He chuckles and steps forward.] Private, saddle my
horse. [A lancers comes up to Mendoza.] And choose two thousand pesos. . .
I mean two men. We're going after Cordoba.
Lancer [as he salutes]
Si, Sergeant.
[He then walks off to his left.]
Zorro [off camera at first]
Yes, Felipe, I'm very worried. . .
[Interior shot of the secret cave where Zorro stands next to Toronado. Felipe holds Toronado's reins as he faces Zorro.]
Zorro
. . .about my father and his friends. [He swings up onto Toronado's back.]
Cordoba has already killed one member of my family. I think that's quite
enough.
[He turns Toronado around then ducks down as he rides away. Felipe watches him leave. Toronado's front right hoof hits a wooden plank that activates the pulley system in motion.]
[Exterior shot of the cave's hidden entrance as it opens and Zorro and Toronado ride through it.]
[Exterior shot of the countryside as Zorro and Toronado ride across a field of purple flowers.]
[Exterior shot of a creek as Zorro and Toronado ride through it.]
[Exterior shot of the countryside as Don Alejandro and his three friends ride down a hillside. In the distance, a man with a rifle crouches down as he walks across the top of a ridge. Don Alejandro and his friends bring their horses to a halt halfway down the hill.]
Carlos
This is it. . .the Canyon de la Piedras.
Don Alejandro
Well, if Cordoba runs true to form, he'll have surrounded himself with hired
guns.
Carlos
We're going to need eyes in the back of our heads.
Don Alejandro
Um-hmm. Keep your wits about you, señores. We've got
to take him by surprise.
[He and his friends then continue riding down the hillside. The man with the rifle sneaks around the side of a large rock. He crouches down.]
[Closeup shot of the man with the rifle as he raises his rifle and takes aim, steadying himself against the rock.]
*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****
[Closeup shot of the man with the rifle as he fires.]
[Exterior shot of the countryside as Don Alejandro's horse is startled by the gunshot]
Don Alejandro
Get out of here, muchachos! Dismount!
Carlos
Pablo, with me.
[Don Alejandro dismounts his horse.]
Don Alejandro
Left flank, Carlos. Take your muskets.
[Don Alejandro goes over to his right and crouches down behind a bush beside Juan. The man fires at them again then ducks down.]
[Exterior shot of the countryside as Mendoza and three lancers ride their horses. A gunshot is heard off camera.]
Mendoza
Whoa, whoa, whoa! [He and the lancers bring their horses to a halt.] Men,
I think this would be a good time to stop and rest the horses. [He dismounts.]
We cannot lead a charge on tired mounts. Dismount!
[The three lancers dismount their horses. Two more gunshots are heard off camera.]
[Exterior shot of the countryside as Zorro rides Toronado across the top of a ridge.]
[Exterior shot of the countryside as Don Alejandro and his friends exchange shots with the man with the rifle.]
Don Alejandro
Do you see him?
Juan
There he is. Up by the rock.
[Carlos and Pablo are crouching behind a nearby bush.]
Carlos
Someone has to go up there.
Pablo [pushing back his hat]
I'll do it.
Don Alejandro [looking over at them as another gunshot rings out]
No! Cover me! That's an order!
[He hands his rifle to Juan and pulls out a pistol from his waistband. He stands up and goes behind Juan then disappears.]
Carlos?
Be careful, Don Alejandro.
[Juan raises his rifle and aims. Pablo fires his rifle then Juan fires. Don Alejandro walks cautiously through rocks and trees. Zorro jumps over a rock then walks up to the edge of a cliff. He sees the gunman on the opposite cliff then looks to his right. He sees Don Alejandro walking below toward the gunman. Zorro brings up a small crossbow. The gunman stands up and takes aim at Don Alejandro. Zorro aims his crossbow then shoots an arrow.]
[Closeup shot of the gunman as the arrow hits his right hand. He drops his rifle then shakes his hand.]
Gunman
Ow!
[Closeup shot of Zorro smiling before turning away.]
[Exterior shot of the cliff as the gunman starts to climb upward.]
Carlos [off camera]
There he goes. There, up the rocks!
[Exterior shot of the countryside as Carlos and Pablo crouch behind their bush. Pablo fires his rifle. Nearby, Juan is firing a pistol. Don Alejandro runs up behind a rock.]
[Exterior shot of a campsite where three men stand around, one tending a pot hanging over a fire. Another of them, an older man (obviously Cordoba) drinks from a cup. The gunman runs into the camp.]
Cordoba
Gomez.
Gomez [pointing to his left]
Four men with guns!
[Exterior shot of the cliff as Don Alejandro comes up to a rifle leaning up against a rock. He stops and looks around.]
[Exterior shot of the countryside where Carlos, Pablo, and Juan still crouch behind bushes.]
Don Alejandro [off camera]
This way, muchachos!
[Pablo turns around and looks at Carlos. Juan stands up.]
Carlos [off camera]
Let's go, Pablo, Juan.
[Exterior shot of the countryside where Mendoza paces while the three lancers sit around on rocks.]
Mendoza
What's keeping them so long? Madre de Dios! You could starve
to death up here waiting.
Lancers
Yeah. You sure could. Yeah.
[Exterior shot of Cordoba's campsite.]
Cordoba [pointing to his left at two of his men]
You. You. [He points to his right.] Over there. Move!
[The two men run toward the rocks where Don Alejandro and his friends are waiting. Don Alejandro is holding a sword as he looks down at the campsite.]
Voices [off camera]
Gomez, over there. This way. Watch the rocks along the ridge.
Don Alejandro [angrily at first as he turns to look at his friends]
Cordoba. . . [Carlos takes off his hat. Don Alejandro's tone changes from
anger to amazement.] He's aged.
Carlos [whispering]
What did you expect? Juan, can you hit him from here?
[Juan stands up to look over the rock.]
Voice [off camera]
Señor Cordoba!
[Juan aims his rifle.]
Don Alejandro [whispering]
Juan, what's the problem?
[Juan sits back down next to Carlos, shaking his head.]
Carlos [whispering]
We need to get closer. It seems time stands still for none of us.
Don Alejandro
You're not losing your confidence now, are you?
Carlos
No! No, Don Alejandro. We're still good. We're just not
as good as we used to be.
Pablo
Neither is Cordoba.
Don Alejandro
Well said, Pablo, well said. I promise you, señores, once the
battle is joined, you old warriors will not fail me. You'll rise to
the occasion as you have in the past. As we all have. [He pats Pablo's
arm.] Now then, here's the plan. . .
[The camera pans upward to the top of the rock where Zorro's head is peeking over the rock.]
Don Alejandro [off camera]
First we take care of the guards. . . Carlos?
Carlos [off camera]
Yes.
Don Alejandro [off camera]
Juan, Pablo . . .
[Exterior shot of the cliff where Don Alejandro rises up from behind the rock as do Carlos, Pablo, and Juan.]
[Exterior shot of Cordoba's camp as the two men come back.]
One of the Men
Do you think Cordoba.. . .?
Carlos [off camera]
There's only four of them.
[Don Alejandro and the others chuckle off camera.]
Cordoba's Men [as the two men meet up with the other two guards]
Come on. We'll search the area. Adios.
Don Alejandro [off camera as one of the guards stands and looks around
with another sits on a crate nearby]
Pablo, it's up to you on this one. Aim well, amigo.
Pablo
I don't know if I can do it. I'm not as good as I used to be.
What if I miss? They'll sound the alarm.
Don Alejandro [authoritatively]
Take the guard out, Sergeant. That's an order!
[Pablo nods then stands up. He holds a knife by its blade in his right hand. Zorro peers out from a bush, holding a rock. The guard sitting on the crate looks around. Pablo throws his knife. At the same time, Zorro throws his rock. Pablo's knife hits another crate beside the guard. Zorro's rock hit the guard's hat.]
Guard [as he falls forward]
Oof!
Don Alejandro [turning to look at Pablo]
You got him! You got him!
[The other guard turns around.]
Pablo [very surprised]
I did?
Don Alejandro [nodding]
Yes.
Pablo
In that case. . .
[He starts to stand up again. The second guard goes to where the injured guard is lying on the ground.]
Second Guard
Martinez. . . Martinez?
[He looks up. Pablo throws another knife. Zorro throws another rock. The rock hits the second guard in the face. (Not sure where the knife went.)]
Don Alejandro [pumping his fist in the air]
Good! Pablo, you and Juan, you cut the other two men off. Carlos,
you and I will go up to the camp. Move!
[Don Alejandro goes to his right, followed by Carlos. Pablo and Juan go to the left. Pablo and Juan come out from behind some trees as Zorro watches before going to his left. Pablo and Juan walk slowly behind some rocks. Zorro crouches down behind a rock at the top of the cliff. The camera pans down to where two of Cordoba's men are walking.]
One of the Men
Cordoba completely took him apart.
Other Man
I know, I know. That guy. . .
[Zorro climbs down the cliff, rappelling down his whip. He reaches the bottom of the cliff then turns around. Cordoba's men continue to talk. Zorro takes a step forward and steps on a twig which snaps loudly.]
Cordoba's Men [both spinning around]
Hey! Hey! What was that?
[Zorro cracks his whip and it wraps around the men's throats.]
Cordoba's Men [grabbing at the whip]
Aah! Aah!
[Pablo and Juan crouch down behind a rock, unaware of what is going on. Zorro yanks on his whip and Cordoba's men fall face down on a rock.]
Cordoba's Men
Ooh! Aah! Uh!
[They hit their heads on the rock and pass out. Pablo and Juan creep out from behind their rock as Zorro uses his whip to climb back up the cliff.]
[Exterior shot of Cordoba's camp as Cordoba looks over his shoulder at a man who is standing behind him.]
Cordoba
Shoot anything that moves.
Don Alejandro [off camera at first]
I'd love to, Cordoba.
[Cordoba turns around as Don Alejandro and Carlos walk into the camp. Don Alejandro is brandishing his sword as Carlos holds a pistol.]
Cordoba [chuckling]
De la Vega? Is it you?
[Don Alejandro salutes with his sword, his expression grim.]
Cordoba
And, uh. . . Frontera! [Carlos nods as Cordoba laughs.] Incredible.
Don Alejandro [through clenched teeth]
My sentiments exactly. There are four of us here. Four witnesses
to your treachery. At last, [He points his sword at Cordoba.] you'll
hang.
Carlos
I say shoot him here and now.
Don Alejandro
No, Carlos. I want justice for him in a court of law.
Cordoba [smiling insincerely]
Amigos, can't we talk this over?
[He brings up a pistol and fires. The bullet hits Carlos in the right arm.]
Don Alejandro [tossing his sword aside and pulling a pistol from his waistband,
aiming it at Cordoba]
No! Carlos, are you all right?
Carlos [clutching his right arm]
I'm all right.
[Don Alejandro lowers his pistol then steps forward. He raises his pistol, aiming it at Cordoba.]
Cordoba
Go ahead. Shoot me! Finish it. . .if you have the nerve.
[Don Alejandro grits his teeth angrily as he points the pistol at Cordoba.]
Don Alejandro
I can't. I'm not like you, Cordoba. I'm not that kind of man.
[Cordoba lets out his breath then starts laughing.]
Cordoba
I didn't think so.
[He throws his pistol at Don Alejandro, hitting Don Alejandro in the chest.]
Don Alejandro [as he is knock backward]
Oh!
[Cordoba then throws himself at Don Alejandro, driving Don Alejandro backward. They knock over the pot that was hanging over the fire as they fall down to the ground. They roll around on the ground until Cordoba pins Don Alejandro to the ground. Cordoba starts choking Don Alejandro, trying to press down on his windpipe. Don Alejandro throws him off then they both slowly get back on their feet.]
Carlos [off camera]
Get him, Don Alejandro!
[Cordoba takes a swing at Don Alejandro but misses as Don Alejandro ducks. Don Alejandro punches Cordoba in the face. Cordoba staggers around for a moment then runs at Don Alejandro and grabs him. Cordoba twists Don Alejandro's arm up behind his back with his left hand, then holds his right forearm across Don Alejandro's throat. Don Alejandro struggles to free himself. Cordoba pushes Don Alejandro into a pile of sacks and crates. Zorro watches the first from the top of the ridge. Don Alejandro elbows Cordoba in the ribs then punches him in the face.]
Carlos [off camera]
Get him, amigo!
[Cordoba staggers backward. Don Alejandro goes after him.]
Carlos [off camera]
Finish him!
[Don Alejandro punches Cordoba in the face again. Cordoba falls on his back on the ground, breathing hard and bleeding from his nose. Don Alejandro stands above him, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.]
Cordoba
This is crazy. We're fighting about. . .something that happened. .
.thirty years ago.
Don Alejandro
Yes, and justice has a long memory, Cordoba. And so do I.
*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****
[Exterior shot of Cordoba's camp as Don Alejandro stands over Cordoba who is still on the ground. Carlos watches, still holding his right arm.]
Don Alejandro [to Carlos]
Still strong as an ox, you old buzzard.
[He chuckles as Carlos walks toward him. Pablo, Juan, Mendoza, and the three lancers walk into the camp on Don Alejandro's right.]
Carlos
And you're still tough, Don Alejandro.
Mendoza [seeing Cordoba on the ground]
Cordoba!
[Cordoba struggles to his feet.]
Don Alejandro
He's all your, Sergeant Mendoza.
Mendoza
I know, Don Alejandro. That is why I'm here. To bring back this
scoundrel.
Don Alejandro
I see. Well, you did a very nice job then. Only don't expect
to collect the bounty on this man's head.
Mendoza
Why not?
Don Alejandro
It was donated to the veterans' fund. [He raises his sword as Mendoza looks
at him with an open mouth.] Did you have something to say?
Mendoza
Er. . .
[He turns and points to a lancer then at Cordoba.]
Lancer [grabbing Cordoba's hands]
Okay, let's go.
[The lancer leads Cordoba away. Mendoza follows. Don Alejandro, Carlos, Pablo, and Juan gather around each other.]
Pablo
Well, we proved to the nonbelievers we are a good as we ever were.
Don Alejandro
Always.
Carlos
Alejandro, you bring back my youth.
Pablo
And there's a long trip.
[The camera pans away from them to the top of the ridge behind them where Zorro stands, looking down on them, his cape fluttering in the wind.]
[Exterior shot of the de la Vega hacienda.]
[Exterior shot of the de la Vega hacienda courtyard where a party is going on. Victoria talks to a man in a gray suit then turns and walks away. Don Alejandro comes through a door and out into the courtyard. He shakes the hand of the man in the gray suit.]
Man
Don Alejandro.
Don Alejandro [holding a glass in his hand]
Ah, Don Paco. Gracias, gracias.
[He walks off to his left.]
Don Alejandro
You were right, Diego. [Diego walks up next to him.] This farewell party,
it was a great idea. Wonderful food from Victoria. I am very happy,
son.
Diego [also holding a glass]
I apologize for ever doubting you.
Don Alejandro
Now that's not necessary, son. After all, all these years of living
with my brother's death, I had to do something.
Diego
I'm very proud of you.
[They walk past Mendoza, who is talking to a male guest.]
Mendoza [as Victoria eavesdrops]
. . .so, after I captured Cordoba, I said to myself, it is only fitting
the bounty money go to the veterans' fund, huh?
[He puts his arm around the man and they laugh as they walk away. Victoria goes over to where Don Alejandro and Diego are standing, carrying a pitcher of orange juice.]
Victoria
Don Alejandro, how can you let Mendoza take all the credit?
Don Alejandro [as they watched as Mendoza talks to more guests]
Now, now, now, Victoria. The reward is in the deed. What matters
is that Cordoba will finally face justice.
Victoria [nodding]
I agree.
[She turns and walks away. Don Alejandro looks over his shoulder.]
Don Alejandro
Hey, muchachos!
[He and Diego turn and walk over to where Carlos, Juan, and Pablo are sitting in a corner of the courtyard. Carlos's right arm is in a sling.]
Carlos
We were just saying, Don Alejandro, it was amazing how you managed to overpower,
not only Cordoba, but also his guards.
Don Alejandro [shaking his head]
Actually I don't remember ever fighting his guards.
Pablo
By the way, who took care of Cordoba's men further down the canyon?
Don Alejandro [pointing at Juan]
Juan?
[Juan shakes his head.]
Diego [a bit nervously]
Well, I'm sure that in the excitement and the confusion, you all didn't
even know your own strength.]
[The men all look at each other and nod.]
Pablo
Ah, that would explain it.
Don Alejandro, Carlos, and Juan
Ah!
[The four friends all lift their glasses then clink them together.]
Don Alejandro, Carlos, Pablo, and Juan
Salud!
[They all take a drink from their glasses. Diego shakes his head then smiles.]
