"A New Beginning"

Written by Robert L McCullough

First US Airdate 13 October 1991   Episode 3.7

[Closeup exterior shot of Big Jim Jarrett and Pepe hugging.]

Pepe [voiceover]
It was a new beginning for Big Jim and me. . .

[Exterior shot of a farmhouse.]

Pepe [voiceover]
We had a new home in pueblo de Los Angeles.

[Exterior shot of a farmyard as Felipe leads a donkey carrying Pepe on its back.]

Pepe [voiceover]
And now with the help of the de la Vegas. . .

[Exterior shot of a recently plowed field as Big Jim bends over and picks up a rock then tosses it aside as Diego walks alongside the edge of the field.]

Pepe [voiceover]
Big Jim Jarrett, the pirate. . .

[Exterior shot of a cemetery surrounded by a white picket fence.]

Pepe [voiceover]
Started to farm.

[Several people, including Diego, Victoria, and Don Alejandro walk past the cemetery.]

[Closeup shot of a headstone which reads ‘RIP Bonfacia Jalisco 1787-1814'.  Big Jim bend down and puts  a bouquet of flowers in front of the headstone.]

Pepe [voiceover]
And for the first time in my life, I was with my papa.

[The camera pulls back as Big Jim kneels in front of the headstone as Pepe stands to his right.]

Big Jim
She was a proud woman, Pepe.  Too proud to keep my name when I didn't come back.

Pepe
But why didn't you?

Big Jim [as Diego, Don Alejandro, and Victoria stand behind him]
Becalmed off Cuba. . .  Run aground by storms off Bequia (an island in the northern Grenadines in the Caribbean). . .  Chased by Spanish warships down to the Cape.

[He picks up Pepe then turns around.]

Victoria
You were gone a long time, weren't you?

Big Jim
Counting being marooned off the coast of Chile. . .  Five years. [He turns and looks at the headstone.] Too much to ask of anyone.

Don Alejandro
You never wrote?

Big Jim
I can't read let alone write.

Don Alejandro
She lived as a widow then.

Diego
For all she knew, you were dead.

Big Jim [looking at Pepe]
When she told you your father was killed by a pirate, that was just about true.  My life as a pirate nearly killed me many a time.

Don Alejandro
That's not a life for a boy, Captain Jarrett.

Big Jim
That's why I'm dropping anchor here in Los Angeles.  I'm going to get me a real trade. [He looks at Pepe.]  And you're going to get the schooling I never had.

Diego
The Alcalde's sanctuary could be rescinded at any time.

Big Jim
The Alcalde seems to be a man who knows what he wants.

Don Alejandro
Do you honestly believe he's going to honor his promise of clemency to you?

Big Jim
Aye.  As long as he thinks I'll lead him to the treasure of Port-au-Prince.

Don Alejandro
Oh, yeah. . .  That would be a feather in his cap for certain people in Madrid.

Diego
But once he has the treasure, where does that leave you?

Big Jim
That's the rub.  It's my job to keep him chasing that carrot.

[Diego and Don Alejandro smile as they look at each other.]

[Exterior shot of the countryside as de Soto, Mendoza, and Sepulveda sit on horseback, staring forward.]

[Exterior wide shot of the cemetery as Big Jim, Pepe, Victoria, Diego, and Don Alejandro walk toward a horse hitched to a wagon.]

Pepe
Papa, can I go with. . .

Mendoza [off camera]
Granting sanctuary from the arrest warrant gave Pepe his father back.

[Exterior shot of the countryside where de Soto, Mendoza, and Sepulveda sit on horseback.]

de Soto
Perhaps I acted with undue precipitation.

Mendoza
Really? [He looks upward.] You think it's going to rain?

[Sepulveda looks upward too as de Soto rolls his eyes.]

de Soto
If Jarrett killed a man in Florida, he should be made to pay for his crime.

Mendoza
But he says he's innocent.

de Soto
Hmm. . .  Does he?

Mendoza
Si, Alcalde.  You said you would not arrest him on that warrant.

de Soto
I assure you, Sergeant, I won't have to.

Mendoza
Mi Alcalde, I don't understand.

de Soto [sarcastically]
How unusual. [He looks over his shoulder at Sepulveda.] Corporal Sepulveda. . .  I've been thinking about promotions.  Perhaps we should have a little talk.

[He rides his horse forward.]

Sepulveda [following after de Soto]
Si, Alcalde.

[Mendoza stares at them incredulously.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Exterior shot of Big Jim's farm as he and Diego walk on opposite sides of a low twine fence.  Felipe and Don Alejandro help Pepe on the back of a donkey.]

Diego [swinging a stick in his right hand and holding a small white sack in his left]
You'll feel like you're a part of this land.

Big Jim [carrying a hoe]
Are you sure you trust me with this place?  The little rent I pay. . .will hardly cover the damage I might do.

[Felipe and Don Alejandro lead the donkey carrying Pepe up next to where Diego and Big Jim are standing.]

Diego
Don't worry, Jim.  You'll raise some fine corn.

[He hands Big Jim the white sack.  Don Alejandro pats the donkey on the rump then stops to stand next to Diego.]

Don Alejandro
Hey, hey, Pepe.

[Pepe turns and waves as Felipe lead him away on the donkey.]

Pepe
Bye!

Don Alejandro
Those two are really getting along, huh?

Big Jim
Aye.  It seems Pepe's found himself a big brother of sorts.

[Diego and Don Alejandro look at each other then smile and nod.]

[Exterior shot of the countryside as Felipe lead Pepe and the donkey through some bushes.]

Pepe
So, if I press with my right, the donkey turns right?

[Felipe nods.]

Pepe
But how does he know?

[Felipe stops then touches the donkey's head with his right hand, then touches his own forehead with the same hand.  He then points his hand in the air.  Felipe then starts leading Pepe and the donkey again.]

Pepe
Let's see if he'll turn left.

[Felipe turns to face forward.  Suddenly a black cape flutters in front of them and fills the screen.]

Pepe [off camera]
Aah!

[Felipe falls face down onto the ground.]

Pepe
Zorro!

[Zorro grabs Pepe off the back of the donkey then puts Pepe over his shoulder.]

Pepe
Let me go!  Let me go, Zorro!

[Zorro runs off into the bushes, leaving Felipe unconscious on the ground.]

[Exterior wide night shot of the de la Vega hacienda.]

Diego [off camera]
What happened?

Big Jim [off camera]
When Pepe wasn't home by dark. . .

[Interior shot of the de la Vega hacienda as Big Jim carries Felipe over to a settee and sets him down on it.  Diego and Don Alejandro follow him.]

Big Jim
I went out looking for him.  I found Felipe, out cold.

[Diego puts his hand on Felipe's forehead.  Big Jim takes out a folded piece of paper of his waistband.]

Big Jim
With this pinned to his chest.  I can't read it.

[He hands the paper to Diego, who unfolds it.]

Diego [reading the note]
‘Give yourself up to the Alcalde or you'll never see your son again.  That bounty on your head is mine!' [He looks over at Don Alejandro.] It's signed ‘Zorro'.

Don Alejandro
Zorro?  No, he'd never do such a thing.

Diego [obviously disturbed]
No, he wouldn't

[He hands the note back to Big Jim then kneels down beside Felipe.]

Big Jim
Many a man has changed course for money.

Don Alejandro [adamantly]
No, sir.  Not Zorro.

Big Jim
No?  It was Zorro who first helped the soldiers to arrest me.  I say the blackguard planned the whole thing.  Made it possible for me to live here, then turned on me like a hungry shark.

[Diego listens with a concerned expression as he pats a white cloth on Felipe's forehead.]

Big Jim
Aye.  He's nothing more than a pirate on horseback!

Diego [looking up at Don Alejandro then at Big Jim]
There must be some other explanation.

[Big Jim starts to walk away but Don Alejandro grabs his left arm.]

Don Alejandro
Where are you going?

Big Jim
What choice do I have?  Zorro fights like ten men.  I'd go after him myself if I knew the area better but I don't.  And every minute I wait, my son is in more danger.  I must turn myself over to the Alcalde.

[Don Alejandro puts his left hand on Big Jim's right shoulder then Big Jim turns and walks away.  Diego looks worried as the front door slams off camera.]

[Interior shot of de Soto's office as de Soto sits in his chair behind his desk.]

de Soto
But, Captain Jarrett, I granted you clemency from that arrest warrant hanging over you.

Big Jim [standing in front of de Soto's desk with Mendoza on his right and another lancers on his left]
And a man of your word, you are, sir.  But I'm asking you to arrest me on the terms of that warrant.

de Soto [acting confused]
A change of heart?  You want to stand trial on that murder charge?

Big Jim
I'll do whatever I must to keep my son out of harm's way.

de Soto
I'm afraid I just don't understand, Captain.

[Big Jim takes the note out of his waistband and puts it on de Soto's desk.  De Soto picks it up and reads it.]

de Soto [acting shocked]
Ohh. . .  Are there no depths to which Zorro will not sink? [He looks up at Big Jim.] You're certain about this?

Big Jim
The sooner you get me down to Florida to trial, the sooner Pepe will be safe.

de Soto [sighing]
Very well, then.  My order of clemency is hereby rescinded and you are under arrest.

Mendoza
Mi, Alcalde, you and I both know that letter is. . .

de Soto [shaking the letter at Mendoza]
. . .is only a reminded of Zorro's treachery.  Now, Sergeant, lock this man up.

[Mendoza steps back as Big Jim turns to his right then opens a green door.  Mendoza and the other lancer start to follow.]

de Soto
Soliz. . . [The other lancer stops and leans over de Soto's desk.] Ride up to Cielo Ridge.  Tell him he can bring the boy back at daybreak.

[Soliz nods and clicks his heels then leaves.  De Soto looks down at the letter then rubs his left index finger over his lips.]

[Interior shot of the secret cave as Diego (who had his shirt unbuttoned and untucked) pours a clear liquid from a small metal pan into a glass.]

Diego
Here we go.  [He lifts the glass to his nose and sniffs.] Not bad.

[He turns around and walks over to where Felipe is sitting.]

Diego [handing Felipe the glass]
This will help your headache.  Now, you didn't get a good look at your assailant?

[Felipe shakes his head as Diego takes off his shirt (yay!).]

Diego
Who would make a ransom demand in the name of Zorro? [He pauses for a moment.] Unless the ransom wasn't the true prize at all.

[He goes over and hangs up his white shirt on a clothes rack then grabs a black shirt.  Felipe sets down his glass then holds out his hands then points over his left shoulder with his left hand.]

Diego
No, it really doesn't matter who's behind all this, Felipe.  Right now, the real Zorro has a young kidnap victim to find.

[He puts his right arm into the right sleeve of the black shirt as he steps forward.]

[Exterior night shot of the hidden cave entrance as Zorro and Toronado ride out of it.  Toronado whinnies loudly.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Exterior shot of the countryside as the camera zooms up on a cave entrance at the top of a ridge.]

Pepe [off camera]
Why did you take me?  I thought you helped people.

[Interior shot of the cave as Pepe tries to peek out from under a blindfold tied over his eyes.  A man dressed in black sits opposite him.]

Imposter Zorro [getting to his feet and slapping at Pepe's hands]
Be quiet!  And don't touch that blindfold!

[Imposter Zorro goes over to Pepe's left then puts a piece of bread into Pepe's bound hands.  Pepe takes a bite of the bread.]

Pepe
This is stale!

[He slams the bread down on the rock he is sitting on.]

Imposter Zorro
All right!  All right!  I'll see what else we have.

[He goes over to Pepe's left again and fumbles around then turns back to face Pepe.]

Imposter Zorro [as he jumps back]
Aah!

Pepe
What's wrong?

Imposter Zorro [in a high-pitched voice]
Nothing! [He then clears his throat and speaks in a deeper voice.] Nothing.  Just a tree root.  I thought it was a snake.

Pepe [incredulously]
Zorro?  Afraid of snakes?

Imposter Zorro
And why not?  Every man is afraid of something. . .  Heights, the dark of night, spiders. . .

Pepe
And snakes.  If we were near Cielo Ridge, of course, that tree root probably would be a snake.

Imposter Zorro
What do you mean?  We are near Cielo Ridge.

Pepe
We are?  Well, as long as we're not in any of the caves of there.

Imposter Zorro
Why?  What's wrong with the caves?

Pepe
Everybody knows about those caves.  And the snakes!

Imposter Zorro
What snakes?

Pepe [dramatically]
At night, all the snakes in the mountains. . .the rattlers. . .the sidewinders. . .the cottonmouth vipers.  They all slither up to those caves.

Imposter Zorro [scared]
They do?  That's right.  Those horrible, slimy things.  They slither.

Pepe [still dramatically]
Thousands of horrible, vicious snakes.  All twisted together.  Fangs bared. . .  Tongues flicking. . .

[Imposter Zorro turns and bumps into the lancer, Soliz.]

Imposter Zorro
Aah!

Soliz [holding onto Imposter Zorro's shoulders and whispering]
The Alcalde wants him back by daybreak.

Imposter Zorro [with obvious relief]
Good.

[He turns away.  Soliz pats him on the back.  Pepe sits on his rock with his blindfold still in place.]

[Exterior night shot of the countryside as Zorro and Toronado gallop across it.]

[Exterior night shot of the Zorro bringing Toronado to a halt.]

[Night shot from Zorro's point of view of two ‘D' shaped horseshoe prints in the mud (shot originally from "Honor Thy Father" Episode 1.13).]

[Exterior night shot of the countryside of Zorro rides Toronado off to their right.]

[Exterior night shot of the countryside as Zorro rides Toronado to the top of a ridge as a coyote howls off camera.  Zorro brings Toronado to a halt then looks around.  He lifts up his right hand then turns to the right as Toronado snorts.]

[Exterior night shot of the countryside as Zorro and Toronado gallop across it.]

[Exterior shot of de Soto's office as a lancer walks to his right as the sun rises over the horizon and a rooster crows.  The lancer turns and walks to his left]

[Closeup shot of a ring of keys hanging on a wall.]

[Interior shot of the cuartel jail as Big Jim looks through the bars of his cell door and sighs.  He turns and goes over to his cot and sits down.  A door opens and de Soto enters the jail.]

de Soto
Captain Jarrett. . . [He shuts the door.] I'm afraid I have some bad news for you.

Big Jim
What is it?  Pepe's all right, isn't he?

[De Soto walk up to the cell door with a pair of saddlebags on his left shoulder.]

de Soto
I honestly don't know.

Big Jim [suspiciously]
What's happened?

de Soto
We almost had him.  My men tracked Zorro to his mountain lair and they had him surrounded.  But then he used the boy as a hostage to win his freedom.

Big Jim [standing up and coming up to his cell door]
If he hurts Pepe. . .

de Soto
I'm afraid my men had to let him go.  He says if I don't give him the reward money for you now, he says he'll. . .  Well, he's just too ruthless to deal with.

Big Jim [rattling the door bars]
I'll kill him!  If he touches Pepe, I'll kill him!

[A horse neighs off camera.]

de Soto
That must be him now.

[Big Jim stares as de Soto, who nods his head toward the cell's window.  Big Jim goes over to the window.  De Soto tries to hide a smirk.]

[Shot from Big Jim's point of view through the barred cell window of the imposter Zorro as he rides under an archway then comes to a halt.  Pepe sits in the saddle in front of the imposter Zorro.]

de Soto [off camera at first]
Here's the reward money, Zorro.

[He walks up to the imposter Zorro and Pepe holding out the saddlebags.]

[Closeup shot of the cell window as Big Jim looks through it.]

de Soto [off camera]
Now let the boy go.

[Exterior shot of the cuartel as the imposter Zorro lifts Pepe off the horse and hands him to de Soto.  De Soto hands the imposter Zorro the saddlebags.  The imposter Zorro turns his horse around and rides back through the archway.]

Imposter Zorro
Huh!

[Closeup shot of the cell window as Big Jim looks through it.]

Big Jim
Pepe!

[Exterior shot of the cuartel as de Soto turns to his right, still holding Pepe in his arms.]

Pepe
Papa!

[De Soto carries Pepe to his right.]

[Closeup shot of the cell window as Big Jim looks through it.]

Big Jim [smiling]
Pepe!

[Exterior shot of a cave as Toronado stands in front of it.  Zorro emerges from the cave then looks around before hopping onto Toronado's back.]

Zorro
We're too late, Toronado.  But their trail leads back to the pueblo.

[He and Toronado ride off to their right.]

[Interior shot of the cuartel jail as Big Jim stands by his cell door as de Soto carries Pepe up to the door.]

Pepe [as de Soto sets him on his feet]
Pa!

Big Jim [crouching down and putting his hands on Pepe's shoulders then his cheeks]
You're all right.

Pepe
Si, Papa. [He looks up at de Soto.] You said you wouldn't arrest him!

de Soto
Yes. . .  But that was before you were kidnapped by Zorro.  And now the reward money's been advanced.  But. . . [He looks at Big Jim.] if those funds could be recouped from that treasure you mentioned.  The treasure you sent your men on that wild goose chase for last month.

Big Jim [standing up to look at de Soto]
The treasure of Port-au-Prince?

de Soto [smiling]
Yes!  That's the name you gave to it.  If that treasure were sufficient to cover the reward, we could get you released.

Big Jim
Pity is. . .there's no such treasure.

de Soto [flustered]
Well. . .   But. . .  Your men. . .  You brought your men to Los Angeles to help search for the treasure but then you gave them a false map so you could have it all for yourself.

Big Jim
How many times do I have to tell you.  We pirates have a knack for twisting the truth to suit our needs.

de Soto
Then it was. . .just a lie?  Well. . .then prepare yourself to leave for Florida.  Tomorrow.

Pepe
But that's not fair!  You have lancers!  They could catch Zorro!  Put him in jail!

de Soto [looking down at Pepe]
It's not that simple.  My men are constantly on the hunt for Zorro.  But he only shows up when he sees fit.  Uh, at the signs of rebellion and public disturbances, things like that.  Zorro's very unpredictable.

Big Jim
Aye.  Sometimes he's a friend, sometimes he's a foe.

de Soto
Well, if you excuse me, I have your extradition papers to prepare. [He puts his hand on Pepe's head.] You have five minutes.

[He turns and leaves the jail.  Big Jim crouches down again.]

Pepe
Papa, what are we going to do?

Big Jim
We've got to get out of here. [He points behind Pepe.] Bring me those keys.

[Pepe turns and sees the ring of keys hanging on the wall.]

Pepe [turning back to Big Jim]
It could be a trap.

Big Jim
We've got nothing to lose, son.

[Pepe turns then runs over to where the keys are hanging and grabs them.  He comes back over to the cell then puts a key into the lock.]

Big Jim [standing]
Atta-boy!

[Exterior shot of the cuartel yard as two lancers walk under an archway then disappear  into a narrow alleyway between two buildings.  Thuds are heard off camera.]

Lancers
Ow!  Uh!

[The two lancers come rolling back out into the cuartel yard.]

Pepe [off camera]
Nice punch, Big Jim.  Let's get out of here.

[Big Jim comes out of the alleyway and looks at the lancers lying on the ground.  He turns around and holds out his left hand and beckons with his fingers.  Pepe runs up next to him.]

Pepe [pointing forward at some horses]
We can take those horses.

Big Jim
I'm a pirate, son, not a horse thief.

Pepe
But we've got to get away!

Big Jim
Not until we've swabbed the decks with the blood of Zorro.

Pepe
But you heard the Alcalde.  Zorro's impossible to find.

Big Jim
Then we must give him a reason to find us.  Come on.

[He takes Pepe's hand and leads him through the cuartel gate and out into the plaza.]

[Interior shot of de Soto's office as de Soto looks out through the narrow opening of the front doors.  He then shuts the door and runs over to stand in front of a gun rack.  Mendoza runs into the office from the opposite direction.]

Mendoza
Mi Alcalde!  Your prisoner has escaped!

de Soto [calmly]
Really?

[Mendoza runs over to the front doors and opens the right one a crack then peeks out of it.]

[Interior shot of the tavern as Big Jim and Pepe walk through its front doors.]

Big Jim [bending down and pointing to his left]
Find cover and batten down the hatches, son.

[He gives Pepe a little push forward.  Pepe crouches down beside the end of the bar as Big Jim walks past him.  Big Jim walks up to a table of lancers playing cards and upends their table.]

Big Jim
Eeyah!

[He then grabs a lancer by the shoulders and tosses him to his left.]

Pepe [off camera]
Do it, Big Jim!  Get ‘em!

[Closeup shot of Pepe crouched beside the end of the bar as several lancers run past him.]

[Interior shot of the tavern as Big Jim grabs two more lancers and knocks their heads together.]

Pepe [off camera]
Get ‘em, Big Jim!  Get ‘em!  Yeah!

[Big Jim then pushes two lancers toward the front doors of the tavern.]

[Exterior shot of the tavern as the two lancers roll out onto the porch.]

[Interior shot of de Soto's office as Mendoza peeks out the front door.  He leans back then forward again, holding his left hand to his mouth.]

[Exterior shot of the tavern as the two lancers get to their hands and knees.]

[Interior shot of de Soto's office as Mendoza closes the door and turns around.]

Mendoza [going over to where de Soto is standing in front of his desk]
Alcalde!  Big Jim is in the tavern. [He points at the front doors.] He's attacking lancers!

de Soto [calmly]
Sergeant, that's terrible. [He turns away from Mendoza.] Wonder why he would do that?

[He chuckles evilly.  Mendoza goes back and looks out the front doors again.]

[Exterior shot of the tavern as Big Jim walks out onto the porch.]

Big Jim [looking around]
Zorro! [The two lancers slink away.] I know you're out here somewhere! [He holds up his fists.]  Come and get what Big Jim Jarrett's got for you!

[Montage of exterior shots of the pueblo's buildings.]

Big Jim [off camera]
You mutinous coward!  I'll tear this town apart!

[Exterior shot of the tavern as Big Jim turns around and goes back inside.]

[Interior shot of de Soto's office as Mendoza shuts the front door and runs over to de Soto.]

Mendoza
Alcalde, I'll get the men.

[He salutes.]

de Soto
Excellent idea, Sergeant.

[Mendoza runs across the room, grabbing his hat and putting it on as he runs.  He goes through a door.]

de Soto [after Mendoza is gone]
You do that, Sergeant.

[He chuckles evilly.  A horse whinnies off camera.]

[Exterior shot of the pueblo as Zorro and Toronado ride up behind a building.  Zorro then climbs up onto the building's roof and walks across it.]

[Interior shot of the tavern where Big Jim is tossing lancers around as people watch.]

Big Jim [throwing a lancer across the room]
Yah!

[He punches a lancer in the face then hits him with a wooden stool.  Victoria comes through some curtains behind the bar.]

Victoria [angrily, to Big Jim]
What do you think you are doing?

Big Jim [coming over and grabbing Victoria's arm]
Where's Zorro, wench?

[Zorro appears on the balcony behind Big Jim.  Victoria tries to pull her arm out of Big Jim's grasp.]

Zorro [off camera at first]
Let her go!

[Big Jim lets go of Victoria's arm as he spins around.]

Zorro
Or you'll regret it.

[He climbs over the balcony's railing then jumps down to the floor.]

Big Jim
You're going to regret ever laying your hands on Pepe.

Zorro [walking forward and jumping over an upended table]
Big Jim Jarrett, I'm not the man who kidnapped your son to force your surrender.

Big Jim [turning to his left]
Pepe, is this the man?

Pepe [peeking out from beside the end of the bar]
He was dressed just like that.  And he said he was Zorro.  Yes, that must be him!

Big Jim [putting his hands around Zorro's throat]
Aargh!

[Victoria looks to her left as Big Jim pushes Zorro backward across the room, his hands still around Zorro's throat.  Victoria and another woman (Pilar?) crouch down beside Pepe.  Big Jim backs Zorro up against a wall.  Zorro kicks Big Jim in the right shin and Big Jim lets go of Zorro's throat.]

Big Jim [bending over]
Yay!

[He turns and picks up a wooden stool then spins around, aiming the stool at Zorro's head.  Zorro ducks and the stool splinters against the wall.  Zorro grabs Big Jim's right shoulder and turns him around to face him then punches Big Jim in the face.]

[Exterior shot of the plaza as Mendoza and several other lancers run of the cuartel gates.]

Mendoza [as he runs over to de Soto who is coming out of his office]
Alcalde!  Alcalde! [He points to his right.] Only Zorro can fight like that!

de Soto [sarcastically]
Very perceptive, Sergeant.

Mendoza
That man will kill him!

de Soto [calmly]
You really think so?

[Interior shot of the tavern as Big Jim throws a chair at Zorro who spins out of the way.  The chair goes behind the bar.]

Zorro
Pepe, I'm not the man who kidnapped you.

[Pepe comes out and faces Zorro.]

Pepe
Yes you are! [He goes over and stands next to Big Jim who puts his hands on Pepe's shoulders.] I can prove it! [He points to the floor.] Look out for the snake!

[Mendoza and several lancers run into the tavern.  Mendoza takes off his hat.]

Zorro [looking down at the floor then at Pepe]
I don't understand.

Pepe
But you're afraid of them!  I said, "Look out for the snake!"

Sepulveda [standing to Mendoza's left]
Snake?   Where? [He and Mendoza look down at the floor.] Where?

Pepe
It wasn't Zorro! [He points to his right.] It was him!

[Mendoza turns and stares at a guilty-faced Sepulveda.  De Soto stands in the tavern doorway and points his right index finger forward.]

de Soto
Zorro's helping the prisoner to escape!  Arrest him, lancers!

[Several lancers rush at Zorro, drawing out their swords.  Zorro fends them off with his saber and they fall to the floor.  Another lancer comes at Zorro with his sword.]

Voice
Look out!

Zorro [as he fences with the lancer]
Take the boy!

[Big Jim picks up a table and hits a lancer on the head with it.  Zorro drives several lancers backward to where Mendoza is cowering against a wall.  Big Jim picks up Pepe and runs out of the tavern.  De Soto comes up to Zorro, sword drawn.  Zorro knocks the sword out of de Soto's hand.]

Zorro [pointing his saber at de Soto]
Allow another lancer to impersonate me again and they'll all be wearing black. . .at your funeral.

[He slashes a ‘Z' into the left side of de Soto's jacket.  Then Zorro steps over to Victoria.]

Zorro
I apologize for the inconvenience, but the Alcalde will gladly pay for any repairs. [He whips his saber up and points it at de Soto's throat.] Won't you?

de Soto
Of course.

[Zorro takes the saber away.]

Zorro [to Victoria]
As always. . . [He lifts up her left hand.] You make it a perfect evening.

[He kisses her hand then turns to his right where de Soto and Mendoza stand in front of the tavern's front door.  Zorro snatches de Soto's sword away from Mendoza then holds it out to de Soto.]

Zorro
Yours, I believe.

[De Soto reaches out his hand to take the sword but Zorro lets it drop and it falls to the floor.  People laugh as Mendoza bends over.]

de Soto [angrily]
Leave it!

[Mendoza straightens back up and stares at de Soto as people continue to laugh.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Exterior shot of the beach as Big Jim and Pepe look out at the ocean.  Zorro rides Toronado up behind them.  Big Jim and Pepe turn around as Zorro and Toronado come to a halt.]

Zorro
Where will you go?

Big Jim
There's a ship in San Pedro, fixin' to set sail for the Caribbean.

Pepe
Señor, do you know the de la Vegas?

Zorro [smiling]
Yes, I think I do.

Pepe
Please tell Don Diego I said goodbye to Felipe.

Zorro
I certainly will. [to Big Jim] You have a fine young man there.  See to it that he gets a good education.

Big Jim
You can bet on it.  But first we must track down this little stash I know about.  The treasure of Port-au-Prince.

Zorro [looking confused]
But I thought you told the Alcalde there was no treasure.  That it was all a lie.

Big Jim [grinning]
I told him it was the truth too.

Zorro [smiling]
So which is it?

Big Jim
Can you keep a confidence?

Zorro
Well, I think so.  I am the one wearing the mask.

Big Jim
Well, there's something you should know about pirates, mate.  When it comes to the question of treasure, never believe anything you hear.

[Zorro chuckles.]

Big Jim [picking up Pepe]
Treasure or not, you're the greatest treasure any man could hope for.

[Big Jim and Pepe hug.]

Big Jim [to Zorro]
Thanks for my son.

[Zorro nods.]

Big Jim [to Pepe]
What say you and I set sail for Treasure Island?

Pepe
Where's that, Big Jim?

Big Jim
Treasure Island?  That's a place where dreams are made.  Where dreams come true.

[He turns and salutes at Zorro, who salutes back.  Then Big Jim carries Pepe toward the ocean.]

Pepe [voiceover]
And together, Big Jim and me started off on our first adventure.

[Toronado whinnies off camera as Big Jim puts Pepe down and they both walk toward the ocean.]
