1.  PETER ANTON ELBERT was born between 1808-12 in Bavaria Germany probably near Aschaffenberg and died 19 Jul 1870 in Rolla Phelps Co Missouri.  His parents are unknown.  He married (1)BARBARA MAYER/MEYER by 1846 (2)MARGARETHE FISCHER by 1864.  Barbara was born between 1808-1816 and died before 1864.  Her parents are unknown.  Margarethe was born about 1841 in Germany and died 14 Jul 1924 in St Louis St Louis Co Missouri.  She is buried at Calvary Cemetery in St Louis Missouri.  She was the daughter of LUDWIG FISCHER & BARBARA KLEIN.

Peter served as a calvary officer in the Germany army.  He brought his second wife, infant son and two sons from his first marriage (along with his mother & brother-in-law) with him to America to escape the turmoil in Europe.  The family arrived at Castle Gardens in New York City in July of 1866 as passengers aboard the ‘Bark Johanna'.  Their passenger listing as is follows:

The family names was probably ‘Elberth' prior to immigration.  The ‘th' sound in German is pronounced as a hard ‘t', so Elberth was most likely written as ‘Elbert' by the clerk recording their name.

The family first traveled to Ohio then Indiana by 1868.  They eventually went to St Louis where Margarethe has relatives.  They finally settled near Rolla Missouri, Peter working for a farmer named Herman.

Evidence has come to light that Peter was not gored to death by a bull as passed down through family legend.  A newspaper article from the Rolla Weekly Herald dated 21 Jul 1870 contained the following story:

"Sudden Death- Last Tuesday, a German named Peter Anton Elbert, living on Mr Herman's farm, about three miles from Rolla, came to town for the purpose of buying cattle from Julius Pezold, and while bargaining for them, suddenly fell backwards, and died in a few minutes.  He was aged about sixty years.  Coroner Stillman Ruggles summoned a jury, who decided that the deceased man came to his death by apoplexy."

No mention of a bull!  It is interesting to note that an inquest was held concerning his death, which would lead one to believe that something criminal might have occurred.  Peter is buried in an unmarked grave in or near Rolla Missouri.

Margarethe and her children returned penniless to the St Louis area to live with relatives after Peter's death.  She married her second husband WENCESLAUS ‘WENZEL' HUBEL 20 Aug 1871 in St Louis.  He was born in 1839 and died 8 Jun 1914.  He is also buried at Calvary Cemetery in St Louis.  Margarethe & Wenzel's marriage was arranged by their brothers.

Mary's surname of Blumer evolved over the years to be spelled as Bloomer.  Blumer is the name used on the marriage register.  After John's death, Mary married HENRY KASH in Oct 1917 in Kansas City Wyandotte Co Kansas.  He was born about 1843 in Hamburg Germany and died unknown.  According to a Kansas City area newspaper, John & Mary had 17 children together, but only 13 of them are known to researchers.

4.  EMMERICH ‘EMIL' ELBERT was born 11 Feb 1865 in Bavaria Germany probably near Aschaffenburg and died 22 Dec 1956 in Elyria Lorain Co Ohio.  He married FRANCES STENGELE 31 May 1886 in St Louis St Louis Co Missouri by Father Reis.  She was born in 26 Jul 1869 in Maxville Missouri and died 18 Apr 1952 in Elyria Lorain Co Ohio.  She was the daughter of MAXIMILLIAN STENGELE & MAGDALLENA FUCHS.  Emil & Frances are both buried at St Mary's Cemetery in Elyria Ohio.

Emil and his twin brother (name unknown), were born prematurely.  Emil weighed on 24 ½ ounces (1 pound 8 ½ ounces).  His brother lived only 11 days.  Emil was fed drops of milk through a bent wheat straw by his mother & grandmother.  He was strong enough by the age of 6 months to withstand the ocean voyage from Germany to New York.  After his father Peter's death in 1870, his mother moved the family (which now included 3 sisters) from Rolla Missouri back to St Louis.  She had to place Emil and his oldest sister Anna in an orphanage as she was unable to care for them.  They were both taken in by well-to-do families.  After their mother's remarriage, she sought to reclaim her children.  Anna was found easily but Emil was harder to find and when he was, his foster parents did not wish to give him up.  Finally after a two month struggle, they reluctantly returned him to his mother.

Emil was a machinist and worked all over the country, including Colorado, Illinois, Ohio and also in Montreal Canada.  He finally settled his family in Elyria Ohio where he eventually opened a bicycle repair shop.

9.  FRANK BERNARD ELBERT was born 4 Nov 1871 in St Louis St Louis Co Missouri and died 30 Jan 1909 in Seneca Newton Co Missouri.  He is buried at St Mary's Cemetery Seneca Newton Co Missouri.  He married WILHELMINA CHRISTINA ‘MINNIE' SIMMONS 7 Jan 1891 in Pierce City Lawrence Co Missouri.  She was born 7 Jan 1872 in Lawrence Douglas Co Kansas and died 8 Sep 1916 in Banning Riverside Co California of tuberculosis.  She is buried at Sunnyslope Cemetery Banning California.  She was the daughter of WILLIAM SIMMONS & ROSALEE SCHWOLSKI (see SIMMONS for more information).

Frank was only 37 years old when he passed away.  He was holding his youngest son, Carl, only 18 days old, on his lap when he died.  Minnie's family also lived in the Capps Creek Township of Barry Co in 1880 and it is possible that Frank & Minnie were childhood sweethearts since both were only 19 when they married.  They obtained their marriage license in Barry Co Missouri because the county seat, Cassville, was closer than Lawrence Co's seat of Mt Vernon.  They were married at St Mary's Catholic Church in Pierce City by Father Thomas Lustenberger, witnesses were Antonius (Anton) Elbert & Maria Remer.  Minnie also died young at the age 44 of tuberculosis.  About 1914, she moved her family to California because she was told the air was better there.  Before she died, 6 of her surviving 7 children were placed in a orphanage in California when she became too ill to care for them.  It took the oldest son Alvin & his wife Mary several years to get his brothers released to their custody.

There are several discrepancies about Charles' age.  Social Security records state he was born in 1875.  The 1880 census lists him as 4 but it most likely took place before his 5th birthday in July.  His marriage license has his age as 28 in September of 1906, which means he would have been born in 1878.  His age is 31 on the 1910 census when it should have been at least 34.  He was baptized 1 Aug 1875 at St Liberius Catholic Church in St Louis Missouri, sponsors were Constantin Baumgarten & Sophia Deis

Peter was baptized 2 Nov 1885 at St Mary's Catholic Church Pierce City Missouri.  Sponsors were Peter Velten & Katherine Histher.  Peter & Maggie were married at St Mary's Pierce City.  Witnesses were Frank Bischoff & Josephine Grieske (Gieske?).  Their marriage license was obtained in Barry Co Missouri 7 Aug 1907.

Peter was struck and killed by lightening while he, his wife Maggie, his brother Robert and his family were traveling through Oklahoma on their way west.  His body was brought back to Missouri and he was buried 12 Aug 1915 in St Mary's Cemetery Pierce City Missouri.  Peter & Maggie had no children and it is not known what happened to Maggie after Peter's death.

20.  LEO JOHN ELBERT was born 2 Sep 1891 near Pierce City Lawrence Co Missouri and died 8 Aug 1962 in either Lawrence or Barry Co Missouri.  He married ROSEMARY ZURALSKI by 1918.  She was born 22 Feb 1899 and died 27 Nov 1971.  She was the daughter of FRANK ZURALSKI & EVE ABRAMOVITZ.  (Eve was the sister of George Abramovitz who married Leo's sister Barbara).  Leo & Rosemary are both buried at St Mary's Cemetery Pierce City Missouri.

Leo & Rosemary had a dairy farm near Monett Missouri.  After their deaths, their three sons lived and ran the farm.  None of them ever married.

32.  FRANK HENRY ELBERT was born 25 Jan 1895 near Pierce City Lawrence Co Missouri and died 16 Feb 1955 in Longview Cowlitz Co Washington.  He is buried at Woodbine Cemetery in Rainier Columbia Co Oregon.  He married JESSIE STEPP 12 Nov 1930.  She was born 30 Sep 1909 in Louisville Kentucky and died 29 Jan 1982 in Coos Bay Coos Co Oregon.  She was the daughter of HARDEN D STEPP & HARRIET JANE BLACK.

Frank was baptized 22 Feb 1898 at St Mary's Catholic Church.  His baptismal name was Francis Henry Elbert.  Sponsors were Henry Witt & Gertrude Geissen.  Frank & Jessie were married by a Catholic priest 28 Dec 1931 in Seneca Newton Co Missouri.

Frank Elbert Dies; Funeral Rites Held Monday Morning

Frank Henry Elbert, 57, Rainier, died in a Longview Hospital (Wednesday) Feb 16 (1955).  He had been a resident of Rainier for the past six years.  He was born in Missouri Jan 25 1898.  He was a carpenter by trade.

Survivors include the widow, Jessie; six sons, Frank, John, Francis, Eugene, Donald and Louis, all of Rainier; three daughters, Lillie, Kathryn and Mary Louise, all of Rainier; five brothers, George of IL, Lawrence of MO, Charles of TN, Raymond of CA and Daniel J Elbert Sr of Rainier.

Rosary was said at the Coleman Chapel in St Helens at 7:30 pm Sunday.  Funeral services were held Monday at the Rainier Catholic Church Monday at 10 am with the Rev R Fleming officiating.  Interment was in the Hudson Cemetery.

33.  LAWRENCE CHARLES ELBERT was born 27 May 1901 near Pierce City Lawrence Co Missouri and died 30 Dec 1963 in Joplin Jasper Co Missouri.  He married ANNA FRANCES HOFF 24 Jul 1924.  She was born 15 Dec 1898 in Fairland Indian Territory Oklahoma and died 22 Nov 1992 in Joplin Jasper Co Missouri.  She was the daughter of WILLIAM J HOFF & KATHERINE WEISS and sister of Mary Hoff who married Lawrence's brother Alvin (see above).  Lawrence & Anna are both buried at St Mary's Cemetery in Seneca Newton Co Missouri.

Lawrence was baptized twice, first on 9 Jun 1901 at St Mary's Catholic Church in Pierce City Missouri with the name Lawrence Carl and sponsors Carl Elbert & Mary Elbert.  He was baptized again on 16 Jul 1901, this time at St Patrick's Catholic Church also Pierce City with the name Lawrence Charles.  Sponsors were Charles Elbert & Mary Elbert.  This is a mystery as to why he was christened a week apart in two different churches.  Charles & Carl are interchangeable, both deriving from the Latin name ‘Carolus'.

34.  JOHN DANIEL/DANIEL JOHN ELBERT SR was born 4 Sep 1903 near Pierce City Lawrence Co Missouri and died 21 Sep 1977 in Longview Cowlitz Co Washington.  He married VADIS LEE SCOTT 7 Jan 1925 in Neosho Newton Co Missouri.  She was born 26 Aug 1903 in Galena Cherokee Co Kansas and died 1 Jan 1981 in Longview Cowlitz Co Washington.  She was the daughter of WILLIAM ELLIS SCOTT & MINNIE BELLE KEITH.  Daniel & Vadis are both buried at Woodbine Cemetery in Rainier Columbia Co Oregon.

Daniel was christened John Daniel but switched his name to Daniel John.  Census records show the use of the name Dan as early as 1910.  Social security records indicate he was born 3 Oct 1903.  Where this information came from is not known.  He was known as ‘Fritz' as a young man.  Daniel was a farmer and carpenter who liked to travel.  He lived in Missouri, Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico, Arkansas, California and British Columbia Canada before finally settling in Oregon (where he had lived twice before).

Ray lived for a while in California before in Medford.

36.  HERMAN CARL/CARL HERMAN ‘CHUCK' ELBERT was born 12 Jan 1909 near Seneca Newton Co Missouri and died 18 Oct 1963 in Kingsport Sullivan Co Tennessee.  He is buried at Seneca City Cemetery in Seneca Newton Co Missouri.  He married (1)ALVA MAE EHRHART 21 Apr 1937 (divorced) (2)NELLIE SHARP Nov 1951.  Alva was born and died unknown and her parents are unknown.  Nellie was born 14 Sep 1897 and died Aug 1984 in Tazewell Claiborne Co Tennessee.

Chuck, as he was known, was baptized Herman Carl.  He also switched his name around as a young man.  His headstone reads Carl Herman.  He was just 18 days old when his father Frank died.  He was raised by his older brother Alvin & his wife Mary after his mother's death seven years later.  Chuck was also a boxer, fighting as a heavyweight.

37.  CATHERINE ANNA ELBERT was born 22 Dec 1898 in Kansas City Kansas and died 6 Apr 1959.  She married ALBERT LINDERS by 1920.  He was born 30 Nov 1887 and died 29 Sep 1957.  His parents are unknown.  Albert served during WWI as a sergeant of Battery A 80 Field Artillery unit.  Catherine & Albert are both buried at St Mary's Cemetery Seneca Newton Co Missouri.
