First US Airdate 5 December 1992   Episode 4.7

[Exterior wide shot of the de la Vega hacienda.]

Don Alejandro [off camera at first]
Don Quixote. . .

[Interior shot of Don Alejandro sitting in the library of the hacienda, reading from a big red book.]

Don Alejandro [quoting from the book]
I dub thee Sancho Panza, my squire.

[He chuckles then takes a drink of wine, finishing off the glass.  He sets the glass down on a nearby table and knocks off a round paperweight and it falls to the floor.]

Don Alejandro
Blast.

[The paperweight rolls into the fireplace and Don Alejandro gets up and goes over to pick it up as he still tries to read the book.  Felipe walks toward the library.  Don Alejandro bends down and grabs the paperweight then stands up and hits his head on the inside of the fireplace.]

Don Alejandro
Aah!

[He drops the paperweight and stumbles backward.  He grabs the mantle to steady himself and the panel in the back of the fireplace opens up.  Felipe was walking past the library but stops then runs into the room as Don Alejandro falls backward through the opened panel.  Felipe hurries in after him.  A thud is heard off camera.]

[Interior shot of the secret cave where Felipe stops at the top of the steps.  He then hurries down them and crouches down an unconscious Don Alejandro, who is lying face down on the cave floor.  Felipe stands back up and runs back out of the cave.  Don Alejandro starts to wake up.  He gets up on his hands and knees then pushes himself up to his knees.]

Don Alejandro [woozily]
What on earth happened?  Where am I?

[He looks around as he struggles to get to his feet.]

Don Alejandro
Hello?  Um. . .

[He gets to his feet and puts his hand on his head.  He walks over to the lab table.]

Don Alejandro
What is this place?

[He leans down and puts his hands on the table then looks at a dark blue brew bubbling in a large round glass container.]

Don Alejandro
Who am I?

[He grimaces in pain.  He waves his hands near his head then turns around.]

Don Alejandro
Where am I?

[He starts toward the steps then turns back around.]

Don Alejandro
Who am I?

[Toronado snorts.  Don Alejandro starts toward him.]

Don Alejandro
Hello.

[He snaps his fingers as he nears Toronado.]

Don Alejandro [putting his hand on Toronado's nose.]
Hey.

[He points at Toronado then turns around and see the black clothes draped on the clothes rack.]

Don Alejandro
Aah.  Of course.

[Toronado starts to whinny.]

Don Alejandro [reaching toward the clothes]
Shh. . .

[He takes Zorro's black mask from the rack.]

Don Alejandro
Of course. [He chuckles and nods his head then puts the mask on his face.] I am. . .Zorro.

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Interior shot of the secret cave as Felipe leads Diego down the steps and pointing at the floor where Don Alejandro had fallen.]

Diego
You're certain he fell right here?

[Diego looks around, holding out his hands.]

Diego
Must have regained consciousness.

[Felipe shrugs then looks to his left.  Diego goes over to the clothes rack where a white shirt and brown trousers now hang.  Diego takes the shirt off the rack, looks at it, then frowns.  He looks over at Felipe, who seems nervous.  Diego tosses the shirt back on the rack, looking upset.  He looks over his shoulder at Toronado's empty stall.  He then goes over to the steps and picks up the red book sitting at the top of them.]

Diego [after reading the title then looking up at Felipe]
Felipe, do you know of any windmills in the pueblo?

[Felipe looks confused.]

[Exterior shot of Don Alejandro, dressed as Zorro, riding Toronado across the countryside.  He brings Toronado to a halt and he lifts up his sword.]

Don Alejandro
Woe to thee, evildoers!

[Exterior wide shot of the pueblo from behind the church.]

Don Alejandro [off camera at first]
Have a thousands' wrong to avenge.

[Toronado whinnies and prances nervously.]

Don Alejandro
What's wrong with you, Rocinante, my valiant steed?  You act as though you don't know me.

[Toronado bobs his head and nickers.  Don Alejandro lifts his sword back up into the air.]

Don Alejandro
Zorro rides!

[He urges Toronado toward the pueblo.]

[Interior shot of the tavern where Mendoza is playing cards with two men.  Mendoza puts a card down on the table and smiles as he hold up his right index finger.  One of the men, an older man with a white beard,  gives Mendoza a card.  Mendoza puts it with his other four cards and then looks dismayed.  He throws his cards down onto the table.]

Mendoza [pointing at the second man, who is younger and clean shaven]
You are a very lucky man, Señor. [He eyes the men suspiciously.] Where did you muchachos say you were from?

Older Man with Beard
We didn't.

Mendoza
You know, you look very familiar.

[Victoria comes up behind Mendoza, carrying a dusty bottle of wine.]

Victoria
Mendoza!  How many times have I told you there is to be no gambling in this tavern.

Mendoza [smiling insincerely]
I. . .  I . . .  Must get back to work.  Please forgive me.

[He gets up and looks at Victoria who is glaring at him, her right hand on her right hip.]

Mendoza [bowing at Victoria]
Con permiso.

[He walks away.]

Older Man with Beard
We were just having some harmless fun, my pretty señorita.

Victoria [angrily as she picks up the cards]
In the first place, Señor, gambling is not harmless fun.  And in the second place, Mendoza doesn't earn enough and he has the card sense of a turnip.  And in the third place, don't even think in you wildest dreams that I could be your señorita.

[She walks away.]

Older Man with Beard
I love it when they play hard to get.

[He chuckles.]

[Exterior shot of de Soto's office as a lancer stands in front of a bulletin board on which hangs several wanted posters (including Zorro's).  Mendoza comes up and grabs the collar of the lancer's jacket.]

Mendoza
Button that collar, Lancer.

[The lancer moves his head as he buttons up his collar.  Mendoza notices the poster that was behind the lancer's head.  The poster reads ‘Wanted Fernando Esteban, Dead or Alive, Reward 300 Pesos'.]

Mendoza
Madre de Dios.

[He pulls down the poster to the left of Esteban's then Esteban's as well.]

Mendoza [as he turns and walks away]
Madre de Dios.

[Interior shot of the tavern as Fernando Esteban and his companion walk over to the bar behind which Victoria is working.]

Esteban
Uh, Señorita, my brother and I, we just had a little wager. . .

Victoria [annoyed]
Didn't I just explain to you that gambling. . .

Esteban
Si, si, you told us.  (He then says something in untranslated Spanish that sounds like portido hora.)  But you see, I have just bet him ten pesos that you would give me a kiss.

[He touches his fingers to his lips.]

Victoria [disgustedly]
Then I think you should pay him his ten pesos.

[She turns her back to the two men.]

Esteban
We shall see.

[He picks up a wine bottle that was sitting on the bar, then extends his arm to its full length and lets it go.  It shatters on the floor.]

Victoria [spinning back around]
Are you crazy?

[Interior shot of de Soto and Mendoza in de Soto's office.  De Soto is looking at the wanted posters as Mendoza stands to his left, holding his hat under his left arm.]

de Soto
Well, these men should sufficiently be in their cups by now, Sergeant.  Prepare your men to surround the tavern.

Mendoza [saluting and clicking his heels together]
Oh, si, Alcalde.

[He turns and goes out a door behind him.  De Soto still looks at the wanted posters.]

de Soto [in a disgusted tone]
Four hundred pesos.

[He sets the posters down on his desk then follows after Mendoza.]

[Closeup shot of the tavern door as customers run out of it. The sound of breaking glass is heard]

Esteban [off camera at first]
Caution, Señorita.

[Interior shot of the tavern where Esteban is holding Victoria's right wrist with his left hand as the bar separates them.]

Esteban [holding up his right index finger]
Is all this worth one little kiss?

[He then put his right hand on top of her captured hand.]

Don Alejandro [appearing at the balcony, still dressed as Zorro]
Filthy heathens!

[Esteban and his brother turn around and look upward.  Victoria smiles.]

Victoria
Zorro!

Don Alejandro [with his left leg draped over the railing]
Remove your hands from the lady.  [Esteban pulls Victoria over to her left.]  Or I'll remove them [His voice rises.] From your wrists! [under his breath] Fly, Zorro.

[He jumps off the balcony and grabs onto the chandelier.  He hangs from it but it barely swings.]

Don Alejandro [looking up at the chandelier and trying to make it swing]
Very peculiar.

[Esteban and his brother rush toward Don Alejandro with their swords drawn.]

Don Alejandro [still looking upward and trying to swing the chandelier]
I'm sure this always. . .worked. . .before. . . [He looks down.] Aah!

[Esteban and his brother start thrusting their swords at Don Alejandro's feet.  Don Alejandro kicks at them.]

Don Alejandro
Aaay!

[Victoria covers her eyes with her left hand.  Don Alejandro lets go of the chandelier and falls on top of the two brothers, knocking them both to the floor.  Victoria looks surprised.]

Don Alejandro [getting to his knees then turning to Victoria]
Victory!

[He gets up to his feet and walks toward the bar.]

Don Alejandro
Lady. [He takes her left hand.] Are you injured?

Victoria [kind of stunned]
No.

Don Alejandro
Then I dedicate this victory to thy radiance which has kindled my inspiration.

[Victoria grabs his arms and pushes him.]

Victoria
Look out!

[Don Alejandro turns around.  Esteban and his brother are on their feet, waving their swords at him.]

Esteban
So. . . [He points his sword at Don Alejandro.] This is Zorro, is it?

[Don Alejandro unsheathes his saber and holds it upward.]

Don Alejandro
At your service, Señor.

Esteban [advancing toward Don Alejandro]
Let us see. . . [He and his brother circle around Don Alejandro.] if your skill matches your reputation.

Don Alejandro
Nay!  I shall not blunt my sword against such unworthy opponents. [He moves his saber from his right hand to his left.] Therefore. . . [He pulls out his whip from under his cape.] You shall feel the sting of my lash!

Esteban
And you shall feel this.

[He runs toward Don Alejandro who tries to crack his whip at him but instead it gets wrapped around a post that is behind him.  Don Alejandro tries to pull it free but is pulled off his feet instead just missing getting skewered by Esteban.  Esteban goes past Don Alejandro and the tip of his sword sticks into the same post that the whip is coiled around.  Victoria uncovers her eyes in disbelief.  Esteban tries to remove his sword  from the post but can't.

Esteban [turning to his brother]
Careful!  He's known for his tricks.

[Don Alejandro gets to his feet.  Esteban's brother lunges at him with his sword.  Don Alejandro parries with his saber and the two men duel.  Don Alejandro turns the brother's sword aside as Esteban finally removes his sword from the post.]

Victoria [cringing]
Zorro!  Behind you!

[Esteban lunges at Don Alejandro but he moves out of the way and Esteban jabs his brother in the right thigh.]

Brother [as he grabs his leg]
Aaah!

[Don Alejandro steps in between the two brothers, deflects Esteban's sword then grabs Esteban's right wrist.]

Don Alejandro
Hoisted by your own petard, gentlemen.

[Exterior shot of the plaza where several lancers led by de Soto and Mendoza march toward the tavern.]

de Soto [pointing to his right]
Right flank.

[Two lancers run off to their right.]

de Soto [pointing in front of him]
You two guard by the door.

[Two more lancers run forward.]

de Soto [pointing to his left]
You two, form a line!

[He waves his hand.  People are gathering around in front of the tavern as Diego rides under an archway and into the plaza.]

Diego
Alcalde! [He rides toward de Soto.] What's going on?

de Soto [waving his hand dismissively]
Not now, Diego.

Mendoza [pointing toward the tavern]
The brothers Esteban, they're inside.

[Diego comes over and puts his hand on Mendoza's right arm.]

Diego
The brothers Esteban?  Then it's not. . . [He looks toward the tavern.] Where's Victoria?

Mendoza
Señorita Escalante's also inside.

Diego [starting toward the tavern]
The brothers Esteban are ruthless cutthroats. . .

de Soto [grabbing Diego's left arm]
Diego, this isn't a surprise party, it's an ambush.  [He pushes Diego backward.] Please stand clear!

[He turns toward the tavern.  Esteban comes rolling out the front door.  He gets up to his knees, then to his feet, then turns and faces the tavern.  He has a ‘Z' slashed into the seat of his trousers.  Esteban falls face down onto the ground.  People start laughing.]

de Soto [excitedly]
Zorro!  He's inside!  And he's surrounded!  What luck!  Lancers!

[He rushes toward the tavern followed by the lancers, the townspeople, and Diego.]

[Interior shot of the tavern where Don Alejandro has his saber against the younger Esteban brother's chest as Victoria stands next to the brother.  De Soto, Mendoza, and the other lancers enter the tavern and surround Don Alejandro.]

de Soto
El Zorro. [He reaches out and grabs the blade of Don Alejandro's saber and pulls it away.] At last it ends.  The moment I've been waiting for. . .  The moment that I've dreamed of since I. . . [He takes the hat from Don Alejandro's head.] came to this pueblo de Los Angeles.

[Diego is now standing to Victoria's right, looking very nervous.]

de Soto
And now everyone shall see the face beneath the mask.

[He lifts up Don Alejandro's mask then pulls it off his head.  People gasp.]

Mendoza
Don Alejandro!  Can't be!

[Victoria faints and Diego catches her while looking anxiously over at Don Alejandro.]

Mendoza
We've seen Zorro many times.  We've stood right next to him and Don Alejandro's been right beside us.

de Soto
It's a testament to his cleverness, Sergeant.  The man is a master of deceit. [Don Alejandro stand defiantly.]  He wears the mask.  He wears the cape and he interferes where he is not wanted.  And now, I've got him.  I've won. [He raises his fist into the air.] I've caught Zorro!

Don Alejandro [unimpressed]
Do your worst. . .  Oh ye of the woeful countenance.

[Diego look worried as he hold up the still unconscious Victoria.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Interior shot of the cuartel jail.  Don Alejandro is in one cell and the brother Esteban are in the other.  Don Alejandro is seated while the brothers are standing and grasping their cell bars.]

de Soto [off camera at first]
You didn't fool me, de la Vega.  I knew it was you.

[He, Mendoza, and several lancers stand outside the bars.]

Mendoza [incredulously]
You did, Alcalde?

[De Soto starts to nod then turns his head in Mendoza's direction.]

de Soto
I want a guard on this cell twenty-four hours, Sergeant.

Mendoza
Muy bien, Alcalde.

[He and de Soto start to leave.]

Esteban [waving his hand through the bars]
Hey!  Hey!  Hey!  Hey!

[De Soto and Mendoza stop and look at him.]

Esteban
What about us?

de Soto
What about you?

Esteban
Don't you have another cell somewhere?

Esteban's Brother
Yes!  Solitary confinement or something?

de Soto [incredulously]
You're asking for solitary confinement?  Why?

Esteban's Brother [indicating Don Alejandro]
Well, it's him.  He never stops.

Esteban [as Don Alejandro smiles]
He goes on and on all about glory, and chivalry, and the quest!  It's torture!

de Soto
Torture?

[Esteban nods.]

de Soto
That's good.

[Esteban frowns.]

de Soto [nodding]
That's good.

[He walks away.  Mendoza stares at Don Alejandro.]

Mendoza
I'm so sorry, Don Alejandro.

Don Alejandro [focusing on Mendoza]
Sancho Panza.  My squire!

[He stands up and goes over to the bars in front of Mendoza.]

Don Alejandro
I knew you could never be in league [He looks over his shoulder at the Esteban brothers.] with these wicked rogues.  I was thinking.  We should escape tonight, after nightfall.  Don't you agree?

Mendoza
Yes.  I mean no!  Don Alejandro, what is the matter? [He lowers his voice.] You're not really Zorro, are your?

Don Alejandro [smiling mysteriously]
You should know better than anyone, Sancho.

Mendoza
Sancho?  Why do you keep calling me Sancho?  My. . .my name is Jaime.

Don Alejandro
Jaime?  Yes, of course.  Jaime! [He lowers his voice.] What a disguise.  Pure genius. [He raises his voice.]  Yes, never fear, Jaime! [He lowers his voice again.] My lips are sealed. [He makes a ‘Z' in the air with his right index finger then touches the finger to his lips.] Shh. . .

Mendoza [nodding but obviously confused]
Gracias.

[He walks away.  Don Alejandro watches him go then turns suddenly to face the Esteban brothers.]

Don Alejandro
Rat catchers!

[He goes over to their cell and they back away in fright.]

[Exterior shot of the inside of the cuartel where two soldiers are hanging a rope from a beam on the gallows that is being constructed.  Diego stands near the gallows base.]

Diego [turning and walking closer to the gallows]
Alcalde, you cannot actually believe my father is Zorro.

de Soto [climbing out from under the gallows platform]
I realize it's difficult to accept. . .

Diego
Be objective for a moment.  Now, we've both seen Zorro.  He's a much younger man. . .  Agile. . .  Powerful. . .  Taller. . .

[He looks like he might have said too much.]

de Soto
An illusion.  You see, Diego, you people have idolized Zorro to the point you assign him qualities he doesn't have.  I see him for what he really is. . .a common criminal.  I'm not blinded by romantic illusions.

Diego [a bit angrily]
My father's life is not an illusion.  It has been an exemplary one dedicated to public service.  To execute such a man would be a crime!

de Soto
I agree.  I agree.  Don Alejandro de la Vega is a model citizen.  I suggest you think of this as not his execution, but as Zorro's.

[The trap door of the gallows swings open loudly.  Diego jumps back, then he stares at de Soto.]

Diego [as he walks toward de Soto]
My father is a much loved and respected man in this community.  The people will not stand for this.

de Soto [mockingly]
Oh, please.  Diego, you realized that common rabble love to see nothing more than a man of wealth and property dangling from the end of a rope.

Diego
Then why is this to be a closed execution behind locked gates?

de Soto
Well, you know, passions about Zorro run very high in this town. [A padre wearing a brown hooded robe comes up behind de Soto then goes up the gallows steps.] I cannot afford to have a riot on my hands.

[Diego watches as the padre goes up the steps.  De Soto chuckles then follows the padre up the steps.  Diego has a worried expression on his face.]

[Exterior night shot of a barred window in the cuartel jail.]

Don Alejandro [singing off camera at first]
‘Walls do not a prison make. . .'

[Interior shot of the cuartel jail where the Esteban brothers stand in their cell, clutching the bars as Don Alejandro stands by his cell's window.]

Don Alejandro [singing]
‘Nor iron bars a cage. . .'

Esteban
Stop!  Please!
Don Alejandro [singing]
‘Nor iron bars a cage. . .'

Esteban
Shut him up!  Shut him up!

[The door leading into the jail opens then Victoria and Mendoza enter the room.]

Don Alejandro [as Victoria comes around to the door of his cell]
Señorita. . .

Victoria
Don Alejandro, why were you in the tavern dressed as Zorro?

Don Alejandro
To look at your radiance is to be rejuvenated by the sun itself.

Victoria [smiling at the flattery]
Well, thank you. [She then shakes her head.] Wait a minute.  There must be some terrible mistake here.

Don Alejandro
Oh, yes, of course.  There's a horrible mistake.  I was captured.  I beg your forgiveness, your highness.

Victoria [a bit annoyed]
Don Alejandro, now listen to me.  Soon it will be dawn. . .

Esteban
And thank goodness!

Victoria
And unless something is done, you will hang.

Don Alejandro
This troubles you, does it?

Victoria
Troubles me?  Troubles me? [She looks over at Mendoza then back at Don Alejandro.] Of course it troubles me.

Don Alejandro [reaching out through the bars]
Then I curse them doubly for placing one crease upon milady's brow.  Upon my oath, they shall pay dearly.

[Victoria looks at him oddly.  Mendoza loudly blows his nose into a red handkerchief.]

Mendoza [sounding tearful]
So romantic.

Victoria [looking confused]
Uh. . .

Don Alejandro
Do not worry, Señorita.  Do not worry.  Soon you and I will be reunited. [He kisses her hand.] Ah, my beloved Dulcinea.

[He puts his finger to this lips, then points at Mendoza, then to his right eye.  He then walks away.]

Victoria [a bit dreamily]
Dulcinea. [She then looks at Mendoza, then Don Alejandro then Mendoza again.] Isn't that his horse?

Mendoza [crying]
I think so.

[He cries into his handkerchief as the Esteban brothers look confused.]

Victoria [rolling her eyes]
Uh. . .

[Exterior shot of the outside of the cuartel.   People are running up to the gates and pounding on them.]

Voices
Free Zorro!  Free Zorro!  Free Zorro!

[Exterior shot of the inside of the cuartel where de Soto and Mendoza stand on the gallows platform.]

de Soto [pointing to his right]
Oh, how predictable.

Mendoza [as he and de Soto descend the steps]
Alcalde, the entire pueblo's at the gates!

de Soto
I'm not deaf, Sergeant!  Now do you see how Zorro has infected the entire town with. . .his spirit of anarchy?

Mendoza [waving his hand]
Si, Alcalde.  Very dangerous.

de Soto
Oh, you have no idea, Sergeant. [He either accidentally or on purpose hits Mendoza in the chest, knocking Mendoza backward.] This is the way political parties are born.

[The gate is bowing inward as lancers aim their muskets at it.]

Voices [off camera]
Free Zorro!

[Exterior shot of outside the cuartel gate.  Victoria stands behind the crowd then turns around, obviously searching for someone or something.]

Voices
Free Zorro!  Free Zorro!

[Exterior shot of inside the cuartel as Don Alejandro is being lead to the gallows by a lancer who is followed by more lancers as a drum is beat.  A padre in a brown robe with the hood pulled up onto his head is at the end of the line.]

[Closeup shot of the Esteban brothers as they look out their cell window.]

Esteban
I have to admit, he's a brave fellow.

[Shot from the Esteban brothers's point of view as they watch Don Alejandro reaches the gallows platform.]

[Exterior shot of the inside of the cuartel where a lancer is putting the noose around Don Alejandro's neck then tightening the knot.]

de Soto [standing on the platform]
By the way, your son sends his regrets.  He doesn't wish to see his father hang.  A coward to the last.

Don Alejandro
Diego de la Vega will avenge my death.  Son of Zorro, he can do no less.

de Soto
I'm sorry, Señor, but your son couldn't avenge a mild stomachache.

[He pulls out a white handkerchief from his jacket and holds it up into the air.]

[Closeup of the Esteban brothers's cell window.]

Esteban [shaking his fist through the bars]
Release Zorro!

Esteban's Brother
Release Zorro!

[Exterior shot of the outside of the cuartel gate where people are beating on it and waving their fists in the air.]

[Exterior shot of the inside of the cuartel where the gate is bowing inward.  It suddenly bursts open and people pour into the cuartel.  They rush the lancers who fire shots into the air.  Victoria runs into the cuartel but is held back by a lancer blocking her with his musket.]

de Soto [still holding the handkerchief in the air]
You know, it's at a time like this, I expect. . .Zorro to ride in and save the day.  Well, expectation are one thing and reality is quite another, hmm?

[He raises the handkerchief even higher as the drum is beat rapidly.  He drop the handkerchief and a lancer pulls on the trap door lever.  The hooded padre slips a dagger from his robe's sleeve and cuts the rope right above the noose.  The trap door falls open and Don Alejandro falls through it.  Mendoza jumps back, then he and another lancer fall backward off the gallows platform.]

Mendoza and the Other Lancer
Aaaah!

[Mendoza lands atop the other lancer.  Don Alejandro lies motionless under the gallows at the people murmur excitedly.]

de Soto [incredulously]
Padre, what did you do?

[The padre flips back his hood and reveals that he is actually Zorro.  The people start cheering.]

Voices
It's Zorro!  It's the real Zorro!

Zorro
Alcalde, what crime is Don Alejandro guilty of?

de Soto [confused]
What crime?  He's Zorro.

Zorro
How can he be Zorro when Zorro stands before you?

de Soto
It's a trick!

Zorro
No, Alcalde, no tricks.  There's nothing up my sleeve. [He brings up his right arm and looks down into the robe sleeve then does a double take.] Look at that!  There is.

[He holds out his arm toward de Soto who leans forward to look inside the sleeve.  Zorro's right fist shoots out of the sleeve and punches de Soto in the face.  De Soto crashes through the gallows' railing and lands on top of Mendoza and the other lancer who are still on the ground.]

de Soto [as he falls]
Aah!

[Several lancers start up the gallows' steps but the brown robe lands on top of them.  Zorro then kicks at them and they all fall down in a heap.  Zorro swings down off the gallows and goes under them to where Don Alejandro is still lying.  He picks up Don Alejandro as the Esteban brothers watch in amazement.  Zorro carries Don Alejandro through the open cuartel gate past Victoria, who follows them.  Zorro puts Don Alejandro across Toronado's back as Victoria stops and watches.  Zorro turns and gives her a salute before hopping onto Toronado's back and riding away as the people cheer.]

[Closeup of the Esteban brothers at their cell window,]

Esteban
I'll won't be able to tell my grandchildren I fought with the real Zorro.

[Exterior shot of Zorro riding out of the pueblo.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Exterior shot of de Soto's office as lancer stands outside of it.]

de Soto [off camera at first]
How could I have failed so badly?

[Interior shot of de Soto's office .  De Soto is seated behind his desk, leaning his head into his hand as Mendoza stands to his right holding an ice bag.]

Mendoza
I said it all along.  Don Alejandro could not possibly be Zorro.

[He place the ice bag on de Soto's left cheek.]

de Soto
Aah! [He grabs the ice bag away from Mendoza.] Sergeant.  Well, it was some sort of conspiracy cooked up by Zorro to. . .to pin his crimes on one of the town's leading citizens.

Mendoza
Zorro did save Don Alejandro's life.

de Soto
Ah, it was a trick. . .to ingratiate himself with the mob.

Mendoza
Well, but Alcalde, doesn't the second trick cancel out the first trick?

de Soto
That's the genius of it, Sergeant.  I don't expect you to grasp the subtlety.

Mendoza
Exactly.  I said it all along.  Don Alejandro could not possibly be Zorro.

[He chuckles smugly.]

de Soto
Get out of here, Sergeant.

Mendoza [looking at him]
Hmm?

de Soto [angrily]
Get out!

Mendoza
Si, Alcalde.

[He turns to his right and leaves.  De Soto covers his eyes then uncovers them as he holds the ice bag to his left cheek.]

[Exterior shot of the de la Vega hacienda.]

[Interior shot of Victoria and Diego standing by the front door.]

Victoria
Are you sure Don Alejandro is all right?

Diego
Oh, yes.  Zorro left him here none the worse for wear.  But you know, Victoria, I think my father will be a bit embarrassed by all of this.  Perhaps we should spread the word throughout the pueblo to put all this behind us and not mention it again.  I think he'd appreciate it.

Victoria [smiling]
I think that's an excellent idea.  Well, I'd better be going for now.  Adios.

Diego
Adios.

[Victoria exits through the door.  Diego waves before closing the door.  He turns and walks into the library where Don Alejandro is sleeping in the same chair he had been sitting in before his little escapade.  Diego looks at him worriedly, holding his palms together in front of his mouth.  He sighs.  He reaches down and gets a book then sits down in a chair across from Don Alejandro.  Diego opens his book and starts reading.  Don Alejandro wakes up and stares over at Diego.]

Don Alejandro
Zorro.

[Diego looks up from his book, a stunned look on his face.]

Diego
I beg your pardon, Father.

Don Alejandro
I had a dream, Diego, and I dreamt. . .dreamt that I was Zorro.  Imagine that, me, Zorro.

[He chuckles and Diego joins in.]

Diego [smiling nervously]
Imagine that.

Don Alejandro
It was so real, Diego.  It was so real.  Diego . . .?

Diego
Yes?

Don Alejandro
You don't suppose there could actually be a little bit of Zorro in me, do you?

Diego
It's hard to say, Father.  But you know, even a man like Zorro needs inspiration.

Don Alejandro
What do you mean, son?

Diego
Oh, I don't know.  I think there might be something of you in Zorro.

[Don Alejandro smiles at that thought and picks up his book.  Diego looks over at him and smiles too before going back to his own book.  Then he looks at Don Alejandro again and smiles.]
