1. HEINRICH JOSEPH ‘HENRY' LEVERMANN was born 20 Aug 1829 in Westphalia Prussia (Germany) probably near Balve and died 30 Jul 1896 in Alton Sioux Co Iowa. He is buried at St Mary's Cemetery Alton Iowa. He married MARIANNE ADOLPHINA LUEBKE 24 Jan 1854 in Balve Westphalia Prussia. She was christened 27 Jan 1839 in Balve Westphalia Prussia and died by May 1894 in Germany. She was the daughter of ANTON LUEBKE & MARIA CATHARINA ELISABETH KOENIG (See LUEBKE for more information).

There was a Henricus (Latin for Heinrich or Henry) Levermann who was baptized 16 Dec 1831 in Balve Westphalia Prussia, the son of JOES WILHELM LEVERMANN & THERESIA ARNDTS/ARENS. If this are Heinrich's parents, he also had a brother named JOANNES CASPARUS (John Casper) LEVERMANN and a sister SOPHIA LEVERMANN. This would make sense because Heinrich named one of his sons Johann Wilhelm and had a daughter Sophia. The records of St Mary's Catholic Church in Alton Iowa show that Henry Levermann was born in 1831 and died 30 Jun 1896. These facts would contradict his obituary which states he was 67 years old at the time of his death and that his obit ran in the 1 Aug edition of the local newspaper, mentioning he had died Thursday of that week.

Heinrich came to the United States in 1894 presumably after the death of his wife Marianne to live with his sons Anton & Frank in Iowa.

Death of Henry Levermann
Thursday evening of this week (30 Jul 1896), Henry Levermann died from Lung fever at the home of his son Frank of this city. He had suffered from the disease for nine weeks and the best of medical aid and careful nursing proved unavailing. Mr Levermann was born in Westphalen Germany 67 years ago and came to America in May of 1894. Three children, Frank and Antone of this city and one son in Germany survive him. The funeral will be held in this city from the Catholic Church Saturday morning at 9 o'clock. He was a member of St Joseph's Catholic Church and was a kindly benevolent old gentleman who made many warm friends during his short life in this city. The relatives have the sympathy of all.

2. FRANZ ANTON GEORG LEVERMANN was born 12 Jun 1858 in Fruhlinghausen Westphalia Prussia and died 7 Jan 1936 in Aumsville Marion Co Oregon. He married MARIA ELISABETH ‘MARY' HENKE 5 Mar 1886 in Alton Sioux Co Iowa. She was born 12 Apr 1857 in Beringhausen Westphalia Prussia and died 12 Feb 1929 in Aumsville Marion Co Oregon. She was the daughter of JOHANN JOSEPH HENKE & CATHARINA ELISABETH GROTHE (see HENKE for more information). Anton & Mary are both buried at St Boniface Cemetery Sublimity Marion Co Oregon.

Anton was baptized 13 Jun 1858 in Balve Westphalia Prussia. He followed his younger brother Frank to America in 1883. He crossed the Atlantic in the ship ‘Rhein' which departed from Bremen Germany and arriving 2 Jun 1883. He traveled in steerage.

Anton first lived in Wisconsin, staying there for about a year. He then moved to Alton Iowa where his brother lived. He worked as a carpenter and a farmer there for 13 years before moving his family out to Oregon by train. There he settled near Salem about a mile east of Aumsville where he had a 100 acre dairy farm. In 1958 the property was condemned by Marion County so a road to the cemetery could be built. The house was moved and still is being used as a residence. The old barn also still stands and is scheduled for renovations.

3. FRANZ ANTON ‘FRANK' LEVERMANN was born about 1861-62 in Westphalia Prussia and died in 1941 in Texas probably near McAllen. He married ANNA MARY HILDESHEIM by 1891. She was born in 1866 in Wisconsin and died in 1947 in Texas also probably near McAllen. Her parents are unknown.

Frank came to America before his older brother Anton who arrived in 1883. Frank had settled in the Alton Iowa area where he worked as a liquor wholesaler and carpenter. By 1913 he had moved his family to Texas. He served as postmaster at the Alton Hidalgo Co Texas post office from 3 Sep 1913 until 15 Jun1917. On 9 Jun 1915 the office's name was changed from Alton to Oblate.

4. HENRY J LEVERMAN was born 13 Dec 1886 in Alton Sioux Co Iowa and died 13 Feb 1948 in Portland Multnomah Co Oregon. He is buried at Mt Calvary Cemetery Portland Oregon. He married IRENE MCKERCHER. She was born 20 Oct 1896 in Butte, Silver Bow Co Montana and died 18 Sep 1984 in Portland Multnomah Co Oregon. Her parents were PETER ALEXANDER MCKERCHER & EMMA C HARRINGTON.

The 1920 census shows Henry as a bookkeeper at an auto plant. He is 37, single, and is a lodger at 576 Elliott Ave, Portland, Oregon.  The 1930 census shows Henry, now married, and the owner of the apartment building they are living in at 549 Ladd Ave., Portland, Oregon.

There is a Leverman Street in northeast Portland in the Swan Island Industrial area. Overlooking this is the University of Portland neighborhood where Henry and his family lived. It is likely that this street was named in his honor in 1981.

NOTE:  All of Anton Levermann's children dropped the second ‘n' from their surname.

Lynn was a registered nurse who served during WWI, enlisting 29 Mar 1918. She was stationed in France at Base Hospitals # 46 & 3. She was ordered to Germany and was at the hospital in Treves with the Army of Occupation. She was discharged 10 Aug 1919. She received some of her training in Baker City Oregon

7. MATILDA JOSEPHA ‘TILLY' LEVERMAN was born 13 Aug 1893 in Alton Sioux Co Iowa and died Jan 1979 in Richland Benton Co Washington. She married DR WILLIAM RAYMOND ‘RAY' BERNARD SR 1 Sep 1919 in Multnomah Co Oregon. He was born 2 Jan 1894 and died Jan 1979 in Richland Benton Co Washington. His parents are unknown.

Tilly attended the State Normal School in Cheney Washington and was a teacher before her marriage to Ray. He was a dentist and practiced for many years in the Cheney area.

Tony inherited his father's farm and ran it until 1958 when it was condemned by the county. He moved his family to a farm near Brooks Oregon. He died of a heart attack at age 66.
