Fighter's Cousin Dies

Funeral Today at Mineral for Benjamin Scott, Pioneer.

Mineral, April 29 - Funeral rites were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon for Benjamin Franklin Scott, 81, retired farmer and pioneer who died Saturday afternoon at his home here.  He had been ill for a year.  Burial was in McCune cemetery.

Mr Scott was a second cousin of the late Gen. Winfield Scott, hero of the Mexican and Indian Wars (no connection has been established as yet).  The Mineral man was born at LaSalle, Ill, in 1843; he came to Kansas in 1872 and for the past 63 years had lived in the Mineral-McCune vicinity.

Survivors include the widow, Mrs Lucy Scott; three sons, Ellis Scott and John Scott, both of Neosho, Mo, and Fred Scott of Sherman, Kansas; three daughters, Mrs May Bottellio of Kansas City, Mrs Fred Hodson of Kansas City and Mrs Pearl Frye of Tebo (should be Gebo), Wyo; nineteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Heart Disease Fatal to Long Time Resident Here

S D Scott, well known Columbus man, died suddenly at his rooming house, 101 West Sycamore Street at 6 o'clock this morning. Mr Scott suffered an attack of heart disease at 3 o'clock in the morning and lived only three hours. He was 67 years, 11 months and 27 days old.

Mr Scott was born in Arlington Illinois, May 19, 1861 and came to this county with his mother when he was twelve years old, locating near Cokedale, six miles northwest of Columbus.
In 1880, Mr Scott married Martha Ann Allen, who died March 22, 1920. They were the parents of eight children who still survive: Mrs Letha Richards of Columbus, Mrs Rilla Purklizer of Sarasota Fla, Mrs Edith Wiles of Joplin, Mrs Violet Scott of Pittsburg, Clark Scott of south of Faulkner, Amos Scott of Alamo Tex, Vernal and Jesse Scott of Columbus, rural routes. He is also survived by five grandchildren.

Mr Scott lived on the old homeplace near Cokedale from 1873 until 1921 when he purchased the rooming house on North Kansas Avenue where he lived continuously until his death this morning.

Mr Scott has had interests in Texas and has been financially interested in the Columbus Garment Manufacturing Company since 1921. His health has not been good for some time but his death this morning resulted from a sudden attack of heart disease and was unexpected.

The body is at the Jones-Ruhland undertaking company. No funeral arrangements have been made.

She was the daughter of ABSALOM W ‘APP' KEITH & SARAH JANE SIZEMORE and sister of Stella Keith (see above).

After Ellis and Minnie were married, they ran a boarding house and lunch counter. They sold the business about 1910 after losing everything in the Florida land boom scandal and moved to Alabama until 1918 then came back to SE Kansas-SW Missouri area.
