[Exterior shot of the church.]

[Interior shot of the church as Victoria feeds a spoonful of something to a boy lying on a bed.]

Victoria [when the boy won't open his mouth]
Come on, my angel.

Padre Benitez [walking up to the bed and sitting down in a chair]
I've sent a messenger, but it will be at least a week before Doctor Hernandez returns from Monterey.

Victoria
Well, he's getting weaker by the hour.

Padre Benitez
Come, Sergio. [He takes the bowl and spoon from Victoria.] Now you must not offend Señorita Escalante by refusing her renowned albondigas soup.

[He holds the spoon up to Sergio's mouth.]

Victoria
Come on, Sergio.  You must eat.  Come on.  Just a little.

[She takes the bowl and spoon from Padre Benitez and drips a spoonful of the soup into Sergio's mouth.]

Victoria [smiling]
That's a boy.

Padre Benitez [chuckling]
Señorita, you have such a way with children.

Victoria
Well, how can I not?  Especially with children who never had a mother nor a father.

Padre Benitez
But you are so kind and so beautiful.  You know, it pains me that you do not marry and have many fine babies of your own.

Victoria
But choosing a husband is not like buying livestock, Padre.  Besides Zorro and I have made a promise to each other.

Padre Benitez
I hope he lives long enough to keep his pledge.

[Gunshots are heard off camera.  Both Victoria and Padre Benitez react.]

Padre Benitez
That was close.

[He stands up as does Victoria.  She goes over to a window.]

[Exterior shot of the pueblo gate as three men run under, firing their pistols at Zorro who comes riding up on Toronado, twirling his whip over his head.]

[Exterior shot of the mission window as Padre Benitez comes up behind Victoria.]

Victoria
It's Zorro!

[Exterior shot of the pueblo as the three bandits hide behind things and shoot at Zorro.  Zorro rides up to one of them, still twirling his whip.  A lancer sees Zorro then runs into de Soto's office.  Zorro coils his whip around the barrel of bandit's musket and yanks it from his hands.]

[Exterior shot of the mission window as Sergio comes up between Padre Benitez and Victoria.]

[Exterior shot of the pueblo as Zorro continues to twirl in whip over his head.  He then coils it around the sword hilt of a second bandit.]

Bandit [as he drops the sword]
Aah!

[Zorro lashes out with his whip, coiling it around the neck of the third bandit and yanks him into the second bandit.  They both fall to the ground.  The first bandit tries to run away but Zorro coils his whip around the bandit's ankles.  The bandit trips and falls on his face.]

[Exterior shot of the mission window as Padre Benitez, Sergio, and Victoria look out.]

Sergio
Zorro!

[Zorro turns and looks to his right then turns Toronado in the same direction.]

Sergio
I knew you would come.

[Closeup shot of several pairs of booted feet as they run.]

[Exterior shot of the cuartel yard as five lancers run across it to the cuartel gate.]

[Exterior shot of the pueblo as Zorro looks to his left and sees lancers running out into the plaza.]

Lancers
There he is!

[Zorro spins Toronado around and starts riding away.  The lancers stop, raise their muskets then fire.]

[Exterior shot of the mission window as Padre Benitez, Sergio, and Victoria watch.]

Sergio
Zorro!

[Exterior shot of the countryside as Zorro rides Toronado out of town.]

[Exterior shot of the pueblo as the lancers go over and pull the bandits to their feet.]

[Exterior shot of the mission window.]

Sergio [kind of dazed looking]
It's all right.  He will come back.  And I will ride with him.

[Padre Benitez and Victoria look at Sergio in confusion.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Exterior shot of the tavern as people mill about in front of it.]

Diego [off camera]
Wise choice, Alcalde.

[Interior shot of the tavern as Victoria sets a bowl in front of de Soto who is seated at a table, reading a book.  Diego sits to de Soto's left, eating from a bowl.  Victoria tosses de Soto's spoon onto his table.]

Diego
Señorita Escalante's albondigas soup. . .

[Diego goes to put his spoon in his bowl but Victoria walks by and takes it away.]

Diego [looking confused]
. . .is the finest in the territory.

de Soto [setting aside his book and turning to Diego]
Well, I've always considered ordering to be an art.  Don't you agree, Diego?  Understanding an establishments strengths. . . [He looks down at his bowl of soup.] and its, um, uh. . .  Señorita! [He looks around the room to where Victoria is serving another customer.] Señorita!  Señorita Escalante!

[She comes up behind him, carrying a tray.]

de Soto
I ordered carne asada.

Victoria [belligerently]
So you don't like my soup?

de Soto [holding up his bowl with both hands]
Well, if I wanted albondigas soup, I certainly would have ordered albondigas soup.

Victoria [clearly upset]
You know, you should be grateful you can eat at all.  Some people are too sick to eat.

de Soto
Well, uh, that's their problem, isn't it?

Victoria
It should be everyone's problem.

[She walks away, kicking a stool with her foot as she passes by Diego's table.  De Soto sets his bowl back down on his table.  Diego, still holding his spoon, looks in Victoria's direction, then wipes his mouth with his napkin, picks up his glass of orange juice and stands up then goes over to the bar.  Victoria is behind the bar, taking things off her tray.]

Diego [in a low voice]
Before you drive away all your customers, why don't you tell me what's the matter?

Victoria
It's nothing. . .  Nothing that Zorro can't fix.

[De Soto looks in their direction, obviously interested in their conversation.]

Victoria
It's just that right now I'm concerned about a young boy at the mission.  Sergio's so ill with fever that he cannot eat.  And the little that he does eat, he sustains no energy, no nourishment.  But this morning outside the mission, when he saw Zorro, he arose out of bed and spoke for the first time in two days.  He thought that Zorro had come to take him for a ride.

Diego [a bit puzzled]
Why would he think that?

Victoria [smiling]
He's a young boy.  They have their fantasies.

Diego
Does Sergio still believe that Zorro will come?

Victoria
Oh, yes.  He still hasn't lost faith, even though each day may be his last.

[De Soto stares down at his soup as he listens.]

Victoria
Padre Benitez and I are hoping that Zorro will learn of his plight.  So we're telling everybody.

Diego [as he brings his glass of orange juice to his mouth]
Then I'm sure Zorro will hear.

[He takes a sip.]

Victoria
Maybe.  But he's so unpredictable. [De Soto stands up, pulls off his napkin, and picks up his book.] Every time I think he's going to show up, he doesn't appear.  And [Diego looks at de Soto suspiciously.] when he does, it's a total surprise. [in an angry voice] Diego, are you listening to me?

Diego [turning to look at Victoria]
Yes.  Yes, of course.

Victoria
Well, I'm just praying that word will somehow reach Zorro.

[Diego looks again in the direction de Soto took.]

[Interior shot of de Soto's office as de Soto buttons up his uniform jacket while he sings to himself.  Mendoza, carrying his hat, enters the office behind de Soto.]

de Soto [as Mendoza comes up beside him]
Well, is everything ready, Sergeant?

Mendoza [grudgingly]
Si, Alcalde.

de Soto
Cheer up, Sergeant.  We are on the verge of greatness.

Mendoza
Si, Alcalde, it would be great to capture Zorro. [De Soto brushes off his epaulets.] But every time we try, something dreadful always happens.  And even if we did capture him, who. . .  Who would we chase then, huh?

de Soto
How philosophical, Sergeant.

[He turns then goes over and sits down behind his desk.]

Mendoza
Alcalde, the boy is dying.  All he wants to do is to ride with his hero.

de Soto [scornfully]
Hero?  I'd say the boy's devotion is sorely misplaced, Sergeant.  Have you considered that among the many accolades that will be showered upon me for capturing Zorro, at least a few are going to trickle down to my trusted and loyal sergeant?  I think a promotion will be in order and, uh, a substantial raise in pay, hmm?

Mendoza
Alcalde, even if Zorro does come to visit little Sergio, that would only show that he is sensitive, caring.  That is no way to capture him!

de Soto
It is the perfect way, Sergeant. [He opens his desk drawer and takes out a book then throws it at Mendoza.]  Read your Machiavelli!  Sensitivity and caring are not signs of strength and wisdom, they're flaws that have been the downfall of many a man.  And Zorro. . .is going to pay dearly for such weakness.

Mendoza
Alcalde, wh-who is this Machiavelli?

[De Soto slams his desk drawer shut then puts his face in his right hand.]

[Interior shot of the secret cave as Diego picks up a large red bound book as Felipe looks on.]

Diego [as he sits down behind his desk]
This may have all the answers we need.  Lettres de Toxicologie.  By the great French physician Orfila. [He thumbs through the book.]  A magnificent collection of the latest scientific knowledge; the cures of certain illnesses, fevers, and maladies.  Now, Victoria said the boy had a fever but more importantly she also said he was unable to retain nourishment.

[Felipe touches Diego's left arm then points to his left then rakes his hands over his face then cups his hands, then he clasps his hands together and holds them out to Diego.]

Diego
Yes, Sergio may be the perfect bait to capture Zorro.  The Alcalde was most interested in my conversation with Victoria.

[Felipe touches Diego's left arm again, points at Diego, then shakes his right index finger at Diego then holds both hands up in the air to his left.]

Diego [chuckling]
Well, what would you rather I do, Felipe?  Stay here, sit by the fire, read a good book, hmm? [Felipe shakes his head.] I didn't think so.  Besides, I have no intention of granting a dying wish.  I will go so that Sergio may live.  And I will bring him here so we may study his condition and hopefully find a cure.

[Felipe makes a ‘Z' in the air with his right index finger.]

Diego
Zorro. . .

[He stands up.]

[Exterior shot of the countryside as Zorro rides Toronado up a hillside.]

[Exterior shot of the outskirts of the pueblo as two lancers walk behind the church.  Zorro and Toronado look out from behind a bush.  The two lancers walk along the side of the church.  A loud whinny is heard off camera.  Both lancers turn around as Toronado whinnies again and stamps one of his front hoofs from behind the church.]

Lancer 1
Is that Zorro's horse?

Lancer 2
I don't know.

[They run toward the back of the church.  Zorro runs to his right, where the lancers had just been standing.  The lancers raise their muskets but Toronado runs through the pueblo gate and out into the countryside.  The lancers shrug their shoulders and turn around, walking back alongside the church.  Zorro climbs across the church's roof then climbs down the opposite side and slides down into a window near the ground.]

[Interior shot of the mission as Zorro lands on the floor with a thud.  He walks slowly down a hallway then turns a corner.  De Soto, Mendoza, and several other lancers stand in front of a door.]

de Soto [clapping]
Very good.  Bravo.  I knew you'd come. . . [Zorro glares as de Soto.] because the heart of Zorro is the heart of a fool.

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Interior shot of the mission as de Soto, Mendoza, and the lancers face Zorro.]

Zorro
You should be ashamed, Alcalde.  Using a sick boy to bait your little trap.

de Soto
Ah, well, you know what they say, ‘all's fair in love and war', hmm?

Zorro [tipping his head]
Then you shall have your war.

de Soto
Arrest him!

[The lancers move forward as Zorro bends down and picks up the edge of the rug they are standing on.  He yanks on it and the lancers stumble backward.  Zorro unsheathes his saber.]

de Soto [off camera]
Get up and get him!  Take him!

[A lancer gets up and lunges at Zorro with his sword.  Their swords clash once then Zorro grabs the lancer by the neck and shoves him into the wall.  A second lancer raises his sword at Zorro, who parries it then kicks the lancer in the stomach.  A third lancer lunges at Zorro with his sword and they fence for a bit until Zorro punches the side of his head.  Padre Benitez looks out from behind a door and beckons Zorro.  Zorro comes forward, kicking the closest lancer in the chest.  Another lancer runs at Zorro, who slams the door into the lancer's face.  Zorro goes through the door and shuts it.]

[Interior shot of a mission bedroom where Zorro locks the door then goes over to where Sergio is lying on a bed.]

Sergio [as Zorro kneels beside the bed]
Zorro, you came.  You will take me for a ride?

Zorro
Yes, amigo, we'll ride together.

[Lancers are beating on the door and shouting as Zorro picks up Sergio and turns to Padre Benitez.]

Zorro [holding Sergio in his arms]
I must look after the boy.

[De Soto, Mendoza, and the lancers break open the door.]

de Soto
I'm afraid that won't be possible, Zorro.  There's no escape this time.

Zorro
Then go ahead, arrest me.  A brave man like you shouldn't be afraid of a lingering disease, followed by a violent and painful end.

[De Soto takes a step backward, looking scared.]

Zorro
Don't tell me the brave hunter is afraid of his own bait.

[Padre Benitez looks at Zorro and smiles.]

de Soto
No, no.  Surely you and the padre wouldn't condemn yourselves to death.  You're bluffing.

Padre Benitez [turning to de Soto]
Only in death is there salvation, my son.

Zorro
As for me, a child's life is worth the risk. [De Soto puts a handkerchief over his nose and mouth.] I wonder if you are willing to take the same chance for my capture?

de Soto
We've wasted enough time here. [He backs away from the door.] Take over, Sergeant!

Mendoza
But, Alcalde. . .

de Soto
Sergeant, what do you want, a silver platter?  Do it!

Zorro [as de Soto walks off to his right, leaving a scared looking Mendoza]
Come ahead, Sergeant, arrest me.  But I'm afraid your moment of glory with be an uncomfortable and short-lived one.  First, a stinging of the eyes. [Mendoza blinks then covers his eyes.] Then tightness of the collar.  [Mendoza puts his hands to his throat and unbuttons the top button of his tunic.] Then worst of all, the sudden and complete loss of appetite.

Mendoza
Madre de Dios.  I don't feel so good.

Padre Benitez [totally straight-faced]
Oh, dear, another victim.

[Zorro tips his head, trying not to smile.]

Padre Benitez [turning to Mendoza]
Sergeant, do you prefer the long or the short mass?

Mendoza
Santa Maria!  Let them through! [He turns to the lancers and starts waving his arms.] Let them go!  Let them go!  Get out of the way!  Get out of the way! [Zorro carries Sergio through the door.] Let them out!

Zorro
Adios, Sergeant.

[Mendoza staggers into the room, coughing and gasping as Padre Benitez follows Zorro and Sergio.]

Mendoza
Perhaps this is a better way to go.  Better than facing the Alcalde.

[He sinks down to the floor, holding his throat and making choking sounds.]

[Interior shot of the secret cave as Felipe wipes Sergio's forehead with a white cloth as Zorro looks on.  Sergio opens his eyes.]

Sergio
Zorro. . .

Zorro
Drink, amigo.

[He lifts Sergio's head up off his pillow as he puts a bowl of a yellowish liquid to Sergio's mouth]

Zorro
Soon you will ride with me and in good health.

[He sets Sergio's head back down on the pillow then looks up and Felipe who shakes his head.]

Zorro
I know, Felipe.  Sergio must not die.  But if our concoction works, it will help his body to fight the disease.  I'll return every three hours to administer the solution.

[Felipe smiles then touches his chest then puts his hand on his mouth.]

Zorro
No, Felipe, I must do it. [Felipe looks at him questioningly.] Felipe, you cannot be seen.  Sergio must never realize where he is.

[Zorro holds up his right index finger.  Felipe looks down and wipes Sergio's forehead again.]

[Interior night shot of the pueblo as a coyote howls.]

[Interior shot of de Soto's office as de Soto stands behind his desk.]

de Soto [irritatedly]
Sergeant, you do understand why you should be trembling with fear right now, don't you?

Mendoza [standing at attention in front of de Soto's desk]
Si, mi Alcalde.  I'm in a lot of trouble because in the last three days, I've been unable to find Zorro or the boy.

de Soto
Yes, and you do realized why finding the boy is very important to your well-being, Sergeant, don't you?

Mendoza [not quite hiding a smile]
Si, mi Alcalde, because the boy will know of Zorro's hideout.  Thus redeeming me from allowing myself to be duped by Zorro and thus, uh, meaning you will not put me in the stocks and subject me to public ridicule.

[He starts laughing.]

de Soto
Well, Sergeant, a man in your position with even half a brain will be showing extremely concern at this moment.  But you stand there, with a silly smirk on your face.

Mendoza [smiling and laughing]
Alcalde, I cannot help myself.  The padre told me I'm as fit as a bull!  I'm going to live!

[He continues to laugh.  De Soto steps up to Mendoza with a menacing expression then grabs Mendoza's upper arms.]

de Soto [through clenched teeth]
That remains to be seen, Sergeant.  Find.  The.  Boy!

Mendoza [nodding]
Si, mi Alcalde.

[He goes off to his right.  De Soto sits on his desk, shaking his head as the door closes off camera.  He then looks upward and shakes his hands in the air.]

[Interior shot of the secret cave where Felipe hold up two test tubes fill with green liquid.  Sergio is lying on a cot behind him and starts to stir.  Felipe puts the tubes into a holder then turns and walks past Sergio's cot as Sergio faces the other way.  Felipe bumps into something, making a loud noise.  He jumps to Sergio's left as Sergio turns to his right.  Felipe starts backing out of the cave then hurries up the steps and disappears through the archway.  Sergio gets up off the cot and wanders over to the laboratory tables.]

Sergio
I must still be dreaming.

Zorro [off camera at first]
It's no dream, amigo.

[Sergio turns around and Zorro walks up to him, putting his right hand on Sergio's right shoulder.]

Zorro
The fever is gone. [He puts his thumb by Sergio's right eye.] Your eyes are clear.  I think you've won this battle.

Sergio
Thank you, Zorro.

Zorro
Oh, I have no need of thanks.  It was your faith that brought you here.  And you must use that faith as your strength.  It will be your weapon in battles.

Sergio
But in your battles, you use a real sword.

Zorro
Oh, a sword is merely a piece of steel.  It's the heart and the mind of the one who wields it that wins the battle.

Sergio
Maybe you will teach me?

Zorro
You have my word. [He pats Sergio's shoulder.] For now, we must find you a comfortable place to recover.

Sergio
I'll stay here with you.  I don't eat much.  The padre says I'm a very hard worker.

Zorro
Think of Señorita Escalante's disappointment if she couldn't see you through your recovery, hmm?

Sergio [not very enthusiastically]
I suppose so.

Zorro
There are many people who care about you, amigo.  Before we ride, [He picks up a long white cloth.] I must make certain you don't see where we are.

[He holds up the cloth to Sergio's face but Sergio grabs Zorro's wrists.]

Sergio
I won't tell.  I promise.

Zorro
I know.  But for your own safety, you must be blindfolded.  Knowledge of my whereabouts is too dangerous a burden. . .for any man. [Sergio lets go of Zorro's wrists.] Good boy.

[He puts the blindfold over Sergio's eyes and ties it on the back of his head.]

[Interior shot of the tavern where de Soto sits at a table, eating.  Padre Benitez comes out of a doorway to the right of the bar and hides something behind his cassock when he sees de Soto sitting at the table.]

Padre Benitez [as he walk past de Soto]
Buenas noches, Señor.

[He makes his way over to the stairs, trying to keep a brown pouch out of view.  Victoria comes out of the same door the padre did.  De Soto clears his throat as she passes his table and she spins around, hiding another brown pouch behind her back.]

Victoria [nodding]
Alcalde.

[She backs away from de Soto, going toward the stairs.  De Soto sets down his glass, pulls off his napkin then stands up and goes over by a pillar.  Victoria and Padre Benitez are leading Sergio to a green door by the staircase.]

de Soto
Yes. . . [Padre Benitez, Victoria, and Sergio all turn to face de Soto.] A very good evening indeed.

[He waves mockingly at them.]

[Exterior day shot of de Soto's office.]

[Interior shot of the cuartel jail as de Soto and Mendoza stand outside a cell containing Sergio.  Mendoza's head and hands are in the stocks.  De Soto pushes Mendoza up against the cell bars.]

Mendoza
Oof!

[De Soto then grabs Sergio's left wrist and pulls him up against the bars.]

de Soto
Now look at the sergeant!  See how foolish he looks?  Now imagine yourself out in the middle of the plaza on public view looking just as foolish!

Sergio
I told you, I don't know where Zorro's cave is.

[De Soto growls then lets go of Sergio.  He then takes the stocks off Mendoza.]

Mendoza
Aah! Aah!

de Soto
Come on, Sergeant.  [He tosses the stock aside.] Come here, Sergeant.

[He walks off to his left to the door of Sergio's cell.  Mendoza follows.  De Soto then unlocks the cell door then pushes it open and steps inside the cell.  Sergio jumps back.]

de Soto
Bring me the whip, Sergeant.

Mendoza
Si, Alcalde.

[He goes behind de Soto.]

de Soto
The mere sight of it has been known to make grown men tremble, shake with fear.  Hasn't it, Sergeant?

Mendoza [appearing at de Soto's right.]
Si, mi Alcalde. Look at me, I'm trembling.  Please, Alcalde, there is no need to demonstrate.

de Soto [taking the whip from Mendoza]
Yes, Sergeant.  There's a need.

[He snaps the whip at the cell floor.  Sergio flinches.]

de Soto [coming up and grabbing Sergio's right ear]
Now you tell me.  Tell me.  Where is Zorro hiding?

Sergio
Even if I knew, you couldn't make me tell.  Not while I have the weapon Zorro gave me.

[De Soto immediately releases Sergio's ear and jumps back away from him, pushing Mendoza up against the wall.]

de Soto [panicky]
Weapon?  What weapon?

Sergio
My faith.

de Soto
Ha!

Zorro [off camera at first]
I, on the other hand. . .

[Zorro jumps down from the rafters, landing on the floor feet first.  He smiles as he raises his saber.]

Zorro
. . .have only my sword.  And though not as powerful as my young friend's weapon, it does have its moments.

[He beckons to de Soto as Sergio looks on eagerly.  De Soto drops his whip and draws out his sword.  He runs out of the cell and goes over to face Zorro.  They begin to duel.]

Mendoza [as he puts his hands over his face]
Ooh!

[Zorro and de Soto continue to fence.  Zorro drives de Soto backward then pins him up against a wall.]

Zorro
Fortunately, I made certain not to reveal my hiding place to this brave young man.

[He moves away from de Soto then punches de Soto in the face, which spins him around.  Zorro grabs de Soto by the back of his neck and tosses him into an open cell.]

de Soto [as he crashes into something off camera]
Aah!

Zorro
Fortunately for you, you didn't lay a hand on him.

[De Soto is face down on the floor, breathing heavily.]

Zorro
Sergeant. . .

Mendoza [coming forward]
Si.

[He walks with his back against the wall past Zorro and into the cell with de Soto.  Mendoza closes the cell door.]

Mendoza [smiling nervously]
Thank you, Zorro.

[Zorro hands the keys to Sergio and Sergio locks the cell door.  He hands the keys back to Zorro.]

Mendoza [to the now standing de Soto]
You see, Alcalde.  I told you.  Something dreadful always happens.

de Soto [stepping up to the door]
Lancers!

[Zorro and Sergio walk away.  Zorro tosses the key into the other cell as he passes by it.]

de Soto
Lancers! [He bumps his face onto the bars.] Aah!

[He touches his hand to his face.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Exterior shot of the pueblo as a cart pulled by one horse comes into the plaza.  Victoria is driving the cart and Sergio is her passenger.]

Victoria [stopping the cart in front of the church]
Whoa!

[Padre Benitez walks up to the cart.  Sergio stands up and kisses Victoria on the cheek.]

Victoria
Oh, well thank you, Sergio.

Sergio
And your albondigas soup is the best in the world.

[Victoria hugs him.]

Padre Benitez [chuckling]
Sergio, you are not yet old enough to start capturing the hearts of beautiful women.

[A horse whinnies loudly off camera.  Padre Benitez, Victoria, and Sergio all turn around as Zorro rides up beside the cart on Toronado.]

Padre Benitez
Zorro!

Zorro
Señorita.  Padre.

Victoria
What are you doing here?

Zorro
Well, I've come to take Sergio for his ride.  This time with his health intact and his blindfold off.

[He helps Sergio from the cart and pulls him over to sit in front of him on Toronado's saddle.]

Padre Benitez
Zorro, you honor the boy beyond his dream.

Zorro
No, Padre.  When a man shows such brave loyalty to his friends, the honor of riding with that man is mine.

[He salutes Padre Benitez and Victoria then turns Toronado around.  He and Sergio ride through the pueblo as people cheer.  Victoria sighs.]

Padre Benitez
Sometime, daughter, the heart is a cruel master.

Victoria
But a master nonetheless.

[She sighs again.]

[Exterior shot of the countryside as Zorro and Sergio ride Toronado off into the sunset.]
