First US Airdate 17 October 1992   Episode 4.2

[Exterior shot of the pueblo which is nearly deserted.  A man sits against a pillar, snoring.  Another man drives a wagon through the plaza.]

[Exterior shot of the tavern as Victoria carries a tray to a table on the left side of the tavern porch where a man in a brown suit sits and eats.]

[Closeup shot of Mendoza and Sepulveda who are also sitting on a table on the opposite side of the porch as Victoria comes over to them.  Victoria put a piece of yellow paper down on the table in front of Mendoza.]

Victoria
Gracias, Señores.

Mendoza [picking up the paper]
What is this?

Victoria
Your bill.

Mendoza [incredulously]
Bill?  But this is me, Sergeant Mendoza.

Victoria
And this is me, Victoria Escalante.  No more credit.  You lancers are going to put me in the poorhouse.

Mendoza [sounding pitiful]
Señorita Escalante, do you have any idea what it is like to live off garrison rations?

[Victoria looks at Mendoza then at Sepulveda.  Mendoza looks up at her with puppy dog eyes.]

Victoria [taking the bill from Mendoza]
All right.  But this is the last time.

[She walks away.  Mendoza and Sepulveda try to keep from laughing.]

[Exterior shot of the tavern porch as Victoria walks back over to the man in brown suit.]

Victoria
We will be closing soon for siesta, Señor.

[The man, his mouth full of food, nods as Victoria picks up a pitcher.  She then looks off over to her right.]

[Closeup shot of a sword blade drawing a ‘Z' in the dust.]

[Exterior shot of the tavern porch as Victoria sets down the pitcher and walks off to her right.]

[Closeup shot of Victoria as she steps off the porch.]

Victoria
Zorro.

[She steps over to her left and Zorro takes her by her hands. They lean against the side of the building.]

Victoria
Is anything wrong?

Zorro [shaking his head]
Everything is perfect.

Victoria
Then why are you here?

Zorro
Well. . .  I've already had my lunch.

Victoria
Hmm. . .  You mean you came just to see me?

Zorro [nodding]
Mm-hmm.  And for this. . .

[He leans down and kisses her.]

[Exterior shot of the tavern porch where the man in the brown suit is still eating.]

[Closeup shot of Mendoza and Sepulveda as Mendoza yawns and taps Sepulveda on the arm.]

Mendoza
Come on, Private.  Let's go.

[They stand up, carrying their hats.]

[Closeup shot of the man in the brown suit as he looks over to his left.]

[Closeup shot of Victoria and Zorro against the wall of the tavern.]

Victoria [looking slightly annoyed]
Although I still have one customer left. [She holds up her hand then steps around to Zorro's left.] Excuse me while I get rid of him.  Then, um. . .I'm all yours.

Zorro
What an enchanting prospect. [He kisses her hand.] I forgot something.  I'll be back.

[He jumps upward (onto the balcony, I guess) as Victoria watches.]

[Exterior shot of the tavern porch as Victoria walks around the corner of the building with a big smile on her face.  The smile disappears as she stops and sees the empty tables.]

Victoria
But where did he go? [She puts her hands on her hips.] He left without paying his bill.

[She looks around the plaza.]

Victoria [as she walks forward]
Ah!  He's robbing the poor box!

[Exterior shot of church where the man in the brown suit is trying to pry open the poor box.]

[Closeup shot of Victoria as she watches.]

Victoria
Zorro. [She turns to look over her right shoulder then turns back.] No, I can't.

[She starts walking forward.]

[Closeup shot of de Soto's office's front door as loud snoring is heard off camera.]

[Interior shot of de Soto's office as de Soto sits in the chair behind his desk, asleep but mumbling to himself.]

de Soto
Oh, no, it was easy, your Majesty. . .  Capturing Zorro, but. . .

[Closeup shot of Victoria as she knocks on the cuartel gates.]

Victoria
Mendoza.

[Closeup shot of a window of de Soto's office.]

de Soto [off camera]
Yes. . .  Yes for the people. . .

[Closeup shot of de Soto as he starts to wake up as knocking is heard off camera.]

Victoria [off camera]
Sepulveda!

de Soto [as he wakes up]
Uh. . . [He slides forward in his chair.] Oh. . .

Victoria [off camera]
Open up!

[De Soto starts to stand up.]

Victoria [off camera]
Mendoza!

[Exterior shot of the pueblo as Zorro stands underneath an archway, holding a bouquet of flowers.]

Victoria [off camera]
Open up!

[Closeup shot of the man in the brown suit as he continues to pry open the poor box.]

[Closeup shot of the cuartel gates as sleepy Sepulveda opens them up.  Victoria is looking off to her left then turns to look at Sepulveda.]

Sepulveda
Señorita, it's siesta.

Victoria
Yes, and while you two are dozing, someone is robbing the mission poor box!

[Exterior shot of the church as the thief continues to pry open the poor box.  Zorro walks up behind, still holding the flowers.  Zorro then sits against a short pillar to the left of the church.]

[Closeup shot of Victoria and Sepulveda at the cuartel gates.]

Sepulveda [as he turns to go inside the gates]
Santa Maria!  Lancer Mendoza!  It's Zorro!

[Victoria does a double take.]

Victoria
Oh, no!  What have I done?

[Exterior shot of the church as Zorro sits ans watches the thief wrangle with the poor box.]

Zorro
You know, it's been said the poor will always be with us. [He looks down at the flowers he is holding.] Why are you making their lives more difficult than they already are, hmm?

[Closeup shot of the thief as he slowly turns around, holding out a knife in his right hand and a white pouch in his left.]

[Closeup shot of Victoria as she looks on worriedly.]

Victoria
Oh, Zorro.

[Interior shot of the cuartel yard as several lancers run out of a doorway, buttoning their uniforms.]

Lancers
Get him!

[Closeup shot of Victoria as she reaches out and closes the gate.]

[Exterior shot of the church as the thief comes at Zorro, who calmly stands up then grabs the thief by the back of his head and smashes his forehead onto the pillar.  The thief staggers around then lands face down on the ground in front of the church.  Zorro turns and throws the thief's knife and it lands somewhere off camera.]

[Closeup shot of black booted feet running.]

[Closeup shot of Victoria as she picks up a piece of wood and stares to put it across the cuartel gates.]

[Exterior shot of the cuartel yard as Mendoza and the lancers run up to the gate.]

[Closeup shot of Victoria as she pushes the bar into place.]

[Exterior shot of the cuartel yard as the lancers pound on the gate.]

Mendoza
Unlock the gate!

[Exterior shot of the church as Zorro bends over the thief and takes the white pouch.  He goes over the poor box and starts to put the pouch inside it.]

[Closeup shot of a telescope as it pokes through a narrow opening between two doors.]

de Soto [off camera]
Zorro!

[Shot from the point of view of de Soto's telescope of Zorro putting the money back into the poor box then locking it up.]

de Soto [off camera]
Stealing from the poor box.

[Exterior shot of de Soto's office as de Soto steps through the front door and onto the porch, holding the telescope in his hands.]

de Soto
How low can a man sink?  Well, he won't get away with it this time, will he?

[He kisses the telescope.]

[Closeup shot of Victoria as she runs away from the cuartel gate.]

Mendoza [off camera as the pounding on the gate continues]
Let us out!

Victoria
Zorro!

[Closeup shot of Mendoza and the lancers pounding on the gates.]

Mendoza [to Sepulveda]
Just like a woman.  First she hollers thief, then the next minute she locks us in.  Quick!  The Alcalde's office.

[He runs off to his left.]

[Exterior shot of the church as Zorro steps over the unconscious thief.  Victoria runs up to him and he hides the flowers behind his back.]

Victoria
Zorro, I'm so sorry.  If I'd known you were still here, I wouldn't have sounded off the alarm.  Now I guess I've ruined the whole afternoon.

Zorro
No. . . [He looks over at the thief.] This thief has ruined our afternoon.

[Interior shot of de Soto's office as Mendoza and the lancers burst inside.]

Mendoza
Alcalde, I hate to disturbed you. . .

[He stops and looks around the empty office.]

Lancers
He's not here!

Mendoza [as he runs to his left]
Alcalde!

[Closeup shot of Zorro and Victoria in front of the church.]

Zorro [looking over Victoria's left shoulder]
I'd better be going.

[He turns his head to his right and whistles.]

[Exterior shot of the pueblo as Toronado runs under an archway, whinnying loudly.]

[Closeup shot of Zorro and Victoria.]

Zorro
Until next time.

[He holds out the flowers to her then kisses her cheek.  He dashes off to his right.  Victoria looks disappointed.]

[Exterior shot of de Soto's office as Mendoza and the other lancers run out the front door.]

Lancers [as they come to a stop]
There he is!

Mendoza
Zorro!

[Closeup shot of Zorro swinging up onto Toronado's back.  He starts to ride away, saluting mockingly at the lancers.]

[Exterior shot of the plaza as Mendoza and the lancers run across it.  Zorro rides Toronado out of sight.  Two lancers stop and fire their muskets in his direction.]

[Exterior shot of the countryside as Zorro rides Toronado across the open landscape.  The camera pans over to where de Soto is sitting on a white horse looking through his telescope.]

de Soto [putting away the telescope]
This time, Señor Fox, you will not evade the hounds.

[He clicks with his tongues then rides forward.]

[Exterior shot of the countryside as de Soto rides through some trees before coming to a halt.  He reaches for his telescope.]

[Closeup shot of Zorro and Toronado partially hidden behind a tree.]

Zorro [voiceover]
The Alcalde apparently thinks he's going to track us to the cave.  Let's take him on a scenic tour.

[Closeup shot of de Soto as he brings the telescope up to his right eye.  He sits forward on his horse.]

de Soto
Oh, my friend. . .

[Shot from de Soto's telescope's point of view of Zorro and Toronado riding past some bushes.]

de Soto [off camera]
I have you know.

[Closeup shot of de Soto putting away his telescope, picking up his horse's reins, then riding forward.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Exterior shot of the tavern as Don Alejandro sits at a table on the porch.  Mendoza stands to Don Alejandro's left as another lancer sits at Mendoza's left.  Four other men stand behind Mendoza.  A woman sits to Don Alejandro's left.]

Mendoza
Don Alejandro, the mission bandit and myself, eye to eye, his sword just about. . .

[Closeup shot of Victoria.]

Victoria [angrily]
He didn't have a sword.

[Exterior shot of the tavern porch as Mendoza and the others look in Victoria's direction.]

Mendoza
Well, his knife. . .

Victoria
He didn't have a knife either.  And it was Zorro who stood eye to eye with him, not you.

[She turns and goes inside the tavern.]

Mendoza [looking at Don Alejandro]
Details, details.  The important thing is that Ortiz is in jail.

[He points to his right.]

Don Alejandro
What's important is that the mission poor box is intact.  Right, Sergeant?

Mendoza
This true, Don Alejandro.  Very true.

Sepulveda [off camera at first]
Sergeant! [He comes up to Mendoza's table.] No sign of him anywhere, Sergeant.

Mendoza
Well, that is very strange.  The Alcalde was having a siesta.  He left very strict orders not to be disturbed and then he disappears.

[He looks over at Don Alejandro who shrugs.]

[Closeup shot of de Soto as he rides his horse past a tree with objects dangling from it.]

de Soto
Move, you worthless beast.  We can't lose him now.

[He rides down a hillside.]

[Closeup shot of a bush that is parted and the faces of two Indians look through the opening.]

[Exterior shot of the countryside as de Soto sits astride his horse then brings the telescope up to his right eye.]

[Shot from de Soto's telescope's point of view as it moves from right to left, seeing only rocks and trees.]

Zorro [off camera]
Over here, Alcalde.

[The telescope moves sharply to the right to where Zorro sits astride Toronado.]

[Closeup shot of de Soto looking through the telescope.]

de Soto
How did you get over there?  I followed every inch of the way with this.

[He holds up the telescope.]

[Exterior shot of the countryside as Zorro and Toronado are near the bottom of the hill ]

Zorro
Ah, about a mile back, you should have turned left at the big oak.

[Closeup shot of the two Indians looking through the bush then letting it close back up.]

Zorro [off camera]
Now you're in danger.

[Closeup shot of de Soto with a smirk on his face.]

de Soto
I'm in danger?  You're the one who's running.

[Closeup shot of Zorro and Toronado.]

Zorro
You're the one standing on sacred Indian burial grounds.

[Closeup shot of de Soto.]

de Soto
Indian burial grounds?  So what?  We have treaties with these savages.

[Closeup shot of Zorro and Toronado.]

Zorro
Alcalde. . .  Heed my warning.

[Closeup shot of de Soto sneering.]

Zorro [off camera]
And leave now before it's too late.

[Closeup shot of Zorro and Toronado.]

Zorro
Ride back to the pueblo.

[Closeup shot of a bush as a faint hooting is heard and the bush rustles.]

[Closeup shot of de Soto as a dove's coo is heard.  He looks over his left shoulder.]

[Exterior shot of the burial grounds.  A bird screeches off camera.  De Soto turns and looks back in Zorro's direction.]

[Exterior shot of the countryside where there is just rocks and trees where Zorro and Toronado had been.]

[Closeup shot of de Soto gathering up his horse's reins and turning the horse around, riding through the burial grounds.  Two Indians with spears jump out in front of him.]

Indians
Hyah!

[De Soto spins his horse around and rides off to his left.  More Indians jump out into his way, pointing spears at him.  His horse rear and de Soto falls off backward, landing on his back on the ground.  The Indians surround him, pointing their spears at him as he tries to get up.  He reaches out and accidentally pulls an animal skin off one of the burial pyre.  He falls back again as bones fall down on him.  The Indians gasp in horror.  De Soto pushes the bones off of himself.  One of the Indians pokes his spear toward de Soto.]

Indian [angrily]
You trespass on sacred ground.  You broke our law.

de Soto [still struggling on the ground]
Ah, for which I'm exceedingly sorry.  But if you intend to lay even a few on me. . .

[The Indian stabs his spear into the ground next to de Soto's head.  De Soto stares open mouthed as the Indian bends down and picks up de Soto's telescope.]

Indian
You looked into the souls of our ancestors.

de Soto [chuckling]
No, no, no. . .  I assure you. . .

[The Indian flings the telescope into the air.  It goes over a pile of rocks.]

de Soto [off camera]
Not my new telescope!  I just bought it!  Noooo!

[Closeup shot of the telescope as it hits on a rock, breaking into several pieces.]

de Soto [as the Indians pull up him off the ground]
What are you doing?  Take your hands off me!

Indian
You must answer to Chief Wise Eagle.

[The other Indians drag him away.]

de Soto
Hey!  Hey!

[An Indian leads de Soto's horse as he follows the others.]

[Exterior shot of an Indian village as the Indians enter.  De Soto's wrists are bound together by a rope whose other end is being held by the Indian riding his horse.  The Indians come to a halt.]

de Soto
When my lancers hear about this, I assure you, they'll destroy your miserable little village.

[The Indian dismounts and walks up to de Soto.]

de Soto
I demand to see your leader at once.

[The Indian grabs de Soto's arm.]

Indian
This is Wise Eagle's tent.

[He indicates at tent to his left.]

de Soto [defiantly]
Good.  Maybe I can talk some sense into him.  I've always had trouble with. . .

[He looks over and sees another Indian holding Toronado's reins.]

de Soto [as the Indian pulls on the ropes around his wrists]
Zorro's horse.

[Zorro and an old Indian, presumably Wise Eagle, emerge from the tent.]

Zorro [to de Soto]
I did warn you, Alcalde.

de Soto
So, you're in league with this savages.

Zorro
No.  I came to plead for your life.  Wise Eagle insists that you've broken their laws.

de Soto
Tell the old fo. . .  Tell Wise Eagle that I happen to be an official of the King's government.

Indian
A government that does not keep its promises to our people.

Zorro
True.  The government is frequently guilty of injustice.  But if this man is harmed, then Spanish law will have been broken, and many soldiers will come to avenge him.  It will mean war.

Indian
So our laws are not important and the white man's laws are sacred?  He must answer for his crimes against our ancestors.

[Wise Eagle nods.  The Indian turns as the others close in with their spears.]

Indian
Prepare the trial by fire.

de Soto [worriedly]
Do something, Zorro.

Zorro
Angry Eyes, you cannot burn him.

Angry Eyes
If he is innocent, he will not feel the pain.  If he is guilty, he will die.

de Soto [sarcastically]
Oh splendid.

Zorro
This is no way to decide a man's guilt or innocence.

Angry Eyes
This is our way, Zorro.  You stand on our ground and he must face our justice.

[De Soto looks ill.]

Zorro
If you call that justice. . .  Then I shall face it.

Angry Eyes
You would do that to save your enemy?

Zorro
I would do it to prove there is a better way to enforce the law.  A better way to find the truth.

[Wise Eagle raises his right hand and swipes it across his eyes then hits his left hand onto his right forearm.]

Angry Eyes
You take the journey down the river of pain.  If you survive, your alcalde is free to go.

[Angry Eyes and Wise Eagle lead Zorro and de Soto over to where two lines of Indians face each other, all of them holding sticks and angry, eager expression.]

Zorro [turning to de Soto]
You'll owe me one for this.

[He takes off his sword belt and hands it to a girl standing to his left, then takes a step forward.  The Indians start beating him with their sticks.  Zorro stumbles as he makes his way down between the lines.  Wise Eagle and Angry Eyes look on and nod.  Zorro falls to the ground at the end of the lines.  His shirt is torn, his mouth is bleeding, and blood drips out from under his mask from his right ear.  Angry Eyes steps forward and thrusts two poles into the ground in front of Zorro's head.  Zorro uses them to get to his feet.  He tries to catch his breath as Angry Eyes pokes his left arm with the end of one of the poles.]

Zorro
Aah! [He looks over at Angry Eyes.] I don't understand.  I thought. . .

Angry Eyes
You have the power of courage.  Let us see if you have the skill.

[He hits Zorro again with his pole.  Zorro fights back, parrying every thrust then poking Angry Eyes in the ribs with the end of his pole.]

de Soto [watching the fight]
Be careful, Zorro!  He's very quick!

[The fight continues as Zorro jumps over a low swipe of the pole by Angry Eyes.  Zorro uses his pole to vault out of the way.  Angry Eyes holds out his pole in front of himself as the other Indians cheer.  Zorro charges up to Angry Eyes and presses his pole against Angry Eye's.]

Zorro
There are many kinds of power, amigo.  One of them is staying power.

[He pushes his pole upward, knocking Angry Eyes back a few steps.  They then engage in a quick flurry of maneuvers.  Zorro hits Angry Eyes in the chest and Angry Eyes staggers back for a moment then charges at Zorro who sidesteps out of the way then kicks Angry Eyes in the bottom as he passes by.  Angry Eyes spins back around and they engage in another quick series of maneuvers.  Then Zorro hits Angry Eyes's chin with his pole then hits him again in the face.  Angry falls backward into the crowd, knocking down several Indians.  De Soto looks on, impressed.  Zorro goes over to Angry Eyes and helps him to this feet.]

Zorro
I've made the journey down the river of pain.  Release the Alcalde.

Angry Eyes
The journey doesn't end here.  It ends on the wall of death.

[Zorro looks concerned.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Exterior shot of the tavern as people mill about in front of it.]

[Closeup shot of Mendoza as he slurps two spoonfuls of soup.]

Mendoza [looking up and smiling]
Mm. . .  It's amazing what hot soup will do for an ailing man.

Victoria [looking down at Mendoza]
Mendoza, you're not ailing, you're just stalling.  And if I were in your boots, I would be out there looking for the Alcalde.  Who knows, he could have been kidnapped or something.

Mendoza
Actually I was just thinking about organizing a patrol.  I think I will do it now.

[He slurps another spoonful of soup.  Victoria rolls her eyes and turns away.]

[Exterior shot of steep rock cliff (The Cliff of Insanity!)]

Angry Eyes [off camera]
The wall of death is the ultimate test of a warrior.

[Closeup shot of Zorro nodding.]

Angry Eyes [off camera]
Climb it, and you will be denied nothing.

[Zorro turns and looks at Angry Eyes.]

Angry Eyes
Many men have tried to reach the top and many men have died.

[Exterior shot of the Indian village as de Soto hangs upside down over a smoky fire.]

[Exterior shot of the base of the cliff as Zorro nods and walks toward the cliff.  The Indians stand at the base of the cliff, watching as Zorro starts climbing it.

[Closeup shot of the upside down de Soto as he shakes his hands.]

[Exterior shot of the cliff as Zorro climbs up it.]

[Closeup shot of the upside down de Soto.]

[Shot from de Soto's point of view of an upside down Zorro climbing the cliff.]

[Closeup shot of the upside down de Soto.  The camera pans over to show the girl Zorro gave his sword belt to earlier as she watches nervously.]

[Closeup shot of Zorro climbing the cliff.  He suddenly slides downward several feet before grabbing onto a branch growing out of the cliff.  He struggles to regain his footing.]

[Closeup shot of the girl as she puts her hands on her heart then sighing with relief.]

[Closeup shot of Zorro's lower half as he regains his footing and starts climbing again.]

[Closeup shot of the upside down de Soto wiggling and shaking himself.  A knife slides out of the top of his left boot.  He catches the knife with his bound hands and starts cutting through the ropes.]

[Exterior shot of the base of the cliff as all the Indians watch as Zorro climbs the cliff.]

[Closeup shot of de Soto untying his hands then reaching up and untying his feet.]

[Exterior shot of the cliff as Zorro keeps climbing upward.]

[Closeup shot of de Soto, now hanging upright, as he swings the rope forward then jumps down.]

[Shot from de Soto's point of view of all the Indians' back to him.]

[Closeup shot of de Soto as he sneaks away from the fire then grabbing the girl around the throat with his left arm and holding the knife up to her throat with his right.]

Girl
Aaah!

[Closeup shots of Wise Eagle, Angry Eyes, and some of the other Indians as they turn around.]

Voice [off camera]
Let her go!

[Closeup shot of de Soto and the girl.]

de Soto
Bring me my horse.

[He tightens his grip on the girl.]

[Closeup shot of Zorro as he turns and looks down over his right shoulder.]

[Shot from Zorro's point of view of the people at the bottom of the cliff.]

de Soto [off camera]
Better do as I say!

[Closeup shot of Zorro as he reaches above his head and grabs onto a loose rock.  He tosses it over his shoulder.]

de Soto [off camera]
Get the horse now!

[Closeup shot of de Soto and the girl as the rock hits de Soto on the head.  He lets go of the girl as he falls backward.]

Girl [as she stumbles forward]
Aah!

[Closeup shot of Zorro as he continues on his climb up the wall of death.]

[Exterior shot of the cliff as Zorro climbs.]

[Closeup shots of Zorro as he keeps climbing up the wall.]

[Exterior shot of the top of the cliff as Zorro appears just below it.  He pulls himself up and stands a the top, out of breath.  A horse snorts off camera.  Zorro turns around and sees Mendoza and several other lancers ride up on horseback.  He turns back the other way and whistles.]

[Shot from Zorro's point of view of the bottom of the cliff as Toronado whinnies.]

[Exterior shot of Zorro at the top of the cliff.]

Zorro
Sergeant, you're just in time.

Mendoza [off camera at first]
We are? [He sits on a brown horse as the head of the line of lancers.] I mean, of course we are.

[Zorro walks up to Mendoza and takes a coil of rope off of Mendoza's saddle then turns toward the edge of the cliff.]

Mendoza
Time for what?

Zorro [as he walks away]
To give me this saddle rope.

[He tosses one end of it over the edge of cliff then ties the remaining end to a limb on a nearby bush.  Mendoza dismounts.]

Mendoza
What for?

Zorro
To save the Alcalde's miserable life.

Mendoza [as the other lancers dismount]
Ah, so that's where he's at.

[Zorro secures the rope to the bush then grabs it as he walks to the edge of the cliff.]

Mendoza [stepping forward]
Be careful, that's my best rope!

Zorro [looping it over his right shoulder]
Good.  This is no time for shoddy equipment.

[He salutes then hops down backward off the edge of the cliff.]

Mendoza [running forward]
Zorro!  [He and another lancers run up to the edge of the cliff.] Wait a minute!  I'm supposed to arrest you!

[Shot from Mendoza's point of view of the bottom of the cliff.]

Mendoza [off camera]
Madre de Dios.  I don't like heights.

[Closeup shot as Mendoza as he looks down, teetering on the edge of the cliff as the other lancers grabs onto him.]

[Exterior shot of the cliff as Zorro rappels down it.]

[Closeup shot of Toronado running through rocks.]

[Exterior shot of the cliff as Zorro continues to rappel down it.]

[Closeup shot of Zorro as he rappels downward, finally landing in the saddle on Toronado's back.  He turns Toronado back around.]

[Exterior shot of the Indian village as several Indians tie up de Soto again.]

de Soto [struggling]
Zorro!  Please!

Zorro [as he rides up on Toronado]
I advise you to let the Alcalde go. [Angry Eyes looks at him.] Sergeant Mendoza and his lancers will be here shortly.

Angry Eyes [pointing at de Soto]
He was going to kill Washdea.

Voice
Yeah!  Yeah!

de Soto [still struggling]
I wasn't going to hurt the girl, I promise you.  I just refuse to be roasted over some open fire like a chestnut.

Zorro
Are we not men of honor?  Men of our word?

Angry Eyes [nodding]
Yes.  When you made the wall of death the wall of life. [He looks over at de Soto.] Release him!

de Soto [still struggling]
Release me!

[The Indians untie his wrists.  Zorro starts to turn away.]

de Soto [off camera]
And I want my horse back!

Zorro [shaking his head]
Don't push your luck, Alcalde.  You can ride back to town with Sergeant Mendoza.  He'll be here shortly.  Wise Eagle. . . [He raises his right hand.] Adios.

[Wise Eagle raises his right hand.  Zorro salutes then starts to ride away.  Washdea looks on disappointedly.  Angry Eyes turns to look at Zorro.]

Angry Eyes
Wait!

[Zorro brings Toronado to a halt but doesn't look back.]

Angry Eyes
You forgot something.

Zorro [turning around]
I did?  What might that be?

[Closeup shot of a giggling Washdea.]

Angry Eyes [off camera]
This is Washdea, Wise Eagle's daughter.  You won her.  She's yours.

[A giggling Washdea looks adoringly at Zorro.]

Zorro [nervously]
Ahh. . .

[He starts to say something but is obviously at a loss for words.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Closeup shot of Angry Eyes and Zorro as they walk.]

Angry Eyes
When you climbed the wall of life, you won the hand of Wise Eagle's only daughter.

Zorro
That's very kind.  It's just that I have no desire to marry.

Angry Eyes
She'll give you many children.

Zorro [laughing nervously]
Oh, I'm sure she would.

Angry Eyes
Then it's settled.  You'll take her.

[Washdea looks on anxiously.]

Zorro
The truth is. . .  Um. . .  It's an overwhelming offer. . .

Angry Eyes
To refuse it would be an insult to all my people.

Zorro
What I'm trying to say is. . .um. . .  My people have certain traditions.  Besides, this really shows a woman no respect.

Angry Eyes
Ah, but you must respect our traditions.

[Washdea comes up to Zorro and touches his right arm.]

Washdea
You find me unattractive?

Zorro [nervously]
Uh. . .  Oh. . .  No, no, not in the least.  You're the most attractive, lovely. . .  Oh, what am I saying?  Alcalde. . .

[He chuckles nervously.]

de Soto
What can I say?  You don't want to climb the wall of death again, do you?  I deal in the affairs of state, Zorro, not the affairs of the heart.  You're on your own.

Zorro [sarcastically]
Thanks for your support. [He turns to Washdea and takes her hands.] You see, I'm in love with the most charming woman in all of California, that is excluding yourself, Señorita Washdea.

Angry Eyes
But Zorro, you are a man who deserves many wives.

[De Soto walks up to Zorro, Washdea, and Angry Eyes.]

de Soto [disgustedly]
You are such a hero.

[He walks past Zorro.]

Zorro
Look. . . [He lets go of Washdea's hands.] I'm a reasonable man and you. . . [He points at Angry Eyes.] You're a man too.  We, you and me, we're both men and um. . . [He puts his hand on Washdea's shoulders.]  Señorita Washdea is. . .is lovely. [He turns away.] What I'm trying to say is. . . [He starts walking toward Toronado.] Is that my people believe in that, um, a man and a woman should get to know each other very well before they become permanently attached. . .  And, um, this process. . .

[Zorro slowly backs away.  A lancer passes in front of him, leading a horse.]

de Soto [off camera]
Mendoza, get over here.

[More lancers lead horses past Zorro, obscuring him from view.]

Zorro [off camera]
This process of engagement. . .

Mendoza [off camera]
Where's your horse, Alcalde?

de Soto [off camera]
I don't know.  Give me yours.

[The lancers and horses clear away and Zorro has disappeared.]

Voices
Huh?  Where did Zorro go?  Where'd he go?

[The Indians look around as hoof beats are heard off camera.]

[Exterior shot of the countryside as Zorro rides Toronado across a rocky meadow.]
