First US Airdate 14 September 1990 Episode 2.1

[Exterior shot of the pueblo's plaza where market stall are set up and people are milling about.]

[Closeup shot of a primitive vacuum cleaner as a man steps on two pedals and people gather around to watch.]

Man [as the camera pulls back]
See, you just do a little dance on this.  It sucks the dirt up off the floor into the tube.  I'm going to call it a vacuum cleaner.

Voices [off camera]
Ooo.  Aah.

Man [off camera at first as Mendoza and Victoria look on]
Medicinal cures.  Exotic potions from far away lands. [He holds up a bottle then crouches down and picks up a wheeled object.] Toys.  Toys!  Music makers.  Everything for your personal convenience. [He stands up.] Every convenience item from Doctor Wayne's convenience wagon. [to Victoria] Señorita, you look like you could use something of the young homemaker. [He turns around and picks up a gadget.] What about the first mechanical bread mixer?

Victoria
I happen to be a businesswoman, thank you.

[Doctor Wayne reaches over and picks up a fan-like object.]

Doctor Wayne
Well then, the world's first patented hair dryer.  Guaranteed to save you hours a night with that beautiful hair.  Only five pesos.

Mendoza [as Doctor Wayne makes the fan blades spin]
What a good idea.

Victoria
Oh, all right.  I'll take one.

[She hands Doctor Wayne some coins.]

Doctor Wayne [handing her the fan]
Here you are.  Enjoy it.  Enjoy it.  How about you, Sergeant?  Doctor Wayne's personal private formula, guaranteed [He picks up a bottle of brown liquid.] to capture the heart of any woman.  My one day only military discount. . three pesos. [He opens the bottle and waves the stopper under Mendoza's nose.] Not some women, Sergeant.  Any woman.

Mendoza
I'll take it.

[He goes to get out his money.  Ramón walks through the crowd gathered around Doctor Wayne's wagon.  Mendoza gives Doctor Wayne some coins in exchange for the bottle.]

Doctor Wayne
You rogue.

[Mendoza turns around and lets Victoria smell the bottle's contents.]

Doctor Wayne [to Ramón]
Señor, you look like a man of taste and breeding.  Just the sort who might use my scientifically tested buttons.

[Ramón shakes his head.]

Man Standing Behind Ramón
I know him.  He won't buy anything.

Ramón
Do you have anything of a military value?

Doctor Wayne
Military. [He thinks for a moment.] Yes. [He reaches into his wagon and pulls out a very long sword.] Guaranteed to keep the enemy at bay, [He then thrusts the sword out in front of him.] and run them through at a safe distance.

Mendoza [impressed]
Can you imagine that, Alcalde?

Ramón [not impressed]
Indeed.  The man is nothing more than a huckster.

[He turns and walks away.  Doctor Wayne puts down the sword and jumps down from his wagon, chasing after Ramón.]

Doctor Wayne
My good fellow, [Ramón stops and turns around.]  there is nothing Doctor Henry Wayne can't invent.  You just tell me what you need and I'll invent it for you.  You have my personal guarantee.

Ramón
And what if you fail?

Doctor Wayne
Then I'll give you your money back.  No, no, better than that, I'll give you double your money back.

Ramón
Then I want you to invent me a way to trap Zorro.

Doctor Wayne [confused]
Zorro?

[Ramón nods then points forward then walks away.  Doctor Wayne follows him as Victoria and Mendoza look on.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Closeup shot of an apple being peeled as it spins around on a contraption that is being hand cranked.  The camera pulls back to show Doctor Wayne turning the crank as Victoria, Mendoza, and others look on inside the tavern.  Doctor Wayne finishes peeling the apple and removes it from the contraption.]

Doctor Wayne [handing the apple to Mendoza]
Here you are, Sergeant.  Pardon my fingers.

[Mendoza laughs then hands the apple to Victoria.  Diego walks up to the end of the bar where everyone is assembled.]

Diego
Very clever machine.

Doctor Wayne
Only fifty pesos, Señor.

Diego [offering his hand]
Don Diego de la Vega.

Doctor Wayne [shaking Diego's hand]
Ah, for a caballero, Doctor Wayne's patented peeler is available for only thirty pesos.

Diego [looking at the peeler]
It really is an ingenious device.  The intricate gear system.  But wouldn't it be easier and more healthful to simply eat the apple with the peel?

Doctor Wayne [as he puts his arms around Diego's shoulders and leads him away]
Pushing the limits of scientific endeavor is no middling proposition.  Just look at this rotary drive and this ratchet.

Diego
As described in Archimedes' early works.

Doctor Wayne [impressed]
You've studied the sciences?

Diego
Oh, I just dabble.

[Doctor Wayne points to his right then goes over and sits down at a table near the door.  Diego follows.]

Doctor Wayne [conspiratorially]
The Alcalde has hired me to invent a method to eliminate Zorro.  Perhaps you'd like to help?

Diego
I'm really not the sort of man for that kind of job.

Ramón [coming up to their table]
He's right, Doctor Wayne.  Just because a man is educated, it doesn't necessarily make him courageous.  Here. [He tosses a thick bundle of papers onto their table.] These are the official reports of every known sighting of Zorro.  It will prove of great value to you in designing your trap.

[Doctor Wayne thumbs through the large stack of papers.]

Doctor Wayne
This could take a week.

Diego
Perhaps I can be of assistance, Doctor Wayne.  Reading is one of my favorite pastimes.

Ramón
Armchair soldier, eh, de la Vega?

Diego
Ah, merely offering to do my civic duty, Alcalde.

Doctor Wayne [to Diego]
I'll take all the help I can get.

Diego
Wise man.

Ramón
Now, I want to hear all about your plan.

[He points to the open door. Doctor Wayne stands up, picks up his peeler and leaves the tavern, followed by Ramón.  Diego picks up the bundle of papers and looks at them, then chuckles.]

[Closeup shot of the flame of a Bunsen burner and a glass container filled with a blue liquid topped with white foam.]

Diego [as the camera pans upward to reveal he is in the secret cave]
See how the warm air rises and lifts the silk.

[He lifts the burner up under a piece of dark-colored silk suspended from a metal hoop as Felipe watches.  The silk barely flutters.]

Diego [raising up his free hand[
And lifts the silk.

[The silk flutters slightly.  Felipe starts laughing.  Diego sets down the burner.]

Diego
Well, it works for the Montgolfier brothers in France.  Of course the silk needs to be larger.  More of a sphere.

[Loud knocking is heard off camera.]

Diego
That will be the esteemed Doctor Wayne. [He pats Felipe's shoulder.] Come on.

[They turn around and walk toward the exit.  Diego goes off to his right as Felipe goes over to the viewing hole and looks through it.]

[Shot from Felipe's point of view of the hacienda library which is deserted.]

[Interior shot of the secret cave as Diego comes up behind Felipe.  Felipe shakes his head.  They leave the cave.]

[Interior shot of the de la Vega hacienda foyer as Felipe leads Doctor Wayne inside. Diego comes up to them, extending his hand.]

Diego [as they shake hands]
Doctor Wayne, I trust your plans are going well.

Doctor Wayne
Actually, the Alcalde and I have been planning a little surprise for Zorro.

Diego
Ah, that sounds promising.

Doctor Wayne
And has you research revealed anything of value?

Diego
Well, I think so.  From what I can tell, Zorro is somewhat predictable.  He always rides the same horse, carries a sword. . .and a whip.

Doctor Wayne
Ah, primitive tools at best.

Diego
Absolutely.  He's obviously unaccustomed to dealing with anything of a technical nature.  My guess is that he's right under our noses.

Doctor Wayne
Hmm.  Perhaps all the Alcalde needs is a better vantage point.

Diego [crossing his arms over his chest]
Possibly.  You know, I've been doing some reading about the Montgolfier brothers' experiment.

Doctor Wayne
Lighter than air flights.  Absolutely revolutionary.  But it's a lot of work.

Diego
Well, it was just a thought.

[He looks over at Felipe who is trying not to laugh.]

Doctor Wayne [as Diego goes to stand beside Felipe]
Ah well, you see, that's the difference between you and me.  Whereas for you, science is just a hobby.  For me, it's my life.  Excuse me.

[He turns and walks off to his left.  Diego and Felipe look at each other and chuckle.]

[Exterior night shot of Ramón's office.]

Doctor Wayne [off camera at first]
Anyone coming through that door will hit my first trip wire, firing these muskets.

[Interior shot of Ramón's office as Doctor Wayne touches a metal circle with four protruding musket barrels which is part of a larger wood and metal contraption.]

Ramón [pointing forward]
And what if he misses the wire?  Zorro is not as clumsy as you may think.

Doctor Wayne
Good question.  Good question.  Look at this.

[He crouches down and lifts up a rug under which a black object sits.  He puts the rug back down.]

Doctor Wayne
He'll step on this. . . [He pounds his fist on the rug. A knife is propelled from the contraption and sails over Doctor Wayne's head, sticking into the door.] and that will happen.

[He stands up and pulls the knife out of the door.]

Doctor Wayne
I have more than a dozen back-up devices here. [He walks back over to Ramón and the contraption.] Anybody who comes through that door is as good as dead.

Ramón
What makes you think Zorro will come?

Doctor Wayne
All it takes is the right bait.

Ramón
Bait. . .

[He bounces his fist off his chin as he thinks.]

Doctor Wayne [as he puts a knife back into the contraption]
Surely you must know something that will bring him here.

Ramón [starting to grin evilly and pointing at Doctor Wayne]
Yes.  Yes.  I think I know just what that would be.

[Interior day shot of the tavern as Mendoza and two other lancers armed with muskets walk through the opened doors.  Mendoza is carrying a scroll.  Victoria turns around and sees Mendoza and the other lancers.]

Victoria [scoldingly]
Mendoza, you know I don't allow rifles in my tavern.

Mendoza
Señorita Escalante, I apologize.  It is my unpleasant duty to put you under arrest.

Victoria
Under arrest?  And for what?

[Mendoza unrolls the scroll.]

Mendoza [reading from the scroll.]
Consorting with the enemy bandit Zorro.

[Victoria looks indignant.]

Mendoza [in a low voice]
Señorita, your feelings for him are pretty obvious.

[The two lancers come up and grab Victoria's arms.]

Victoria [as they lead her away]
Ooo, Mendoza!

[Mendoza rolls up the scrolls and follows them out of the tavern.  People inside talk excitedly.]

[Exterior night shot of the hidden cave entrance as it opens up and Zorro and Toronado ride through it.]

[Exterior night shot of Zorro and Toronado riding through the countryside.]

[Exterior night shot of a white adobe building.  Zorro brings Toronado to a halt in front of it and climbs up on its narrow wooden ledge, then up onto its roof.]

[Exterior night shot of the cuartel gate as two lancers march up to each other then turn around and walk in opposite directions.]

[Exterior night shot of Zorro climbing across the cuartel roof.]

[Interior shot of Ramón's office as Ramón and Doctor Wayne look upward.]

Doctor Wayne [whispering]
Is that him?

[Ramón nods excitedly.]

[Exterior night shot of Zorro climbing up onto the office roof.]

Victoria [off camera as Zorro crouches down to listen]
I won't tell you anything!

Ramón [off camera and sternly]
Talk or you die!  I want his name!

[Zorro moves off to his right.]

[Interior shot of Ramón's office as Doctor Wayne holds up a round device up to his mouth and speaks into it.]

Doctor Wayne [sounding like Victoria]
Please!  Don't!  Don't!  I don't know!  I don't know!

[Victoria is bound and gagged as she sits on a cot in a cell.]

[Exterior night shot of Zorro walking on the cuartel roof.  He crouches down over the cuartel gate.]

[Interior shot of the cuartel jail as Ramón walks up to Victoria.]

Ramón
Señorita Escalante, I will have you hung in the morning!

[Exterior night shot of the cuartel gate as the two lancers stand in front of it, back to back.  As they start to move away from each other, Zorro jumps down behind them, grabs their shoulders and knocks their heads together.  They fall to the ground.  Zorro turns around.]

Doctor Wayne [off camera with his voice sounding like Victoria's]
But I know nothing.  You must. . .  You must believe me.

[Zorro goes over to the cuartel gate then turns and heads toward the front door of Ramón's office.  He puts his hand on the door knob.]

[Interior shot of the cuartel jail as Victoria sits on the cot and Doctor Wayne speaks into his device.]

Doctor Wayne [in Victoria's voice]
Please!  Please!  Don't!  Don't!

[Interior shot of Ramón's office where Doctor Wayne's contraption of doom awaits.]

[Closeup night shot of Zorro's gloved hand turning the door knob to Ramón's office.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Closeup night shot of Zorro's gloved hand turning the door knob to Ramón's office.]

Mendoza [off camera at first]
Zorro!

[Zorro turns around and raises his arms then jumps at Mendoza and two other lancers who come up behind them.]

Zorro
Aaa!

Mendoza
Aaa!

[Zorro runs around behind them then pushes the two lancers so they stumble.]

Mendoza
After him!  After him!

[Zorro darts from side to side of a porch post as the lancers try to grab him.]

Mendoza
Get him!

[Zorro salutes then runs off to his left.  Mendoza pushes the lancers forward.  Zorro runs toward an archway.]

Mendoza
Vamo!  Vamo!

[Zorro peers out from behind a wall.  One of the lancers stops and looks around then runs off to his right.  Zorro runs out from behind the wall and runs off to his right.  He climbs up on some barrels then onto a porch  roof where he flattens himself it.  Mendoza and the other lancers stop in front of the porch and look around frantically.]

Mendoza
He's got to be here somewhere! [He waves his arm at the lancers.] Keep looking!  Keep looking!

[He walks away.  Zorro gets to his feet and climbs up onto the building's roof.  He goes over to Ramón's office where he coils his whip around a protruding beam then lowers himself down the side of the office.  He stops and looks through a window.]

[Interior shot of the cuartel jail where Victoria is still bound and gagged and sitting on the cot as Doctor Wayne speaks into his device.]

Doctor Wayne [in Victoria's voice]
Zorro will save me.  You'll see.

[Exterior night shot of Ramón's office where Zorro is hanging on his whip, looking through the window.  He chuckles silently.  He climbs back up his whip and onto the office roof where he looks down.  He sees Mendoza and the other lancers scrambling around below.]

Mendoza
He's here somewhere.  Keep searching!

[Zorro jumps from one roof to another then watches Mendoza direct the lancers below.]

Mendoza [pointing his arms in every direction]
Faster!  Faster!

[The lancers are running all around.]

Mendoza
Come on!

[He walks toward Ramón's office.]

Zorro [standing in front of the cuartel gate]
Sergeant!

Mendoza [turning to his left]
Zorro!

[He then turns and continues walking toward the office door.]

Zorro
No!

[He coils his whip around Mendoza's ankles.  Mendoza falls on his face through the door.]

[Interior shot of Ramón's office as the muskets on the contraption of doom fire one by one.  A knife flies toward the door.  Ramón and Doctor Wayne run giddily into the office from the jail.]

Doctor Wayne
Oh, terrific!  Terrific!  All my devices worked just as I planned.  [Ramón claps his hands together.] Ah, look at this!

[Doctor Wayne steps toward the door.  Mendoza coughs and chokes as he gets to his feet.]

Ramón [incredulously]
Mendoza.

Mendoza
Si, mi Alcalde.

Ramón [pointing at Doctor Wayne]
You blithering dunce!  We got the wrong man!  Zorro is nowhere to be seen!

Mendoza [pointing toward the door]
Zorro is right out there!

Ramón
After him!

[He runs forward. Mendoza runs past him going in the opposite direction.  Ramón stops and looks over his shoulder.]

Ramón
Men. . .  Oh dear God. . .

[He runs out his office door, followed by Doctor Wayne.]

[Exterior night shot of Ramón's office as Zorro somersaults down from under the porch roof then goes inside the office.]

[Closeup shot of a knife opening the door of the cuartel jail.  Zorro steps inside and closes the door then goes over to Victoria.  He removes the gag from her mouth. ]

Victoria
Zorro, it's a trap.

Zorro
It springs both ways.

[He goes to untie her hands.]

[Exterior night shot of Ramón's office as Ramón and Doctor Wayne run up to its porch.]

Ramón
He's got to be here somewhere. [He turns and raises his right arm.] A promotion in rank to the man who finds him!

Doctor Wayne
The problem is he moves too swiftly for us to follow on foot.

Victoria [off camera]
Help!  Zorro!  Over here!  Hurry, hurry, before the Alcalde finds you!

Ramón
He moves quickly but not quickly enough.

[He runs to the front door of his office and Doctor Wayne follows.]

[Interior shot of the cuartel jail where Zorro's shadow is cast against the wall to the left of the door.]

Victoria [off camera]
Quick, Zorro!  Hurry, Zorro!  Oh, please, Zorro. . .

[Ramón and Doctor Wayne come through the door and stop when they see Victoria leaning against the wall outside her cell with her arms crossed over her chest.]

Victoria
You must cut these. . .ropes

[Ramón steps toward her but Zorro's saber is thrust across his and Doctor Wayne's chests.]

Zorro [in a low voice]
You really should do something about your office, Alcalde.  It's quite a mess.

Ramón
I had you.  You were dead.

Zorro
Trouble the señorita again and it shall be you who will be dead.  This way, gentlemen.

[He removes his saber and points it toward the far cell.  Ramón and Doctor Wayne walk inside the cell and Zorro locks the door.  He and Victoria then leave.  Ramón grabs the cell bars and looks upset.  Through the open door, Mendoza can be seen entering the office.]

Ramón [off camera]
Mendoza!

[Mendoza comes running into the jail.]

Mendoza
Alcalde!  Alcalde! [He stops when he sees the men in the cell.] What are you doing here?  My men just spotted Zorro.

Ramón
Open the door, fool!

[Mendoza fumbles with his keys and unlocks the cell door then opens it.  Ramón pushes past him, followed by Doctor Wayne.  They walk into Ramón's office.]

Doctor Wayne
This Zorro is a very clever fellow, isn't he?

Ramón
If we could only track him to his hiding place.

Doctor Wayne [turning to face Ramón]
I may have the way.

Ramón
One more mistake from you and they will find your bones parched in the desert.

Doctor Wayne
Trust me, following Zorro to his lair is simply a matter of duplicating the Montgolfier flights.

[Ramón and Mendoza look at each other, obviously having no idea what he is talking about.]

Ramón
Of course.

Mendoza
We knew that.

Doctor Wayne
It's a big job.  But if we can find enough silk, we can track Zorro easily.

[He turns and walks to his right.  The camera pans closer to Ramón and Mendoza who look confused as they turn to look at each other.]

Ramón and Mendoza
Silk?

[Exterior day shot of the pueblo as a hot air balloon is hovering near the outskirts of town.  Doctor Wayne stands with his back to the balloon as Ramón and Mendoza face him.]

Ramón
Most impressive, Doctor Wayne.

Doctor Wayne
All you have to do is untie those ropes and your personal balloon will rise high above the pueblo.

Ramón
And wherever Zorro goes, I'll be able to see him.

Doctor Wayne
Precisely.  All you have to do it keep those sandbags and your flight will be perfectly controlled.

Ramón [turning to Mendoza]
Is the firing squad ready?

Mendoza [as Doctor Wayne smiles]
Si, mi Alcalde.

[Two lancers come up and grab Doctor Wayne's arms.]

Doctor Wayne [as he is dragged away]
Wait!  Wait!  What's the meaning of this?  Wait!  What are you doing?  Alcalde, what is this?

[The lancers drag him over to a pole and hold him up against it.]

Doctor Wayne [looking up behind him]
Not the pole!  No!

Ramón [raising his right index finger]
Zorro is not going to appear unless we have the proper. . .bait.

Doctor Wayne [incredulously]
Bait?

Ramón
I doubt very much if he will fall for us arresting Señorita Escalante again. [He points to Mendoza.] Proceed.

Mendoza [to the lancers holding Doctor Wayne]
Tie him up.

Doctor Wayne [as Ramón and Mendoza walk away]
Alcalde!  No!  Alcalde!  Please!

[Ramón and Mendoza go over to the balloon's basket.  Ramón bows and indicates the basket to Mendoza.]

Mendoza
Alcalde, can we talk about this?

Ramón
Get in, Sergeant.  We're going to revolutionize the law enforcement of this pueblo.

[Mendoza climbs into the basket, knocking off a sandbag.  The lancers walk away from Doctor Wayne.]

Ramón [now standing inside the basket]
For breach of contract with this government office.  For failure to capture the bandit Zorro as promised, Doctor Henry Wayne is hereby sentenced to death by firing squad!

Victoria [angrily]
You know very well that Zorro will not stand for this.

Ramón [with an evil grin]
That is exactly what I am counting on, Señorita. [to Mendoza] Is the prisoner ready?

Mendoza
Yes, mi Alcalde.  But I don't think he likes it very much.

Ramón [to the lancers]
Ready your weapons.

[The line of lancers raise this muskets.  Doctor Wayne grimaces.]

Ramón [off camera as Zorro rides into the pueblo]
Aim!

Victoria [turning and see Zorro]
Zorro!

Ramón
Perfect.  He fell for it!

[Zorro rides up to the line of lancers and cracks his whip at them, hitting the one on the end nearest him.  They all stagger backwards, some dropping their muskets.]

Mendoza [off camera]
Yes.  The trick is going to be to catch him now.

Ramón [off camera at first]
Oh, don't worry, Sergeant. [He pats the basket.] With this thing, we can track him into the ground.

[Zorro rides up to Doctor Wayne and uses his saber to slice through the ropes tying Doctor Wayne's hands to the pole.  Zorro then rides up to a lancer who is holding the balloon's rope.  Zorro brings Toronado to a halt, looks at Ramón and Mendoza then slices the rope with his saber.  The balloon starts to lift up into the air.]

Ramón [frantically]
Hold the rope!  Hold the rope!

[The balloon continues to rise.  Several lancers run over and try to grab onto the rope.]

Ramón
Hold the rope!

[The lancers grab onto the rope but it pulls out of their hands as the balloon rises higher.  They fall into a big pile on the ground.]

Ramón
Don't worry, Zorro!  Run where you want!  I'll track you in this!

[He pats the basket again.]

Mendoza
Alcalde. . .I don't feel good.

Zorro
I doubt that, Alcalde.  If not of the freshening winds blowing out to sea. . .

[He salutes them with his saber.]

Ramón
He's right!  We're going the wrong way!  We're going out to sea!

Mendoza
Alcalde!

Ramón [grabbing Mendoza's arm]
Do something!

[Zorro rides up to Doctor Wayne who is still standing by the pole.]

Zorro
Climb aboard.

Doctor Wayne [a bit indignantly]
You must be joking.  I'm not in league with you.

Zorro
The choice is yours: You can come with me or face the Alcalde's firing squad.

Doctor Wayne [shaking his head]
He wouldn't. . .

Zorro
I doubt he'll be very happy with you, my friend.

[Doctor Wayne climbs up behind Zorro and they ride over to where Victoria is standing.]

Zorro
Excuse me, Señorita, but the good doctor requires a bit more of an education.

[Victoria looks disappointed as Zorro winks at her.  He and Doctor Wayne then ride out of the pueblo.]

[Exterior shot of the coastline as the balloon carrying Ramón and Mendoza drifts out to sea.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Interior shot of the secret cave as Zorro walks toward a blindfolded Doctor Wayne.]

Zorro
My apologies.  But the location of this place must remain a secret.

[He takes off Doctor Wayne's blindfold.  Doctor Wayne looks around in amazement as a few notes the theme from the 1960's Batman series plays.  Zorro holds out his hands.]

Doctor Wayne
Incredible.  A secret cave.  How splendid!

Zorro
As a man of science I thought you might appreciate it.

Doctor Wayne
Oh, I do.  I do. [He steps forward.] Is that a laboratory I see?

Zorro [following him over to the lab table]
Exactly.  I have great respect for scientific endeavor, Doctor Wayne, so long as it is used for progress and not oppression.  You do have a certain inventive genius.

Doctor Wayne [turning to face Zorro]
Do you really think so?

Zorro
The only proof of it will be the good you can do with it.  Any fool can wreck havoc.

Doctor Wayne
The Alcalde.

Zorro
The biggest fool of all. [He holds out the blindfold.] I'll take you to your wagon so you can be on your way before the Alcalde gets back.

Doctor Wayne [taking the blindfold]
The Alcalde's gone.  He's heading out to sea.

Zorro [nodding]
I know.  And I doubt Sergeant Mendoza is much of a swimmer.

[Doctor Wayne lifts the blindfold to his eyes as Zorro guides him over to Toronado.]

[Exterior shot of the coast as the balloon floats overhead.]

[Exterior shot of Zorro riding Toronado down a steep, sandy hillside.]

[Closeup shot of the balloon basket as Ramón comes up and peers over its edge.]

Ramón
It's out!  It's the ocean. [He grabs Mendoza's arm.] Do something!

Mendoza
I would if I could, mi Alcalde.  But what can I do?

[Exterior shot of Zorro riding Toronado through the shallow surf.]

[Closeup shot of the balloon basket.]

Mendoza [as Ramón bites his gloved knuckles]
Santa Maria!

[Exterior shot of Zorro riding Toronado along the beach.]

[Closeup shot of the balloon basket as Ramón and Mendoza look down then look terrified.]

[Shot from Ramón's and Mendoza's point of view as Zorro stops Toronado under them and raises his right arm.  He holds something in his right hand.]

[Closeup shot of the balloon basket.]

Ramón [clutching Mendoza' arm then ducking down]
He's going to kill me!

Mendoza
No, no, don't worry, sir.  Zorro is not that kind of a man.

[Closeup shot of Zorro holding up a small crossbow then firing.]

[Closeup of the balloon basket as Mendoza jerks to his left.]

Mendoza
Goa!

[Closeup shot of the balloon as the dart pierces it.]

[Closeup shot of the balloon basket as Ramón grabs the ropes holding the basket to the balloon and looks upward.]

[Closeup of the balloon as the dart slides downward, tearing the silk.]

[Closeup shot of the balloon basket as air can be heard hissing.]

Mendoza [making the sign of the cross]
Santa Maria.

[Exterior shot of the beach as the balloon sinks.]

Mendoza [off camera]
Aaah!

[Closeup shot of Zorro laughing as a splash is heard off camera.]

[Exterior shot of the water as Ramón tips over the basket.]

Ramón
You blithering dunce!

[He falls into the water as Mendoza watches.]

Ramón
After him!

[Ramón and Mendoza wade toward the shore but keep falling down in the surf.]
