First US Airdate 24 April 1992 Episode 3.25

[Exterior shot of the pueblo plaza which is filled with people milling about.]

[Close-up of a sign which reads, "Citizen!  Glory Travel Adventure in the Service of the Spanish Empire."  Also on the sign is a drawing of a soldier holding a large flag in his right hand and a musket in his left.]

[Exterior shot of Felipe reading the sign.  He turns away from it, scratching the back of his head, then rubs his right eye with his right hand.]

[Exterior shot of the tavern with people milling about in front of it.]

[Interior shot of Mendoza standing at a table where Don Alejandro and Diego are sitting across from each other.]

Mendoza
. . .and so the stagecoach driver says, ‘Amigos, I have some good news and some bad news.  The bad news is we're lost.  The good news is we're making excellent time.'

[He laughs loudly as Don Alejandro and Diego smile and chuckle.  Don Alejandro starts clapping his hands as Diego stands up.  Diego looks over at Felipe who is sitting at a table across the room by the bar and his expression turns serious.]

Don Alejandro
No one can tell a joke like you can, Sergeant.

[Diego walks behind Mendoza and Don Alejandro and goes over to Felipe's table.]

Mendoza [off camera]
It's your turn to pay

Don Alejandro [off camera]
As always, Sergeant.

Diego [standing in front of Felipe's table]
What is it, Felipe?

[Felipe puts his hands to his chest then runs his hand over both shoulders, then hold up his right hand while resting his elbow on his left hand.]

Diego
You want to join the army?

[Felipe puts his hands to his chest again then spreads out his arms in a circle.  Mendoza and Don Alejandro have walked over to the bar and Mendoza turns around to look at Diego and Felipe.]

Diego [as he sits down at Felipe's table]
You're serious?  You want to serve your country?

Mendoza
Excellent idea, Felipe.  I will personally take you under my wing.

Don Alejandro
Sergeant, please.

[He puts his hand on Mendoza's arms and diverts his attention.]

Diego [to Felipe]
You want to see the world, just as I did.

[Felipe nods.]

Diego [shaking his head]
Felipe, you're so young.

[Felipe shakes his head then touches his hand to his chest then points at Diego.]

Diego
So you are the same age as I was when I went to Madrid.  But there is a bit of a difference.

[Felipe looks upset.]

Diego [lowering his voice and leaning forward a little]
Everyone thinks you're deaf.

[Felipe looks angry and gets up and walks away.  Diego watches him leave before turning around and looking upset himself.]

[Exterior shot of Felipe riding his horse across a hillside.  He rides behind a rock then turns back around and dismounts.  He rubs his horse's mane as he watches a stagecoach drive past below him.]

[Close-up of boot heels in stirrups kicking a horse's side.]

Voices
Hyah!  Hyah!

[Three men on horseback quickly ride down the hill.  Felipe watches with a worried expression.  The three men chase after the coach and firing a shot.  One of the bandits climbs onto the coach and jumps behind the driver.  Then the bandit stabs the driver in the back.  The driver falls off the coach and rolls onto the ground.  The bandit brings the coach's horses to a halt.]

Bandit
Whoa!

[The stagecoach stops and a man looks out the window.  Felipe is hiding behind a big rock and peeps up over its tops to watch.  The bandits are facing him, their faces unmasked.]

Bandit Leader
Ha!  Ha!

[The bandits pull up bandanas over the lower half of their faces.  Felipe ducks down behind the rock.  The bandits open the coach door.]

Bandits [pointing their pistols at the passengers]
All right!  Get out!

[Felipe is walking across the top of the big rock when his foot hits a smaller rock and it noisily rolls downhill.]

Bandit [turning around]
What's that?

[The bandit leader turns around as he pulls a woman from the coach.]

[Exterior shot of the hillside.]

[One of the bandits takes a step closer to the hillside.  Felipe is hiding behind a bush, obviously worried about being discovered.  The bandit pats the bandit leader on the shoulder and points at the hillside.]

Bandit
Up there!

Bandit Leader
He saw everything!

Bandit
He must have seen us kill the driver!

[Felipe runs away.  The bandit starts running up the hill.  Felipe jumps onto his horse, turns around and rides away.  The bandits run over to their horses.]

Bandits
Let's get him!  Come on!

[They ride away from the coach.  Felipe rides to the top of a hill then disappears down the other side.  The bandits stop and watch him ride away.]

Bandit Leader
If he talks, we all hang.  We'll split up.  Meet at the black oak at midnight.  I want that boy's head.

[The three bandits ride down the hillside.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Exterior shot of Felipe riding through trees and rocks.  The bandits chase after him.  Felipe rides up next to a large rock then dismounts.  He slaps his horse on the rump and waves his arms at it.  One of the bandits rides around looking for him.  The bandit leader stops and draws out his pistol when he hears a horse's whinny.  Felipe runs then jumps with both feet onto a spot on the ground, then runs inside the secret cave entrance.  The bandit leader rides in that direction.]

[Interior shot of Diego in the secret cave, sanding a three-pronged boomerang-like object.  Diego looks puzzled as he hears footsteps.  Suddenly Felipe rushes into the cave and stops near Toronado, breathing hard.]

Diego [getting to his feet]
Felipe?

[Felipe points to his chest then points toward the cave entrance then puts his fists together in an up and down motion.  He then mimics firing a pistol.  Diego looks grim then goes to his left.]

[Exterior shot of the bandit leader riding through trees and rocks.]

[Interior shot of the secret cave where Zorro is holding his ‘boomerang'.]

Zorro [to an off screen Felipe]
Tell my father to take you to town to make an official report on the murder you saw.

[Zorro swings up onto Toronado's back.]

Zorro [ as he backs up then turns Toronado]
Tell him I went fishing.

[Toronado's hoof steps on the wooden square that activates the pulleys that open the cave exit.]

[Exterior shot of the cave entrance opening and Zorro and Toronado riding out through it.]

[Exterior shot of one of the bandits bringing his horse to a halt.]

Bandit
Whoa!

[He looks down at the ground then he looks up before urging his horse forward.  Another of the bandits rides down a hillside.  He slows to a stop.  A whistle catches his attention.  The bandit looks around.  Zorro rides up on Toronado, whistles again then salutes.  The bandit dismounts and carries his musket over to some rocks.  Zorro spins Toronado around and they ride off.  The bandit aims the musket at Zorro, who dismounts and hides behind some rocks.  The bandit fires at Zorro but misses.  The bandit then ducks down behind the rocks.]

Zorro [peering over his rocks]
Time to go fishing.

[He stands up.  The bandit is trying to reload his musket.  Zorro throws his boomerang to his right and it spins through the air.  It hits the bandit on the head.

Zorro [pumping his fist in the air]
Yeah!

[The bandit slumps forward.]

Zorro
The next two might not be so easy.

[He goes over to Toronado.]

[Exterior shot of the pueblo.  De Soto and several other townspeople are looking down at the murdered stagecoach driver as Mendoza crouches down beside him.  The stage passengers are also gathered around.  Mendoza crosses himself as he stands up.]

Mendoza
Stabbed in the back, mi Alcalde.

de Soto
At least we have eyewitnesses.

Mendoza
Nobody saw their faces.  They were wearing masks.

de Soto [to the coach passengers]
Yes, but the leader was riding a black stallion, yes?

Passengers [shaking their heads]
No. No.

de Soto
He was all dressed in black, with a cape.

Passengers [still shaking their heads]
No.  No.

Don Alejandro [off camera at first]
Alcalde!

[Don Alejandro stands up in the carriage as everyone turns to look at him.]

Don Alejandro
It wasn't Zorro.

de Soto
Just how do you know that, de la Vega?

Don Alejandro [as Felipe sits next to him in the carriage]
Because Felipe here, he saw everything.

Voices [gasping]
He saw?

[On the tavern porch, the bandit leader looks up as the people murmur excitedly.]

de Soto [as he walks toward to Don Alejandro and Felipe.]

Felipe, you saw who killed this man?  You saw their faces?

[Felipe nods.]

de Soto
Well. . .  Excellent.  Once my men have ridden the killer to the ground., [He points at Felipe.] your testimony will hang them.

[Felipe looks nervous as Don Alejandro grabs his shoulder.  Victoria walks out of the tavern, carrying a pitcher and a glass on a tray.  She set them down in front of the bandit leader.]

Bandit Leader
That boy. [Victoria looks over at Felipe.] He must be very brave.

Victoria
Felipe?  He certainly is.

Bandit Leader
He is from the pueblo?

Victoria [shaking her head]
No, he lives at the de la Vega hacienda.

[She turns to go but a horse's whinny causes her to turn back around.  A man slung over the back of a horse comes into the plaza.  Don Alejandro grabs the horse's head.]

Don Alejandro.
Whoa now.  Come on.  Come on.

Victoria [sounding annoyed]
Now what?

[She walks off the tavern porch toward the others.]

Don Alejandro [off camera]
Sergeant, give me a hand here.

[Victoria goes over and touches Felipe on the shoulder.  De Soto and Mendoza pull the man off the back of the horse.  They stand him up then spin him around.  De Soto pulls on the man's vest and uncovers a ‘Z' slashed onto it.  The bandit leaders stands up.]

Don Alejandro
I told you, Alcalde.

de Soto [to Felipe as he takes off the bandit's hat]
Is this one of the men?

[Felipe is standing between Victoria and Don Alejandro and he nods then points at the bandit.]

de Soto
Oh Sergeant, take him to the jail.

[Mendoza leads the bandit away.  The bandit leader walks off the porch and sneaks off to his left.  Felipe stares at the man Mendoza is leading away and rubs the back of his neck.]

[Interior shot of the de la Vega library as Diego walks out through the fireplace panel and into the room.]

Don Alejandro [off camera]
Felipe, [Diego turns and grabs a book sitting on a table.] why is Diego never around when he's needed?

[Diego walks out of the library carrying the opened book.]

Diego [innocently]
Where you look for me?

Don Alejandro
Yes.  When you were out fishing, this young man witnessed the murder of the Monterey coach driver.

Diego
How awful.

Don Alejandro
There's more.  He's identified one of the three killers.

Diego [smiling]
Really?  Well done.

[Felipe smiles back at Diego.]

Don Alejandro
Once the Alcalde captures the other two suspects, he wants to testify against them.

Diego
I'm impressed.

Don Alejandro
You should be, Diego.  And maybe you should stop treating him like he's a boy.

Diego [to Felipe]
You're still serious about wanting to join the army?

[Felipe nods then puts his fingers by his eyes then makes a sweeping gesture with his right hand.  He then throws his hands up in disgust.  Don Alejandro touches his hand to Felipe's arm.]

Don Alejandro [as he and Diego walk a little way away.]
Diego. . .  I know you're concerned about Felipe's deafness.

Diego
Yes, there is that.

Don Alejandro
Why don't you let Felipe handle his handicap himself.  He's got to grow up sometime.

[Don Alejandro turns and leaves.  Diego turns around and goes back over to Felipe.]

Diego [indicating a chair at the dining room table]
Have a seat.

[They both sit down.]

Diego [sighing]
I know you want to see the world, whether you have the power of speech or not.

[Felipe puts his hand to his chest then touches his lips then cups his hand by his right ear.]

Diego [shaking his head]
Well, if you leave Los Angeles, there's certainly no reason why you have to go on pretending you can't hear.

[Felipe holds up his hands, then points at his throat then to his lips.]

Diego [leaning forward]
Felipe, your complete comprehension of speech makes me certain that you once did speak.  I believe, given enough time, you can speak again, in spite of . . what you went through.

[The scene morphs into a smoke-filled clearing as shots rings out and people are shouting.]

Diego [voiceover]
The battle was so one-sided.

[A soldier is shot and falls to the ground.  Another soldier runs up to the fallen man but gets shot too.]

Diego [voiceover]
The rebels didn't have a chance against the government troops.

[More soldiers running and shouting through the clearing.]

Diego [voiceover]
It was confusing.  There were soldiers everywhere.

[A soldier rides by the shell of house.  A man and woman (Felipe's parents) push a small boy (Felipe) in a cart as soldiers run by them.]

Diego [voiceover]
Your mother and father protected you.  They loved you, put themselves in harm's way.  No sacrifice was too great.

[An explosion overturns the cart.  The man and woman lie on the ground on opposite sides of the cart.  The boy crawls out from under the overturned cart and goes over to the woman then starts shaking her.]

Diego [voiceover]
Suddenly they were gone.

[The boy stares at the woman.]

Diego [voiceover]
And you were alone.

[The boy ties to say ‘mommy' but no sound comes out.  He puts his hand to his throat.]

[Scene morphs back to Felipe sitting at the table, his eyes full of tears.  He bow his head.]

Diego [leaning in closer]
I know it was terrible.  But if you let go of the past, I know you could speak again.

[He puts his hand on Felipe's shoulder.  Felipe lifts his head up and tries to speak but no sound comes out.]

Diego [looking a little disappointed]
Give it time.  Give it time, Felipe.

[A gunshot shatters a vase sitting on the table.  Diego and Felipe drop to the floor.]

[Exterior shot of the two bandits outside the hacienda gate, shooting at the house.]

Bandit Leader
Keep firing. [He puts one pistol under his arm.] Kill them all!

[He starts to reload his second pistol.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Interior shot of the hacienda as a plate hanging on the wall is shattered by a bullet.]

[Exterior shot of the bandits at the hacienda gate.]

[Interior shot of Diego and Felipe on their hands and knees on the floor, keeping their heads down as a window is shattered by a bullet.]

Diego
Those killers must have followed you here.

Don Alejandro [off camera at first]
Diego!  Can't fight on the floor!

[He comes up behind Diego and Felipe and crouches down.  He is carrying two pistols.]

Don Alejandro [standing back up]
Let's go. [He walks between Diego and Felipe.] Maybe we should scare them away.

[Exterior shot of the bandits at the hacienda gate, shooting at the hacienda.]

[Interior shot of Don Alejandro almost getting hit by a bullet.  He goes down to his knees then gets back up and makes his way to a window.  He knocks a vase of flowers out of his way as he looks out the window.]

[Exterior shot of the bandits shooting from the gate.]

[Closeup shot of Don Alejandro at the window taking aim and firing one of his pistols.]

[Exterior shot of one of the bandits getting his hat shot off.]

[Closeup shot of Don Alejandro aiming his second pistol and firing.]

[The bandit leader gets his hat shot off.]

[Closeup of Don Alejandro looking out the window and nodding.]

[Exterior shot of the bandits running toward their horses.]

Bandit Leader
Vamanos!  Vamanos!

Bandit
That old man's a good shot.

[They ride away.]

Don Alejandro [off camera]
Leaving so soon, amigos?  Old fellow. . .   They're gone, Diego.

[Interior shot of Don Alejandro walking through the hacienda.]

Diego [off camera]
For now.  But they'll be back.

[Don Alejandro comes up to Diego and Felipe who are standing near the library entrance.]

Diego
Next time they'll be ready.  Men like that wait for an ambush.

Don Alejandro
You're right.  Felipe, you can't leave the hacienda.

[Exterior shot of the tavern as people mill about in front of it.]

[Interior shot of de Soto sitting at a table with a plate of food in front of him.  Don Alejandro stands to his left, leaning on one hand against the table.]

de Soto [fiddling with his napkin and silverware]
I really think you're overreacting, de la Vega.

Don Alejandro [a bit angrily]
Diego and Felipe were shot at by ruthless murders in our house.  I returned their gunfire and chase them away.  I'm sorry you think I'm overreacting.

de Soto
Ruthless?  You make it sound so dramatic.

Don Alejandro
Because Felipe can identity them, they're going to try and kill him.

de Soto
De la Vega, the entire garrison is on alerts against a possible escape attempt. I cannot. . .

Don Alejandro
What?

de Soto
Very well.  Very well.  I can afford two men only.

Don Alejandro
Good.  I want your two best marksmen.

de Soto
Of course.  Sergeant Mendoza and Corporal Sepulveda.

Don Alejandro [through clenched teeth]
I said your two best marksmen.

de Soto [shouting]
Take it or leave it!

Don Alejandro [as the other customers in the tavern stop talking]
Fine.  You have them report to my house immediately. [He states at de Soto then swipes his right hand, which is holding a pair of gloves in front of him.] Understood?

[He turns around and leaves.]

[Exterior shot of Mendoza and Sepulveda tying up their horses at the hacienda gate.  They then walk toward the hacienda.]

Don Alejandro [coming out the front door carrying his pistols]
Glad to see both of you gentlemen.

Mendoza
No problem, Don Alejandro.  If you need a little extra protection, you have the right men.

Don Alejandro [patting Mendoza on the arm]
Good.

[He turns and walk toward the hacienda hits the front door.  Another shot rings out as Mendoza and Sepulveda run to take cover.  Don Alejandro runs to his left and crouches down beside Mendoza..]

[Closeup of Diego and Felipe at a window as more shots are fired.]

Diego [patting Felipe on the shoulder]
Stay inside.

[He then dashes to his left, leaving Felipe to stare out the window.]

[Exterior shot of Diego opening the front door of the hacienda.]

Diego
Father, you'll be safer inside!

Don Alejandro [to Mendoza]
They're reloading. [He fires the pistol in his right hand.] Let's go.

[He, Mendoza, and Sepulveda stand up and start going toward the front door.]

Mendoza
The Alcalde should send more men out.

Don Alejandro [waving his pistols]
Go!  Go!  Go!

[Sepulveda and Mendoza run inside the hacienda.  Don Alejandro turns around to face the gate.  The bandits fire a shot.]

[Interior shot of the hacienda foyer as Sepulveda, Mendoza, and Don Alejandro come rushing inside.]

Diego [as he drags Don Alejandro inside]
Come on!

[He shuts the door behind them then takes his hand off Don Alejandro's arm and sees that it is covered with blood as is Don Alejandro's shirt sleeve.]

Diego
Father, you've been hit.

Don Alejandro [glancing down at his arm]
Must be a flesh wound.  I don't feel a thing.  I'm all right.

Diego [pointing at Don Alejandro's arm]
Not unless we stop that bleeding.

[Exterior shot of Felipe riding his horse through another of the hacienda's gate.]

Don Alejandro [looking out the window]
Felipe, no!

[Exterior shot of Felipe riding away from the hacienda.]

Diego [off camera]
He's drawing their fire!

Bandit Leader
There's the kid!  Let's get him!  Come on!

[The bandits run over to their horses.]

[Interior shot of Don Alejandro in the parlor.]

Don Alejandro
Look!  Let's go!

[He waves his pistol.]

Mendoza
We should get some help.

Diego [turning from the window to look at Don Alejandro]
He's right, Father.

Don Alejandro
All right!  I'll follow them.  And you go for help.

Diego
No, be reasonable.  You've already lost a good deal of blood.  Go to the cuartel with the sergeant and get help.  I'll stay here in case they return.

Don Alejandro [angrily]
Will you act like a de la Vega for once in your life?

Diego
But Father, you don't know. . .

Don Alejandro
Don't ‘but father' me.  Felipe is in danger of being gunned down and you can only muster the courage to say ‘I'll stay here'.

Diego
Father, you don't know the whole situation . . .

Don Alejandro
I know enough!  I know that my only son is. . .is a coward.

[He pushes past Diego and leaves the room.  Mendoza gives Diego a sympathetic glance before he and Sepulveda follow after Don Alejandro.  Diego goes after them and slams the door shut.  He walks back into the parlor, shaking his head.  Then he looks down at the blood on his hands.  He then hurries off to his right.]

[Exterior shot of Felipe riding his horse up to a fence.  They jump the fence then ride up to a stable where he dismounts.  He pulls his horse to the far end of the stable.]

[Exterior shot of the two bandits riding along a road.]

[Interior shot of Felipe peeking around a wall in the stable as their hoof beats grow louder.]

[Exterior shot of the bandits as they ride up to the fence then come to a halt.]

Bandit Leader
You look in the stables.  I'll look around outside.

Bandit
Yeah.  Okay.

[The bandit rides his horse into the stable while the bandit leader rides off to his left.  The first bandit dismounts and walks cautiously through the stable toward where Felipe is hiding.  Felipe signals to his horse and it runs forward, knocking down the bandit who hits his head on a metal pail as he falls backward.  Felipe looks down at the bandit and smiles.  He swings around to the other side of a post then stops.]

Bandit Leader [off camera at first]
Adios, muchacho. [He is aiming a musket at Felipe's chest.] But you know too much.

[Zorro comes up behind the bandit leader and put his saber on the back of the man's neck.]

Zorro
Pull the trigger and you'll be dead before you hit the ground.

[Felipe smiles excitedly.  The bandit leader looks over his shoulder then swings around and fires the rifle.  Zorro hits the rifle so that the bullet goes into the ground.  Zorro then pushes the bandit leader into a stall.  The other bandit comes up and punches Felipe hard in the throat.  Zorro and the bandit leader are dueling with their sword in the stall.  The other bandit draws out his sword and runs up behind Zorro.  Felipe is doubled over, leaning on a stall railing, still reeling from being punched.  Zorro is fighting with the bandit leader and doesn't see the other bandit coming up behind him.  Felipe tries to warn Zorro but no sound comes out of his mouth.  He tries again and this time makes a ‘Z' sound then. . .]

Felipe
Zorro!

[Zorro turns around just as the other bandit is about to run him through.  Zorro blocks the thrust and they duel until Zorro punches him and he falls to the straw-covered floor.  Zorro then walks over to Felipe.]

Zorro [incredulously]
Felipe.  You spoke.

[Felipe smiles. Zorro smiles back.  Felipe tries to speak again but no sound comes out.]

Zorro [still amazed]
You said my name.  Saved my life.  Say it again.

[Felipe tries to speak but nothing comes out.  He shakes his head disappointedly.]

Zorro
I know.  You have so much inside. [He puts his hand on Felipe's shoulder.] Give it time, huh?

[He laughs and starts shaking Felipe's shoulder.  Felipe smiles again.]

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK*****

[Exterior shot of the tavern porch.  People standing around it start running to their left.]

Voices (two young girls who wave to their left)
Felipe!  Felipe!  Hey!

[Don Alejandro walks out of the tavern with his right arm in a sling.  He is followed by Mendoza and de Soto.]

Don Alejandro
Felipe, you got them!  How did you do this?

[Felipe is driving the de la Vega carriage containing the two bandits.]

Mendoza [pointing to the men in the carriage]
Are those the two men?

Don Alejandro
Yes, they attacked and ambushed the hacienda.

[Felipe nods.]

de Soto [as he, Don Alejandro, and Mendoza all walk up to the carriage]
How did you do this, Felipe?

[Felipe points to his right, circles his arm, then point to his right again.]

de Soto [as Felipe continues to make gestures]
Slow down, slow down. [Felipe makes a ‘Z' in the air with his finger.] Please, I can't understand you.  What's he saying, de la Vega?

Don Alejandro [smiling teasingly]
He's going a little too fast for me. [He turns to Mendoza.] Sergeant, please.

Mendoza [as Felipe continues to make more gestures]
I think he's saying, um, he's glad he could help you do your job, Alcalde.

[De Soto looks angry but doesn't say anything.  Don Alejandro and Mendoza look at each other and start chuckling.  Felipe smiles.]

[Exterior shot of the tavern.]

[Interior shot of Mendoza, Don Alejandro, Felipe, and Diego standing in front of the bar, holding glasses of orange juice.]

Don Alejandro [raising his glass]
To a most resourceful young man.

[They all clink their glasses together, then take a drink, everyone but Diego.]

Diego
You were right, Felipe.  A handicap doesn't have to be an impediment.  You can do whatever you set out to do.

[Felipe smiles.]

Mendoza
You know, Felipe, the military recruiting officer is going to be here next month.  We could use a clever young man like you in the ranks.

[Felipe shakes his head.  He points to his eyes, then makes a sweeping circle with his arm, then makes a dismissive gesture.  Mendoza looks confused.]

Diego [chuckling]
I'm sorry, Sergeant. [He pats Felipe on the shoulder.] Felipe has his eye on bigger things.  He says he wants to help people fight injustice.  But he's going to become a lawyer.

Mendoza [incredulously]
A lawyer?  But he's deaf.  He can't talk.

[Felipe looks down at the floor as Don Alejandro looks at Mendoza disapprovingly.]

Mendoza
I mean. . . [He starts coughing.] he is handicapped.

Diego
I wouldn't tell him that, Sergeant.  Somehow, I don't think it's going to matter much.

[He puts his hand on Felipe's neck and Felipe looks up at him.  Mendoza and Don Alejandro clink their glasses to Felipe's.  Felipe smiles happily.]
